Nah, was a friends bike that i got to ride back to his place (he was scared :nya:) I thought it was an awesome bike, easy to handle, not that bad of a position. I did notice that my wrists got a little sore after riding at 50k's. It did feel like it had more power than my cruiser, but that could have been due to the sports bike position. Even though i only rode it for a short amount of time, i think its an awesome bike, and if i had money, it would be in the top 3 on my list.

So how was the night guys? Where did ya end up going?
It was a cool ride - took a while to get into it, I got a bit wide on one corner with the rear locking up a bit, but all good.
We went to Okarori pub via back of Cambridge, then home via the damb and Te Awamutu.
Thanks for the encouragement to come out guys, well worth it.

so where were you - I only went cause you were going, I was going to ride at a more acceptable pace with you - but instead I had go hard and keep up with them.

Sorry I had to slither off early lads, waiting for "someone" to go home and pick up his wallet put me behind on the schedule assigned by her who must be obeyed
Had to laugh when Warr ripped past those 1st two intersections on the Maungatautari rd down to that low-level crossing. I was thinking, oh well, its a nice tight section from here to Arapuni dam. :Punk:

Hey Smoky, sorry I didn't make it; some things came up. I wasn't really sure if I would come at all, so sorry if I seemed more certain than I was.
On an unrelated note, I managed to bin my bike on the way to work today. Taking off from the lights that go from Normandy Ave onto Cobham Drive, my rear wheel just slid right out. I've thought about it a good long while and still don't really know what happened. I didn't take off any harder than usual, and the road looked fine. Obviously taking off into a lean with some throttle puts the tires close to the traction limit, but I've never even had a slither before. Yet, today the rear just dropped right out from under me. There was no loose feeling from the tire beforehand, like you normally get when you're pushing a bit too hard. The only thing I can think is that I hit a spot of something slippery and invisible, or that I've discovered the outside of the lower limit of my tires' operating temperature. Or both. It was the coldest morning I've ridden since getting my Storms, so I'm sorta leaning toward the latter option, but again, I'd have expected some feedback from the tire before I found myself on the ground watching my bike sliding through an intersection.
Thank the good Lord for frame sliders; it would be a bit of a wreck otherwise, but as it is the damage is pretty minor. Also had the good fortune to have a friendly cager help me up and get the bike over to the side of the road.

Bad luck man. Wouldn't be the 1st time thats happened there. I've been commuting through that intersection for three years now, every day, so has a workmate of mine. I've lost count of the number of times I've had traction issues there.
I tend to take it REAL SLOW round that corner, especially if running thru on a green (or orange)
One of my workmates commutes on that route also and has had a couple of close calls. You really gotta watch it when it gets a skin of frost/ice over it too. I guess it gets loads of trucks and whatnot rolling through it.

I've already ordered a new frame slider and have asked for a quote on the currently duct-taped rear fairing bit. I bet it's like two hundred bucks for that piece of shiny black plastic. Rotters. I might just leave the duct tape on; it reminds me fondly of my old munted ZR250, which was really held together by the stuff. Takes more than a lowside to make an FZ6 not pretty :D

I've had some really strange traction experiences on that curve before, eh. One time I was coming in pretty fast down the last straight, toward the curve, and the lights hit orange a bit before I expected...so I nailed the brakes figuring I could stop in time without too much trouble. Only...not so much. I kinda slide through the curve with my rear wheel fishtailing as the lights hit red. I think you're right about the trucks. There are always heaps going through there and they probably deposit their evil truck-stuff all over the place as they go through.

Keke, I suspected things would start getting rather nasty. Frankly, I'm wuss enough to dislike riding hard in the dark in the dry, when I can't see through the corner and can't look at the surface I'm about to cover. But when I can't see through the corner and I know the surface is probably gonna be slippery as a seal's back, it really sets my teeth on edge. So yeah, I went back Gordonton way to Jamie's place and watched Star Trek :D I figure being honest about this will somehow mitigate the negative masculinity I have accrued by doing it.

