Watch out for the friggin rain more like it, I've almost dried out after a soaking on Kahikatea Drive on the way home from work. A regular Wednesday evening ride is a spiffing idea, see you next week ( it its dry that is :sunny: )

Just a comment re the meeting place... It has the dissadvantage of being in the middle of town and a V slow set of lights to get out west.
Could you consider something out Dinsdale way and there is good riding West, South & North from Whatawhata road.
Oh and I live out there !!

Else I hope I can make it this week and the weather is kind too.

ok, suprisingly, I've only just found this thread now... Keen to join in on this ride if it's happening... will wonder down to the Caltex just before 6:30. Hope to see some people there.

Ps. Don't ask me to provide the route...

Forcast: Wednesday
Max: 25°C Min: 17°C
(Day) (Overnight)
Mostly cloudy, some drizzle. Westerly breeze.

Hopefully this 'drizzle' doesn't affect whatever roads we're riding on. I'll TXT Flux and see if he wants to meet up at the Caltex too.

Catch you peeps later

I live in Raglan and am a bit of a soft cock and so aren't too keen on riding back over the divi late at night.
Is there any interest is running these rides at 5:15 pm ?
Might not suit those who have to travel from afar or those who want to eat a proper meal first. But hey it works for me, leave work at 5:00 pm, arrive at Caltex at 5:10 pm. Ride for 2 hours, then head home. Still home by 8 ish.

ZeroIndex and I braved the elements tonight and headed over Whatawhata bridge, down thru Te Pahu, Pirongia, south to Te Kawa road then east as far as the main Otoronga drag.

Were gonna carry on at that point to Wharepapa but the skies were grim and the visors were swinging from drizzle-coated on the outside to misted-up on the inside, so we headed back to Dinsdale via some Paterangi and Ngahinepouri back-roads.

Despite the grim conditions it was actually a nice relaxed 125km rural amble. Cheers Zero, see the rest of yaz next week.

Now I'm back in Hamilton (Fcuk Katikati -sorry mum and dad) I'll be there next week. Did go for a ride tonight though, throught the back of.. oh I don't know... where they play banjos and have six fingers... off out towards Raglan then out towards Huntly (back roads) back up Sate Highway 1 and back along River Road towards home. Some dude in a Ford overtook me at 130+ km/h (let him for fun) then he watched as I overtook him at 80km/h as he looked at the back of a truck. A ride of about 1hr, good fun (minus the rain). Then home for some cold beers.... shit life is good. Hope to catch up next week.

Well? How about 6pm? theres no point in changing the time if it puts everyone else out though.

I was thinking about an irregular bi-and-a-half-monthly sunday ride from 10ish or something but that idea was rudely interrupted, might work for those who prefere to see more road.

I start my new job tomorrow, but should be finished by 5pm, which means I'll make it at 6pm... Caltex Dinsdale is actually a really good meeting place as quite a few KB members live really close by..... (like Pathos, Deeknow, and me) wonder if Pathos will come along this time....

Where we go is decided on the day, but if it was anything like last wednesday, it'll be good :)

Hang on hang on, are you saying that if you were a blue-eyed blond German, that everytime you came across a Jew, you'd apologize for Hitler, World War 2, and the concentration camps? If I want to give my money away, I'll do it freely, as opposed to being pressured into it. Please don't cross-thread items like this into the Wednesday Night Rides, especially considering the 'event' happened in South Island, and the bikers rode Hondas...

Much appreciated,

Hang on hang on, are you saying that if you were a blue-eyed blond German, that everytime you came across a Jew, you'd apologize for Hitler, World War 2, and the concentration camps? If I want to give my money away, I'll do it freely, as opposed to being pressured into it. Please don't cross-thread items like this into the Wednesday Night Rides, especially considering the 'event' happened in South Island, and the bikers rode Hondas...

