View Full Version : From a cage perspective....

Ok I ride a motorbike, but I also drive a cage. Many many times on here I read things like:
" Na mate I was only going Nana speeds, never got over 120"
and:
"Blind bastard pulled out right in front of me"
My question is - how often are the two related? For example, out of my driveway there is a crest of a hill, if cars etc are going at around the speed limit, I have plenty of time to safely exit the drive. If I was to wait just in case there happened to be a bike coming up the hill at speed, I'd never get out. If I pulled out and hit a bike that was going 70 - 80, would they come on here and say 'blind bitch pulled out in front of me'???

If you pull out of your driveway and a bike hits you, i find it hard to believe you could be called blind.......however, the biker mentality you display in the thinking about it is fantastic!........riding bikes makes you a bit sharper out there I think :done:

It has actually happened... more times than you really like to think about, with differing results from written off bikes, and riders being slightly injured or dying...
Also depends... I have noticed that cars generally won't sit at 100 constantly, through country side, as they can't do that round corners etc. So while I might sit on 100 most of the time, it is actually faster than cars anyway, as I am doing that down straight or corner.

would they come on here and say 'blind bitch pulled out in front of me'???
Yes - however that does not mean you are a blind bitch who pulled out in front of them. It's just that they need someone to blame for their mistake...and if you are a chick in a car, that will do....if you drive a 4x4 that is even better.
You are not Asian are you? Now that would be the ultimate.

Fair point , Lucy. Cant always be the other persons fault.

Ive got a bit of a bugger of a driveway. I live at the end of a straight stretch of road just out of town. I have to stop before I pull into my drive because there is a nasty dip that leaves a nasty blind spot. 3 times there has been a near misses from people pulling in. You think you have a clear veiw but then a car seems to appear out of the dip and usually at great speed. I warn people to make sure they come to a complete stop before pulling in. The point I should be making is..you have to check and be sure. Make sure it wont be your fault.

It is ALWAYS the responsibilty of the person pulling out of the driveway to ensure the road is clear.
To do that you have to look, carefully, more than once.
I'm guessing you don't ride.

If you start to pull out of the driveway when the way is clear and a bike appears; going too fast to stop in half the distance to driveway then it is the bike rider's fault. Can't be more simple?

Lou, I find your attitude bewildering. Lucy said that if traffic is moving at the speed limit, she has time to pull out. She implied that if traffic is travelling at 70 - 80 she can't pull out safely, because she can't see them as she pulls out, but they will be on top her before she has time get underway.
How is she supposed to know that there is traffic on the other side of a hill crest that is travelling over the speed limit? Is she supposed to have ESP, or ground penetrating radar :spudwhat:

Yes they would, and then everyone chimes in with similar stories, its a bit like the old saying ' the customer is never wrong'....and we all know thats not always the case, sometimes they are. I had an incident yester day, turning left at the light, behind a 'blind bitch' in a RAV, green arrow, and she stoped!!
Almost dented my lovely riding machine, came very close, in this case the 'Blind stupid i dont give a fuck about anyone else Bitch' was IMHO was one of those drivers....:done:

Almost all accidents are caused by accident pixies.
Very rarely are the drivers at fault, regardless what official accident reports may say.

Ok as I understand it....... technically you are not meant to reverse out of a driveway.... (See roadcode well its in there somewhere just dont ask me where)
That you are meant to always drive out of the driveway...... so that way you can see what is coming and that the clearway is in fact clear when entering the road.
But in most cases just about everyone drives down into their driveway and reverses out of the driveway. Only cos they dont have a turning bay in the driveway.
So I guess we are meant to do some sort of turn around in the street and reverse down into our driveways.... oh and hit the flaming pushbike or toy that is left out on the driveway.....

I'm glad it was only an almost dent. Sounds like you being on a bike didnt affect the situation though, no matter how frustrating it was! One day I was behind a couple of cops in a cop car who were stopped at a green arrow. I wasted a few seconds plucking up the courage to blast my horn, and when I did they looked at me first 'who the hell toots a cop' before looking to see why I tooted them, then THEY made it through (orange/red) but I had to wait for the next one. Grrrr. I wished I'd just honked first and not been so chicken.

I had one of these the other day in my car...only it was an asian guy...ran right up his arse...put a nice dent in the center of my bumper. Now my cage looks really rough and everyone gets out of my way :shit:
edit: The silly thing was, it was a give way and I was busy looking right again for speeding bikes when the dude stopped at a clear road.
Glad you're both still in one piece.

Yeah - the point she was making was that because of the distance between her drive and the blind summit that anyone exceeding the speedlimit would hit her car before she had a chance to do anything about it.
Blind summit + excessive speed = disaster.
In this case not the fault of the car - but it's hypothesis only.
I was a cyclist for years and thought of motorcyclists as blind bastards a lot of the time - especially when the fuckers went down twisty hills slower than me, blocking the lane and using their brakes. FFS who uses brakes downhill? It's the only time you get to top 80kph!
See - everyone needs someone to blame.:dodge:

It is interesting to compare this thread with the recent poll which suggested a higher speed limit (or perhaps no speed limit) for bikes. Go figure........:gob:
An interesting observation, Lucy - nice one.

As I was told last year by police here in the hutt after a minor fender bender, whenever you are in reverse on the road you are in the wrong, whether it was the other persons fault or not by law the person reversing is in the wrong. Sad but true, made me swear at the time never to reverse on the road again. Didnt last long, but now I at least look EVERYWHERE when I do.:done:

I agree. The group rides I go on, when you see a group up front passing cars before say a 35k corner, they know that they can safely get past and brake in time to take the corner comfortably. The cage driver who is insulated from the conditions with radio, heater, sound insulation etc from the outside and not so quite concerned about making a mistake. I think it scares them when the bike is right in their face, you see all the cars brake lights come on which from my point of view seems a little unecessary, we ride two abreast and in close proximity with each other safely and unsafely at times but the car driver is not travelling with a group and has probably the other half in their ear telling them about the following distance. I think riders are more defensive, but at their own expense they protect them selves but cause the others to make mistakes. This is as its been told to me cos I'm always up front so I've never seen what I've just been told if you get my dirft.

ooooohhhhh low blow ....... oppps ......... hang on .......... thinking about it now......... hhhhhmmmmmm ......... oh yeh ...... my last crash was an female/ asian/ in a 4x4 hahaahahhaah she went through a give way sign and T-boned my bike, she was nice about it tho after she got over the misguided belief I was in the wrong she even offered me a job driving a brand new Mack (chokes/throws up) I declined .... prefer my brand new R500 Scania.
She done just over $2000 damage to my bike and dam insurance wouldnt write it off :( had visions of inhereting a new 1400 Intruder LOL