Bnonn: out of curiosity .. how did those under gloves work for you?
Bnonn
17th May 2007, 10:44
Yeah, they were pretty good eh. They are much lighter than the heavy things whathisface was wearing (did he keep stalling his Triumph because of those things? I'd rather have cold hands!) They add a bit of weight to your hands so you feel slightly clumsy at first, but nothing like wearing heavy winter gloves, and I got used to it very quickly. I didn't have any problems with cold until the very end of my trip home, when my hands were starting to feel just a tiny bit chilly. But it was only about 12 degrees out last night, I think, so when darkest winter is upon us, they will definitely not be as warm as a set of thick thermal gloves. However, since I only use the bike for commuting in winter, I don't see it being a problem. My hands used to go numb on the way to work with just my summer leather gloves; with the merino under-gloves I imagine it will be much more comfy, while not sacrificing hand mobility. For $30 a pop you can't go wrong. Plus, I work on a helpdesk, and have to type fast, so having tight-fitting woolen gloves is a bonus if my hands are cold. You should get some; you wouldn't want the cold to slow you down on the terminal, eh (;
Oh, also gotta add that the Oxford tank bag I got yesterday was stellar. I was afraid it would come loose at high speeds, since I have no fairing and it's taking the full force of the wind, but it was solid as. Fits real nicely, sticks tight at 140+ kph, holds a goodly amount (18 L), and doesn't get in the way. $109 from Road and Sport. Probably got ripped off come to think of it, but I like it all the same.

hmmm - I don't think any one thinks like that, when I go out; I ride at the pace I feel comfortable with not always at the same pace as others, unless I feel like it and then I try to hold on to Terminal and warr for as long as I can, some days I do better than others.
Once we turned off I got left miles behind - but I had a great ride.
Well think we all deserve medals for the fine effort last night. :first: :first: :first: :first:
Cant say I enjoy night stuff quite like day riding. Hardly any comparison at all.
At night I wobble all over the place, get into corners too hot and just basically my riding turns to :shit:
I suspect it would improve if I was by myself without trying to follow anothers lights or have lights up my date.
But the nights 'trials' were compounded by the wet and treaturiously slippery stuff we were riding on.
All good riding practise for the Grand Challenge I"d say... Have you got your entry in Pete ??????

MAte, I'm upgraded my front suspension, replacing the engine mounts with solid mounts, replacing my starter clutch, having the scoops polished and probably chromed if I can find a place to do it cheap enough, and repainting all the faded spots of paint on my engine.

Makes the motor a stressed part of the frame or something like that.
Makes it more rigid and helps keep the frame from flexing too much. 1980s technoligy man, I've also got to get the swingrm braced cause that's basically made out of exhaust tubing.
I figure that with the frame braces I lready have should eliminate that wobble when cornering at decent speeds.

Not a chance. MY bike's in the garage at the moment with no front end and the left side of the motor lying next to the bike on the ground lol.

Nothing is really broken or stressed just the Starter clutch is not working properly. Doing the same thing my Virago was doing when I first came to NZ, it's spinning freely in both directions instead of just the one and locking the other.

It's not the clutch it's the starter clutch. It connects the starter to the crank nd basically it spins just as fast as the starter when the button is pushed but then spins freely back the other way once the bike is started to keep from damaging the idler gears and the starter.
It's right behind my flywheel wich is why I've been having so much trouble getting to it. The bolt holding the fly wheel on is tighter than a fish's twat.

Rob, a better bike won't make you a better rider. Chances are that if you get an R1 and Matt gets an SV650, he'll still nail you in the corners unless you get some practice in. On the upside, I've never yet found natural talent to be an adequate substitute for study, practice, and experience. Although I'm speaking from my martial arts experience, I think it's universally true that even the most mediocre abilities can be refined to a high degree of skill by dedicated application—and the more mediocre you are, the more you tend to work hard at compensating for your lack of natural talent, and the better you become. People with natural talent tend to become complacent and assume they don't need to study or practice, and then they get whooped by people who, six months ago, had no chance against them.
Of course, I'm not saying you're mediocre; I don't really know how good you are. I personally sit closer to the mediocre end of the spectrum than the brilliant end—so I have to keep practicing, and particularly work at getting over my psychological limits.