Much appreciated,
Rob

i'm not pressuring anyone, i'm requesting big hearted people to help.

if we fall short I'll pay the balance

this affects us all as motorcyclists in NZ and it's likely that regardless that it happened in Franz Joseph, the riders are likely from various parts of the country

the link to this thread was merely to make you aware, after that it's all your choice and the only shame is on those who walked out on the bill

Ahhh.. so that explains your disapearing into the distance act :Punk: ... as I pulled up to the valley turn-off I looked around and no sight of you, figuired you must have missed the turn-off so me and the other-Matt carried on towards Morrinsville, no sign of you there neither.. so we carried on back to the Tron via Kuranui rd. Actually bumped into the others in Dinsdale on the way home so it seems everyone is accounted for.

I'm not hugely skilled or experienced and I don't know the roads so well so I don't want to be left behind (:

Welcome to the site Bnonn... don't exactly remember stopping at Domino's the other night... I remember stopping in at the Te Awamutu BK Lounge (Burger King), but it was a long day...

The rides still do happen, and they're somewhere paced anywhere from slow and relaxed to averagely fast and mildly aggressive... We always wait for people, so that no-one is left behind. Hope to see you at Caltex Dinsdale this Wednesday night (5:30pm)

So I thought to myself, "Self," I thought, "today is a beautiful day, and since I am planning to go riding on Wednesday with a bunch of people whose riding styles and route I don't know, why not prepare by taking that route in advance?"

Marvelous. I contacted my friend Jamie, with whom I often ride (and who will be coming on Wednesday as well), and off we went. We started out at about 1.45 pm yesterday (Easter Monday). All was good; we were setting a brisk but fairly relaxed pace through the Whatawhata twistes; we turned off at the right road to head over to Huntly, and we got to Huntly in good time. We stopped at KFC for a bite to eat, and discussed our different cornering methods. I like to lean off the bike more than Jamie does, and so I tend to need a less acute lean angle and thus don't scrape my boot like he does. Also my tires are stock Dunlop tourers and...well, they kinda suck for aggressive leaning.

Then it was back on the road, taking the back way to Ngaruawahia. I followed Jamie and he turned off right, and we were back into rural twisties. All was good for a while; I was thinking that this was a great route, although it would be a bit terrifying come dusk. There were some nice straights followed by good series of turns, varying from WOT to NTB (nail the brakes). We encountered a couple of cars, but not many, and we were able to pass them soon enough in a couple of the short clear straights.

Then we turned a bend and WOAH, WTF! The tar seal disappears abruptly into a metal road with fist-sized jagged stones sticking out of it. Jamie just keeps on going (he learned to ride a bike on the farm), so I circumspectly follow him, taking it a bit slower than he is, having never ridden off-road much, and hating my time on gravel. After a couple of hair-raising kilometres the road clears up and returns to the normal crappy tar seal, about the quality of which I am now nonetheless grumbling a lot less. At this stage, I'm thinking in my naive mind that I'm going to have to ask those Kiwi Biker folks what the big idea is with gravel, coz that shit ain't no fun in the dark. But we keep on going, and get to a turn-off, which Jamie takes, and I trustingly follow.

About 50 km down another road which shows no sign of ending, I'm starting to wonder whether we're going on exactly the route we had planned. Eventually, we get to a long down-hill straight, followed by another up-hill one, with a gas station (closed) and a school sitting in the dip. Pukekawa School, the sign says. Jamie pulls off into the gas station parking lot.

So about that time I'm thinking to myself, "Wait a minute..." I pull up next to Jamie and yell through my visor, "Where the fuck are we?!" He just shrugs and laughs a bit nervously. "I have no idea," he admits.

Well, obviously we're in Pukekawa. But where the hell is that? I have some signal on my phone, thankfully, so I try calling my wife to get her to look it up on zoomin or motowhere. No answer. K, what about my parents? My sister answers and says she can't find it on the map. She's looking on the Hamilton map. No, that is not going to work! She has no other map, so she says she'll look online and I must call her back in five minutes (they're on dialup).

A couple of minutes pass, and she calls me back (obviously impatient or something). She's like, the only reference to Pukekawa I can find is related to Mercer. She's a bit vague; I don't think she knows how to use a map (like most women, eh). But that gives us something. We decide to keep going; we still have a half tank of gas each, and the road has to go somewhere! I ask her to call my wife and let her know we're going to be late, and I apologize to my parents as well because we're due at their place for dinner at 6, which I doubt we'll make.

