Isnt the Autobahn beyond the Bloodstock turnoff? Long way to go to turn around I would think. Maybe there is a better alternative.... correct me if I'm wrong, I usually am.
You are right this time Speedie....Karaka off ramp is BEFORE the Autobahn......

Really, I'd never noticed! :p
The usual solution is to ride south to the Drury interchange and ride back up to Karaka.

If it's like the Christmas toy run I did up there in 05 I don't think you'll even see that speed.
Probably had a third as many bikes at the toy run than will be at this thing.

Don't worry the bikes are sheparded by the cops, and speed is only round 50ish, if that.
You'll be fine, and have a jolly good time. And its a nice social thing at the end, much better than the Toy run where everybody just pisses off after the speech.

Don't know about kiwi cyclists but just before I emigrated to NZ I took part in the 2004 London to Brighton ride for the British Heart Foundation - total of 27,000 cyclists raising millions of pounds to fight heart disease.
But what the fuck would I know being an old married homo with 2 kids?
Sort your shit out before you hurl personal abuse at me Speedie. Any generic abuse about cyclists is personal to me as I assume any generic abuse about motorcyclists would be taken as personal by you. Or are you not that serious about bikes?

You had to ask? Of course they are - they will be the same people that bought houses next to a Speedway and then closed it down.
They are the same people that complained about a beautiful coastal stadium ruining the landscape coz they'd rather look at cranes, used cars and dirty containers.
They are the same people that said "Give the V8 supercars to Hamilton despite the fact that we need the revenue"
It'll be fun to make them whinge anyway :devil2:

Piece of cake really...
I did the toy run month or so back, spoke to a 2 wheeler copper, who very happily told me that so long as I was part of a charitable pack, that although I was to leave my L plate on, I was to forget the speed limit for the duration of the ride. He also went on to tell me that this was to remain the same for the return trip, so long as I was able to prove I had participated... which is where getting a pin or shirt is a good idea. (Although this applied only to a direct flight off the motorway system)
MOST coppers are understanding that though rules shouldn't bend, sometimes they need to be given a temporary sideways shove.
Failing that, hunt a fat ass cruiser out, flutter your eyelashes, wriggle ya butt in the seat, and you'll have a tail ender obstructing your noobness there and back... :niceone:

I wore an L plate for the 6 months duration - used the Southern Motorway daily and was never stopped for doing 100kph while wearing it.
It just seems to be used as an additional piece of legislation they can throw at Learner motorcyclists while riding like a knob but rarely (if ever) used as an excuse to pull someone up when they're riding sensibly.
And if you thought that was me fighting then you haven't met a Glaswegian before!
Should be a good day - I'll go after all since it is a good cause - I'll just avoid Speedie so I don't get angry.

Re: TV Coverage
I dunno about this year, but I know a few producers who might (possibly) be interested in making a spec documentary on the ride (I'm a TV editor).
I'll talk to some people in the next couple of ideas... At the moment, in my head, I am formulating a devious plan about making a doco on this, but times a little short and I am prety flat out at the moment.
However, I would like to know - how many people here video or photograph stuff during the ride (either family/friends from the 'sidelines' or onboard)? If you do, would you be keen to offer up some footage/photos (for a credit, and potentially a little cash if the doco came into any money)?

You can't go wrong. Down the northwestern, hang left onto the southern, keep going, and a bit more, and a more miles extra, until y pass the Takanini straight, then a bit further to where where the speedo test strip used to be, then keep on steady a bit more until you see the sign saying Karaka. If you get to the bit where the motorway used to end (where the Drury garage used to be - well you won't actually get THERE cos the built the road up and moved it round, but you know what I mean), you've gone too far, turn round and go back.

err not trying to be funny but, 'left onto the southern'? thats Henderson. Go the other way and I hit the CBD. Whats the speedo strip? Drury garage? *lost me*
Ixion
6th February 2007, 17:29
Nono , left AFTER the "down the northwestern". Not HARD left or you'll end up on the North Shore (I think, they messed about with things there, anyway hard left goes somewhere you don't want to be) , and not straight on or you'll end up down at the port.
This assumes that you are in the right hand lane of course. If not, for left read right.
You don't actually GO left as such, just hang a left across, and a wiggle and a twirl up the hill. Then just follow your nose southward. A blind man could find it, just follow the instructions and you can't possibly go wrong.

to go to this thing?
Disco_Dan - Get on the nor-western motorway to head to the city/uni.....
Just past the NEWTON off-ramp is the HAMILTON lane..
Get into the lane that is for HAMILTON........
That lane gets you onto the southern motorway......
Keep going down the southern motorway until you see the sign that says KARAKA.
Take the KARAKA off-ramp....... at this point you have to go back over the motorway bridge....... to get to the KARAKA Bloodstock/horse carpark........
Thats where you will find heaps of bikes.
Park up your bike...... leave helmet with the bike.... (it will be safe)
and have a wander around to look at other bikes and to chat with others.
Take note where your bike is parked so when the time comes you can find your bike again.