I wasn't criticising either of them, Deeknow. And I particularly wasn't claiming (implicitly or otherwise) to be a better rider. Far from it. But my riding theory is reasonably good, even if my practice isn't, and I have had a lot of good advice from much better riders than I, which I feel can be validly given to others even if I am somewhat hypocritical by merit of not being able to apply it perfectly myself. So I don't mean to sound patronizing or anything; I think that everyone who has ridden with me knows that I am not a particularly good rider, and that I recognize this and wish to improve. So any advice I give should be taken with this in mind, but also with the knowledge that I don't speak only from my own experience, but also from the authority of the better riders whose advice I have read or received.
Anyhoo, I was just taking what Rob said and running with it—if Rob himself thinks that Matt is a better rider than he is, then if this is true, a better bike isn't what Rob needs. A better bike will obviously make him faster if he's already riding at the limits of his current bike, but I dunno that he is doing that. But let me rephrase for the sake of courtesy:
If Matt were to ride my Fazer, and I got an R1, he would probably still beat me through the twisties. I mean, yeah, I could crank the throttle on the straights and overtake him, but anyone can twist their wrist and go fast in a straight line. What I need isn't a better bike; what my bike needs is a better rider. It seems like very often people say that they need a better bike to go faster, when in fact they aren't even going nearly as fast as their current bike would allow if it were ridden to the limits of its performance. I know I am guilty of this to some extent. I could have upgraded to a VFR250 when my ZR died, and remained legal, and probably have done myself a favor by doing so; but I wanted a bigger bike because I thought it would help me improve my riding. (In my defense, I did at least recognize that a 750 or 900 or liter bike would be beyond my skill level and simply be foolish.) The truth is that a bigger bike tends to be an impediment to going faster—it is entirely possible to own a ZR250 and to keep up with many riders on 600 sportbikes, but it requires you to have more skill than them. Even now, I am guilty of upgrade syndrome. "The suspension feels squashy in the corners—I need heavier oil and better springs." No, I need a smoother throttle and braking, better body position, and clean and accurate lines. Once I've got that sorted, then it will be time for better oil. The only upgrade I feel halfway justified doing at the moment is braided lines, because with a pillion on board I am not happy with my bike's stopping power. But even then, I could get much better stopping distance by practicing my emergency braking, rather than shelling over $150 and using technology to compensate for my lack of skill.
Again, the only person I'm aiming to criticize here is myself, but I think that other people would benefit by considering what I'm saying. It isn't just based on my own experience—in fact, I am mostly restating what far more experienced and skilled riders than I have told me, and which I have come to realize from my own experience is true.

Maybe you should of thought about that before buying that FZ6, it's getting wasted...
I'm not talking about bike performance... I'm talking of rider skill, that if Matt can handle that cruiser of his through corners like he does, he'd do pretty damn well on a bike that's actually made to corner quickly ...although at the rate I'm going, I'm gonna need a better bike (more power, better suspension, more onboard room), as the FZR is getting old, as in: If I had more power, I'd actually use it, and of course, with more power, better suspension would be needed for higher and sharper corner speeds, and being 6'4", a 400cc Race Replica isn't exactly comfy on rides down to Taupo, unless a lot of legwork is involved (hanging off the bike so constantly, that you don't sit in one position for more than 5 minutes)

Kev has had his learner's for something like 13years, but never rode (hence why he's still on his learners, or maybe restricted now), he then went and bought a Hyosung GT250R, decided he needed a bigger bike to become a better rider, so he bought a VFR800, and now, since he isn't a better rider yet, wants a Triumph Sprint ST, which will definitely make him a better rider, and then he can go touring with big pannier bags on the bike

My problem at the time I upgraded was that I hadn't really ridden with other people before, so I'd never had any mentoring, and I'd never had to keep up with people faster than me—so I never really knew how much skill I lacked. Therefore, I thought I'd pretty much learned what I could on a 250, and so I got a bigger bike. But then I found out that actually I suck, and I'm working to fix it; whereas Big Kev seems to have just ignored all the advice he ever got...
hahaha wtf you only did 13,000km in 3 years! i got my VTR on the 5th of march and im already over 11,000km on the sucker

But of course, Alternate Universe Sidewinder wouldn't have said that, because he would have matured like a normal person and therefore wouldn't suffer from (possibly drug-related) SPS which caused him to post nothing but negative drivel on messageboards, vainly trying to put people down to prove to himself how bloody marvelous he is.