A couple of kays further on, Jamie pulls over and says he saw a turn-off that said Mercer 9 km. So we turn around and take the turn-off, and soon enough we find ourselves in Mercer. We cross the bridge, but instead of turning right onto the motorway (sign-posted and all!) Jamie keeps going, thinking the road sweeps around left onto an on-ramp. No Jamie, no it doesn't. It sweeps around left onto a gravel incline! We kinda skid and grind to a shaky stop and carefully turn around and get onto the on-ramp...and let me say, why is there gravel on the on-ramp?! It's a sweeping curve, and you're opening the throttle to get up to motorway speed, and there's gravel on it? So as you're leaning into the curve with the acceleration going down, yay, gravel! That's a wonderful idea! Sweep the damn ramp, people!

Anyway, we ride uneventfully to the Gordonton turn-off, the route to which even we can't cock up, and Jamie takes the turn-off. Fair enough, since there is a lot of traffic on SH1 and it's going slower than a dog with bricks tied to its head. We take the Gordonton road until eventually Jamie takes a turn-off marked Cambridge. Now, you'd think I'd have lost all faith in the guy at this point; he knows I have to be home soon, and my fuel gauge shows one bar left. But I follow him. We get to another turn-off to Cambridge, and I pull up and yell "what the hell!?" at him, but he just makes some unintelligible reply which is muffled by my earplugs, and takes off at a ridiculous pace. I assume he knows the road and the amount of enforcement it sees, so I follow him briskly, and we trundle along at 140 or so for a few kays (the cars are keeping up too!) Eventually we get to a sign marked to Hamilton, which he takes (thank heaven!) I'm not sure if the route he chose was really any quicker than just following Gordonton Road, but it probably wasn't much different.

I recognize this road, at least; it's the back way in/out of Morrinsville, through Silverdale. He lives in Silverdale, so I wave him off at Carrington Ave and keep going to Glenview, breaking a few speed limits in the process (my back hurts, I'm in a hurry, and I've been driving at high speed for several hours, so I'm not really inclined toward the idea of city speeds). I pick up my wife, bundle her onto the back of the bike, and head back to Silverdale/Hillcrest where my parents live, getting there at 5.45 and with 4.2 km showing on the reserve tripmeter. I am very tired!

But, today all is well. No lasting pain or bruises or stiffness, which is good. The FZ6 is very comfortable to ride long distance, all told. I was curious this morning to see where the hell we actually went, as compared to where we should have gone, so I created a map on motowhere.com. This is the route we were meant to take (http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/Sam-s-Wednesday-Night-Ride), and this is the route we did take (http://www.motowhere.com/maps/route/Bnonn-s-failed-attempt-to-follow-Sam-s-Wednesday-Night-Ride-rout) (at least, as close as I can remember given that I wasn't paying very good attention to the road signs). It says 216 km, but my odomoter tells me that between filling up in Hillcrest, and filling up again in Hillcrest (Caltex and Mobil by New World respectively), I did 280 km. As opposed to the 99 km + city travel we had intended.

So, I still don't know the route we're taking on Wednesday—but I can definitely tell you all what route we should not take!

So, I still don't know the route we're taking on Wednesday—but I can definitely tell you all what route we should not take!
haha, legendry effort dude... we actually did the ride yesterday... but yeah, we'll be out again in force tomorrow as far as i'm aware...

I don't know what happened, I stopped to change my visor, got lost in that "shortcut" to templeview, had to cruise at 105 to Pirongia because I was being followed by what looked like a mufti cop. asked some of the locals if they had seen a group of bikes go past, "No" so I turned around and went home. Yeah, Ben dropped out as well. Hopefully he'll be warmly dressed next week (:

Thanks for a great ride guys. Sorry I was slow in the twisties on the way to Kawhia. In the spirit of sharing knowledge, let me quickly report what I learned:

Having never ridden twisties in the dark before, and having not really thought about it beforehand, I found the darkness rather confounding. As it got darker, I could see less and less far ahead through the corners, and so without realizing it I was focusing my attention closer and closer in front of me, so as to have something to look at. Obviously, once it got completely dark, the only thing I could see was what was in my own headlight beam. This caused me to unconsciously fixate on a point maybe ten metres directly in front of me, and even when I was going through really tight bends, this was what I was looking at.