All good - but aim for the Papakura offramp - it's the one after the sign indicating the Karaka Bloodstock Centre
**edit** Actually, ride past that offramp, look for a BP on the left hand side of the motorway, and aim for the gaggle of KB folk meeting there.

Its signposted southbound just past Papakura offramp as a "Service Centre" just prior to its own little off-ramp...

Left side. Right foot first. Only Yank cops dismount to the right. To tell which is left , start your bike, sit on it. Grasp the handlebars. Twist first one hand , then the other. The hand which makes the engine go faster when you twist it is the right hand. The other hand is your left hand. Unless you are riding an Indian. Or have only one hand. You can't go wrong.

Easy peasy. Y'can't go wrong.
You already know how to get onto the Southern.
Just beetle down there , take the Otahuhu turnoff. hang a right , and then wiggle left. A couple of lefts and a right or two , you'll be at the top of the Gt South Rd, by the monument (dude on a horse). Just outside where Mr Lange's father used to doctor, can't miss it. You used to go right there, but they've buggered it about , so now you have to go down the hill a bit, toward where the first Foodtown store used to be, then a right. Carry on , past where Lincoln Traders used to be , leftish past Otahuhu College, and follow your nose. A few lefts and rights , just keep on, past the speed camera, and keep right on going past where the picture theatre used to be (it's something else now).
The odd left and right , just wiggle about , and follow your nose.
Look for the big tree by the old church , you can't miss it.
Hang a left a bit after that and follow your nose straight ahead.
Domestic terminal straight on (well, not quite straight on, cos then you'd end up on the runway!). Car park on the left, with a wiggle.
Back to the Southern , there's lots of options, but probably best just to go back the way you came, just watch out cos if you're not really careful you end up back in West Auckland.
You can't go wrong, just follow the directions.

Well, it is more a case of *old* and exciting roads. Some of the best roads are those which were once main roads but have now been bypassed. Anything with an "old" in the name (Old North Rd, Old Coast Road etc) is always worth riding.
State highways with a letter (eg 1a) are yusually worth a look also.
The map I use is one I have had for several years, I inherited from my father. It has quite a few roads marked on it that are not much used now. Always worth venturing down. Also any road that shows a town or village on my map that is not marked on more modern maps.

Then you place the RIGHT foot onto the ground, beside your LEFT foot.
But first turn off your bike....

So why "last ride" then. Because the goverment wants to charge 10 grand to direct traffic? why not just do the charity ride anyway, dont even tell the cops and robbers (goverment) just turn up and ride. make lots of funds and donate it. Just my ten cents worth.

For any others meeting us there you go north along the northern m/way, off at Silverdale and turn right at the roundabout, straight through the next round (onramp to go south on Northern motorway), continue straight through the lights at East Coast Road (Plantbarn on the right), through the dip and up the hill. At the top of the hill you'll see the BP on the right hand side. You can't turn into the BP from that lane though. About 100m after the BP on the right hand side is a road where you will need to do a u-turn in order to get to the BP. Any questions? Disco, If you come and pick up Sunhuntin from my place in the morning you will be riding with me anyway so you don't need directions. (Awesome avatar by the way.....)

I had an AWESOME time with an estimated 1500 bikes on the ride
Best part was the tunnel after the Wellesley Street offramp where everyone revved the crap out of their engines.... sound was phenomenal.
Thanks to all, met far too many people for my tiny brain to remember your names.
English bloke on the red SV1000 - I know I said it before, but I really like your bike :)
Ulysses are still in negotiation with Transit and are hopeful that the ride will be allowed to go ahead next year... just hope none of the cagers forced to wait on the onramps for us decide to complain :)

Yep - an awesome ride indeed!
Was talking to some of the Ulysses guys - they said there were 2000 badges available, and they ran out - so this may be a good indicator (not including pillions) as to how many went on this
Awesome to see the spectators on all the overbridges - and the reason for us doing the ride (the Westpac chopper doing a flypast at the start)
Lets hope that the sandle-wearing red-tapers dont wreck this for all next year... :ride:

Good day with 100's of bikes :D The ride along the motorway was faster than previous years, rarely getting below 100kph.
Nice to see so many KB shirts, patches and stickers being displayed :niceone:
Also found a good way to get a cold drink without the queueing. Put two cans of V in the freezer the night before so they were frozen solid the next morning when I put them in the tail of the bike. They were nicely thawed, but still chilly cold at the end of the ride. :apint: No waiting in line for a cold one.
Will be doing the ride again next year, no metter what transit say.
