I just did a contract working round some animators and got a bit more of an appreciation for what this 3d modelling stuff is all about. Looks farking hard, truth be told.

So, what did you use? Maya?

You tryin' to cuddle up to the BOG GYZ?

I'm getting either Solid works or another Solid CAD modelling program - I haven't decided yet. Indy is looking for same...

As for your model Sassy - I'd say it looks like a watch assembly or helm of a yacht

Not to be cruel or anything cause those are some well done pictures, but why do you have the intercooler outside the body?

I use( d) acad 6 ,,,but of late I have been using good ole pencil and paper,, found it allowed me time to think , about the design AND gave me better appriciation for the layout of the drawing ( no repeated dimension!!! hahaha )

3d it really good IMHO for showing what it will look like in service ,,,

Acad '07 has greater 3D functionality but it depends on your subject matter. We're using Autodesk Revit to design buildings now. It has greater cross disciplinary co-ordination between Architect and Engineer. And now that Revit Services is coming into use it'll be even better.

If you go to Maya's homesite you will find a version that is free to download.

Maya Student.

It is the whole complete package. Fully functional but it watermarks all its output with STUDENT on it. Thereby negating its use commercially.

As I have said it is free to download. All the plugins work in it.

Pretty much the industry standard now for 3D graphic design.

It used to be 3d Studio leading the way but Maya in one fell swoop (ie allowing student usage) cut the legs out from under that prog.

I have been using and playing with these programs now for about 14 years. I trained as a mech eng designer in CAD/CAM and used 3d programs to show my prototypes in my thesis.

I applaud your efforts. Looks really nice. turn on anti aliasing, smooth up the edges and put a few more curves into the parts. Ray tracing would help throw a few shadows in the picture.

Constructive criticism. Carry on the great work. Welcome to the facinating world of 3d.

Thanks for that info. I've downloaded a copy.

I've used 3D Studio Max since it was 3D Studio and ran under DOS.

Interesting to see that Maya is now an Autodesk program, considering that 3DSMax used to be too before Discreet took it over.

What's the learning curve like? I would imagine its pretty much the same as any other program - if you know what you want, you'll find a way to do it...

Maya has a quite hevy learning curve but there are lots of resources on the web to help. Including video tutorials if you know how to hit the "torrent" sites.

I've playe with it for years now and am still learning. Enthusiastic amatuer.

Been playing around with ACAD 2007 etc. just to keep my hand in.

Always list my hobbies as

Motorbikes, shooting and 3D.

I did my bike at the time, a 93 ZXR750, took me about a month off n on.

Used LightWave 7.5. The good thing about LightWave is it has good rendering.

Some cool work there

I don't normally haunt R&R so I've only just found this thread.

Here's some stuff I did in Google Sketchup when I was designing the muffler for my SV. Normally I don't have time to learn stuff like CAD, but it was easier than cranking out the drawing board

Excelent work. Love the radii.

I havent touched 3d for 6 months and this post is once again getting me interested.

Start throwing in some textures and ray tracing.

I remeber my first foray into this field.

in the days of 8mb of ram and a 386. did this wonderful pic (my opinion) then spent a week waiting for it to be rendered.

Looked like shit but that only encouraged me to try harder.