Needless to say that this sort of unconscious target fixation dramatically reduces your ability to ride a corner. As I think Matt pointed out, I nearly went off the road one time because of it. Got fixated on the shoulder and so...you go where you look. Because I was initially very uncomfortable riding the bends in the dark, I didn't take advantage of the guys in front of me lighting the way, and so they disappeared into the night. However, my wee brain was churning away as I rode, pondering what it was that was giving me so much grief, and wondering whether everyone else knew the road really well, just had balls of steel, or if they were way more skilled than me.

In the end I decided it was mostly the latter with bits of the former thrown in, and realized I was target fixating, after which I found myself going quite a bit faster. It takes some getting used to looking through a corner you can't actually see, though, so I was still really circumspect and took things nice and slow so as to get used to it. Hence I rocked up a good while after the rest of you fullahs. It's really hard riding by guessing, rather than by reference points. Hopefully I'll improve and not slow you guys up in future (:

On the way back I just made sure to keep someone in front of me, so that I had a reference point through the bends. Matt set a good pace on his Aquila, and as long as I could see his tail light I knew where the bend went and could take it just fine; and the headlights obviously helped too. Truth be told, it is a bit nerve-wracking riding close to reserve on roads you don't know, in the dark, where you can't see the surface or much anything else. But having said that, it was a really enjoyable ride, so thanks for having me along! I hope this post doesn't sound too whiney or like I'm trying to make excuses. I just take a fairly academic approach to riding, and if describing my own experiences can help others to learn who haven't ridden in the dark before or summat, then so much the better.

Incidentally, when you said "averagely fast and mildly aggressive" (ZeroIndex, freaking crazy Durbaners) what you really meant was "fast enough to lose your license and aggressive like the racetrack" huh? Don't you guys worry about being nailed for speeding? I have no problems gassing it on the backroads where encountering a cop is amazingly unlikely, but on the main roads it seems a bit dodgy?

No apology necessary at all.
Any group ride or in KB terms. (any ride where more than 1 is heading to the same general place at approximately the same time) people ride as individuals at a pace that is within their capabilities.
Riding nights is as you have experienced is not as straight forward as daytime. But you did well, had some :shit: moments but learnt the same.

Radar detectors are our small insurance :) And if your speed is averagly faster than 100 then its only oncoming and stationary danger you have to worry about

Haha, :shit: ...pictures really are worth a thousand words sometimes. Thanks for the encouragement. Where does one get hold of a radar detector, and how much are they? Also, when riding in a group, I presume that there is a signal for cops, aside from just slowing down real fast? Do we use the twirling finger, the tap on the head, or summat else?

We'll go with any signal. But usually a break light and smoke off the rear tyre are clear enough.

Below I posted somewhere else but the details are the same .....

Detectors are car ones, just need

1. Power - A lead to your bike electrics
2. Mounting - something you made in your garage or something from Radardirect (http://www.radardirect.co.nz/index2.html) ~$200
3. Weather protection - bit of tape in the right place or plastic cover from RadarDirect ~$45
4. Earpeice - Your choice really. You could be a dummy like the reat of us that have a curly lead which you need to connect to your helmet every time. Or be clever and get a howler thing (screamer) mounted somewhere on your bike. ~$200

So all adds up when you include the latest Detector as well ~$500

PS Could be a good idea if buying a new Detector to get one that does the new Ku Band which I understand is used widely in Europe.

Hehe, nah I didn't mean the passing so much, or Warr's speed, as the level of commitment to corners and the average speed of the group. When I ride by myself I'm really conservative. What Jamie didn't mention when you asked him about his license is that he isn't the only one riding illegally. I'm on my restricted. I've been riding for well long enough to have my full, but I didn't get my act together until shortly before my 250 fell apart, so hence I haven't had the restricted long enough to get it yet. I think I had my learner for about two and a half years. Silly me really.

