View Full Version : Which bike insurance?

TheDrake

Hi all.

Just a quick question now that my bike has cleared customs, MAF and entry certification. Who are the best insurance companies for bikes? I would prefer a company that actually knows something about motorcycling and has appropriate medical/legal cover. Trying to get any info out of the guys on the telephone is like extracting teeth!

Thanks in advance

Michael

I agree. If you get in touch with John Baker insurance brokers they can check with a number of companies but will almost always end up with STAR and may be able to negotiate a small discount.

See http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=36644 to get in touch with Tim from JB.

If you are over thirty, call Classic Cover.
If you aren't, your choices are limited to whichever insurers you or your family have an existing relationship with or specialists like Star, E-Bike and that Golightly guy in Christchurch.

I heard the E-bike one was dodgy as from what people are saying in forums here.

Do you do quotes oscar should I PM you looking at an off-road cover

Does your company do all people over 30 with classic. And which company do you work for.

I deal with mainly commercial and industrial insurance, so no - I don't generally provide premium quotations for motorcycles. However I have a lot of experience in the wholesale end of the market - dealer schemes for various bike importers and I've worked with insurers and underwriting agencies to develop new bike products.

Frankly, most of the so-called "Motorcycle Insurers" that get mentioned here aren't insurers at all - not as defined by regulation. They are underwriting agencies, set up usually by Brokers to sell a specialist product. Star, for example is an underwriting agency for Lumleys, whereas Classic Cover uses Vero. What does that mean to you? Not much - both of the underlying insurers mentioned are pretty good, Lumleys is rated A- and Vero A+.

However what I was alluding to earlier was the relationship between these companies and brokers - for example the fact that Star is owned by one Mr. J F Baker - who also owns John Baker Insurance Brokers. This should probably give you food for thought when Star is recommended by an employee of his.

E-Bike?
Not even resident in NZ.
Operated from Sydney as I recall.
Cover is underwritten by Southern Rock, a company registered in Gibraltar. Is this a reason not to insure with them? Maybe, maybe not, but it is another fact you should consider.

As far as my bikes are concerned, my babies are insured with Classic Cover, who I would recommend to anyone over thirty.

Jeez Oscar you know now to not answer a question I asked who your company recommends and you give me a long winded spin answer that actually doesn't answer my question. So If somewalks in your door that owns a bike you send them down the road even if they want to do their business house car and their underwear with you. Which insures (you said you worked on them) do bike manufactures work with I know Honda does the riders club with vero any out their working with other companies

Also Cheers Jetboy thank for taking the bull by the horns and PM'ing me it was fast easy and so so cheap about half of what protector quoted.:drinknsin :drinknsin

My 2 cents.

Didnt like dealing with Protecta after my 1st bin, I felt like they were calling me a liar and they farted around for months before paying out.

Went with NAC after that and have found them good to deal with, especially when I got taken out by the car. No hassles at all with excess being waived etc as I wasnt at fault, and the only real delays with getting the bike back on the road was with waiting for parts from japan which is outside their control. Happy to recommend them.

NZI should also probably get an honourable mention, when I first got my 250 and was on my learners they quoted me quite a high price compared to the bike insurers. However when I was using my 250 again for a few months while the marauder was in the shop they gave me full cover for $24 a month, which I could cancel at any time (no paying 1 year in advance etc)

I use state insurance but as I have all the rest of my insurance with them I get a good deal and have never had any hassels, they have paid out on 2 bike accidents without any problems at all, in both cases my lady was not at fault, all paid out in full, no loss of excess or no claims

Saying that I am not as young as I once was:scooter:

I originally insured with State, who I have everything else insured with, for the last 20 years (!) and they had me paying 1000 excess which was just bollocks. So I checked classic cover and my excess is halved on pretty much the same premiums. States current policy for bikes is that anything over a certain cc rating gets 1k excess regardless of age or experience...so they can get well and truly stuffed.

As Oscar puts it: short version, if you are over 30 call Classic Cover.

I rang classic cover as well as the others during my ring round and, although they were the cheapest, my current broker has got me a better deal through NZI....pending JetBoy's excellent work he is doing....my advice..once you have got all your quotes, double check them with a broker who might be able to do better again.......just my opinion anyway

Well, spent a good few hours ringing around, firing emails left right and centre, and finally thought I'd track this Jetboy fella down.

Bloody good move!

He kicked the AA quote I got RIGHT in it's bum by more than $50, and ran over the top of ClassicCover by almost 10%

No-one else got even close.

Bit pissed about AA as I have been a member with them for over 10 years, and have 2 cars, my house and the contents with them, and they more or less shafted me, even after I told them they were in danger of losing out.

So, Jetboy IS the shizz, SWMBO approved the expense, and to his fine place of employment it goes. Now to sit down and re-evaluate all the other insurances.

Thanks Jetboy, pleasure dealing with you - thanks for making it painless on a dumbass like me!

Well I've been a member even longer than you (nya nya) and I have my car insured with them but they won't even insure me because I have a learner's license. Not even 3rd party!

I told them I was on a learners, that was fine.

When I rang back to say that a broker had spanked them, the reply was immediate "We can't beat that."

Doing a little too well perhaps? Or just don't give a crap...

Either way, off to JB to sign on the dotted line this arvo. Bit gutted though, got to take the cage, hard to carry an office chair back on the bike :(

Hi, i'm 18 looking at getting a 225cc Yamaha Scorpio, looking at brand new seeing as i can't see any second hand's around the place. I'll be getting my learners on the weekend hopefully and buying a bike when summer rolls back around, but I really want to know how much third party fire and theft insurance would be for me to insure it myself...or should i put the bike in my parents name and have them pay for me to be the named driver? it works out cheaper for the car :innocent:

Theoretically it shouldn't make any difference.
If you're the main rider, then the bike will be rated as if you own it.

Good to get insight from those in the industry! I went with Tim, (Jetboy), as his quote matched Kiwibike but he's a KB'r and the terms were good. We've been with State forever and have all our insurances with them and have nothing bad to say about their prices or the service we've had from them. However their quote for the bike was about $200 over Tim's and no roadside assist on bikes despite having it free with our car insurance.

Give NAC a try. From the 15+ companies i tried they were the cheapest.

The only problem is they dont combine all your other insurances... but that aside they are cheap cheap cheap. Roadside assistance is included too.