But yeah, you guys ride what I would consider "pretty hard". I know that as riding goes it's not really that crazy, but given my predisposition to be cautious, and my paranoia of New Zealand's terrible road surfaces and drivers, as well as the fact that I often carry a pillion (I'm usually quite careful when doing that, but Jamie will tell stories!) I guess I'm just unaccustomed to pushing my bike as hard as it might like (: But as I said, it was good fun, and as long as I'm behind someone with a radar detector, I'm happy!

No the thing that probably most puts me off is that once you get on the track you become obsessed with that style of riding.
Now he's me; there is no track at the end of my drive, but there is a road. The road demands respect. All manner of dangers out there, which you can try to minimize, but its easy to use and the rewards are greater so-long as the law dont bite.

Lol, i was just about to ask why no-one came on the Wednesday night ride this afternoon, and realised it isn't Wednesday today... Me, Carver, and Sidewinder met up at Caltex: Dinsdale at 3:00pm today and decided to head over to Raglan... got down the bottom of the Divi and then decided due to the rain that was starting to not go to Raglan after all... got to the SH22 turnoff, and took that up to Ngaruwahia. Me and Carver froze our pants off, and Sidewinder is a crazy mofo... he was going through one right-hand upward-inclined hill, i noticed the back tire of his bike start stepping out, which he held extremely well, when he went to lean back up after the corner, it jumped up, and he got a nasty case of headshake from the handlebars... was quite a good ride, except for the cold and the wet, which i pussied out of by riding slow... another slow rider was Carver, who due to the knobbly tire on his DR, decided to go at a 'as slow as me' pace, and sat quite peacefully behinid me up the whole SH22 section (well, after the gravel part at least)

Well, it remains to be seen whether I will be seen at this Wednesday's ride. Something has absolutely thrashed my rear tire—I suspect the nasty jagged rocks which passed for a road on that mission that Jamie and I took the other weekend. I only really noticed it yesterday when my wife, cunning beast that she is, said that the rear tire was making a strange scratchy noise on the road and that the back end felt wobbly compared to normal. I hadn't noticed it at all, which goes to show that gradual deterioration is a nasty thing and also, no doubt, that I am a plonker. Anyway, I went immediately to a gas station, because Sarah is no fool and better safe than sorry, and found my rear tire had 25 psi instead of 42.

Needless to say that a swift examination of the tire surface followed. I know I should check the whole surface every time I ride, but I only check the visible part. I don't wheel my bike into/out of the garage so I don't get an opportunity to critique the tire. Maybe I should. A full check revealed several nasty little holes of indeterminate depth, several heavy scratches, and one gouge that looks like someone took to the tire with a steak knife.

So I repressurized it and checked the front as well, and found that was 30 psi instead of 36. No noticeable issues with its surface, but still a bit of a worry. Today I checked the rear again and it had lost 4 psi, so I'm working on the assumption that at least one of those damage areas has created a slow leak of some kind. So I am going to need to push forward my plans to put some Avon Storms on. But whether I'll be able to do it by Wednesday remains to be seen. I wasn't expecting to spend an extra $500 this week.

So I'll let you guys know, k.

It was great to have you on the ride, and it was me that noticed you almost jump off the road... was a right-hand corner, and you got slightly too close for comfort to the edge of the road, but I think most people do that at some stage in their life (I know I have...)

averagely fast and mildly aggressive means: go fast when you want to, go slow when you want to (go at your own pace), and mildly aggressive: I've only found one way to get scrubbing done on tyres..... and that's by mildly throwing the bike into corners... must admit I definitely enjoy day-light rides a lot better, especially when they have 40km's of gravel in them :D

Yeah, I've been working on my cornering lately, since I have been getting into bad habits of not putting the theory I know into practice. I have to agree about daylight, though; I much prefer to be able to see the vanishing point of a corner.

I'm getting my new Avon Storms fitted tomorrow afternoon, but once they're done, unless a certain cheque clears, I will have about $3 in my bank account. So it's unlikely I'll be coming tomorrow evening, as I won't be able to pay for petrol. Annoying since I would have liked to scrub in the new tires. Next week though.

Points to think about now that the whole ride is in darkness.
Route - As little as possible on main state h/ways.
Gravel - Yes Rob.. but not too much.
Food/refreshments - Think about a possible pub either where we get to, or on the way back before we hit hams. If you make it into the city limits people just cant be bothered and head home!

Thought on a destination. Okoroire, Someone figure out how to get there off the main roads

sorry to hear that you couldn't keep up... we'll give you the excuse that you had the smallest bike there... the ride back was nice... sitting at 140km/h Ben (the guy on the GS500) has decided he doesn't like night-riding at 'our sort of speeds', and that if ever comes on another night ride again, 100km/h will be his speedlimit... haha, what exactly are you gonna do at 100km/h? The guy on the RGV250 says he might be keen for more rides in the future, so Carver, if we organize another Sunday afternoon ride, he might come along, although Ben said he isn't keen for gravel, which means he'll have to find other bikers to hang out with... kinda like that Harley rider on Kahikatea Drive... Trip meter shows 178k's Was a good outing for them that turned up!!
Good spot for a feed, a return trip in the future would not be out of the question.
And the rest of you guys how bout thinking of possible route / destinations.

Ive heard Okoroire is a good ride, out thru mistery creek over the river at karapiro (back on the main road but only for a K or two) turn off at the Mobil and follow the road all the way there

Would there be any more suitable rides for people like Ben and myself?

Come on the same rides, just go at your own pace... We always stop here and there for the pack to regroup... if we didn't, we would never see Warr or TerminalAddict

I might come for the odd ride as well on Wednesday night, I'm slow so that'll be another one for the slow pack.
Problem is I don't get home from work until about 6pm - normaly too late for you guys, but if I knew where your going I might catch up - eventually.

K, emergency post...

Since tomorrow is a holiday and Carver is crazy, Carver, Sidewindow and I are meeting up at Shell Pukete at 9pm tonight and heading out to some beach for the night...

If you wanna come along, basically bring yourself, your bike, sleeping bag... and any other essentials you think you'll need...

See whoever is crazy enough to be in Hamilton's Loose Ewe-nit, PEACE OUT!!

Don't see you jumpin at the idea of spending a winter night on the beach - not even fishin. (should do that again sometime)
If you guys are spending the night on a beach out at Raglan keep your eyes peeled for a UFO's

Last time I checked it wasn't winter yet. The shop I get my lunches from doesn't have wedges except during winter and today when I went in, no wedges.

turnoff towards SH27 --> straight across it towards SH29 --> then across that onto the Taotaoroa road --> which brings you back to Karapiro

No UFO's in Papamoa

Not completely sure, but I think we all escaped anal-probe free... you fix your bike yet?

Heading up to Whangamata and back via Waihi is also quite a nice route back :)

We can only plan a trip if we know where we planned on going :p it just kinda fell into place in a really good way :D

Instead of Raglan, Me, Carver, Sidewindow and Pathos (His birthday today), met up at Pukete Shell @ 9pm. Then headed to Tauranga. Sidewindow got a bit throttle happy before the Kaimai's, and landed himself a speeding ticket.

Stopped at the Caltex just before Tauranga for a smoke and to decide where we were going. Ended up heading down to Papamoa, rode 500 meters up the beach on the sand (friggin difficult that), and parked up next to a deserted campfire that had been going for quite sometime. No-one else was about, so we claimed it as ours, and hopped into our sleeping bags and went to sleep.

Woke up this morning and headed back down the beach (yes, on the sand) and up the path back to the road. Headed into the Mount, where the whole Anzac Day thingy was going on. Hung around there for a while, stopped in at the BK Lounge for a bite to eat, and then headed up to Whangamata via Waihi. When we got to Whangamata, there were old-skool cars everwhere. Turns out, it was the Beach Hop. We parked our bikes up and wandered around for about 2 hours, where we saw DMNTD on his ZX-10, and partner on the Aprillia RSVR (can't remember her name). Wandered back to the bikes, and headed back to Hamilton via Waihi again...

Was a fun ride for the Hamilton Loose Ewe-nit, and I'm sure there will be many more random rides to come... as soon as I get a job so I can afford some petrol...
