Nice going !!!

Now, one bit of advice I can offer, check the power valve cables. Make sure when you turn the ignition on, you hear a whirr, whirr noise. That's the power valves self testing.

They're great bikes, one of the best Yamaha has made to date.

Way hey! Great bike, and one that is actually APPRECIATING. You'll love it!

It still puts a smile on my face when I think about the one I had (sexy black/red)....bloody hell I've just realized how long ago that was and it's reminded me I must start checking for those pesky hairs that only grow outta old peoples ears.......

They're great bikes, one of the best Yamaha has made to date.

Also, during this sequence they open and close. By stopping it half way, I think they are fully open, make sure the little fork lines up with the hole by the power valve cover, that way you know they are adjusted correctly... Just make sure the cables aren't too tight, since it labours the power valve motor and can cause premature failure... or slow operation...

Run a good quality 2-stroke oil.
Let it warm up properly before thrashing it...

Have fun...

JUST WATCH THE POWER BAND AT FIRST UNTILL YOU GET USE TO IT

yeah i have been warned bout that .. I have a 10 k block (the road almost opposite).. only have to deal with about 100 metres of main road far end & about 500 odd meters this end of state highway .. but the remainder is pretty quiet, hilly a few corners .. I reckon after riding it a couple hundred times I might get the feel for the bike .. :Punk: but since its been over 20 yrs since i have ridden a bike & never ridden on the road .. planning to attend the march track day to be the nana out the back & learn lines etc & take it pretty quietly ..

guess i better run to read buckbucks thread .. wooo hooooooo getting excited bout all da new stuff arriving (thanks MT) & a bike in da shed ..

I'll even forgive it for being a red one ... :dodge:

Bloody excellent! I had one of those years ago and I still consider it to be one of the most enjoyable bikes I've owned. Insane performance and huge fun per dollar ratio. Thirsty little bastards, but great fun no less, and vast scope for tuning and tweaking. Shocked the living shit out of a number of 750 owners I used to ride with. Sigh... deep nostaglia moment.

well ok I am female & never claimed to know anything about bikes ..

laffing its actually a yamaha RZ 350 ... yr I believe from the vin plates is 83 model

she is now home ...

first order of business will be to find out the process for re-registering ... can anyone help with info .. she has the vin plate number stamped on both that & the bike frame but been deregistered for at least a few yrs & longer no proof of plates only got paper advising that the police have no interest in the bike .. what else will be required & does she need to be inspected, any idea of costs involved ..

once I know the cost for that .. then we can move forward in cleaning her up, & organising the changing of fluids, & tune up

I have free lease of her til feb 08 so plenty of time to ride, be more confident & get to full license ... ( since i am well over 25)

A little bigger than my 250, but mines a whopping 2 years newer, nyah nyah! :wari:

Seriously, watch the power band, learn to find the beginning, then play with it slowly.

I was almost chucked off Daisy a number of times in my first few weeks of riding, now it's awesome to hit the bottom of an uphill, drop a gear and twist the wrist, and feel the bike gagging to climb.

Again, congrats and enjoy!

well firstly big big thank to sugi for checking the bike out, & changing out her fluids .. internally she is clean as a whistle ..

would not stay running when we checked her out .. ahhhhh reason, cause there was dirt/pebble in the line

thanks to AJ & Mudboy for helping/supervising :D & u4ea & Sallo (nice to met you by the way) thanks for your company & the laughs :D

well she is going to be a great runner ... sugi gave her a good trash on fairly flat tyres with a loose chain LOL .. & she just started to run sweeter & sweeter
mind you we could have roasted marshmellows off the sparks that was coming out from her .. quite the lil show she was putting on :D

apart from the smoke trail at the start .. she hardly smoked at all after the third pass ... so should not attract the boys in blue ... we hope :D

apparently she has been a race bike at some stage .. sump plug has been drilled .. airfilter clean as a whistle petrol clean oil clean .. but all have been changed

battery would not work but when AJ took it off later . the red wire was completly broken off .. so simple fix ..

a few more things that need looking at .. & definately a degrease is next on the agenda ..

all the bolts need a going over chain need tightening .. but what a sweet ride she will be

u4ea
26th January 2007, 21:49

Cool bike.....I had an 83 RD350LC tricked up and an 85 RD350YPVS and still great bikes.....2 strokes are underrated...............the carbs are easy to balance, should have a hole on side with mark although I ised to stick my ears next to and listen for the drop and I used to take the baffles out every 2 weeks, pour petrol on and set light and then wire brush.

Congrats.........

Oh and I found handling peaked after 80mph....aparently the frames were designed that way.......everything just seemed to flow after 80mph...........got 135 out of mine.

They used to have a race series for the YPVS................hence a hight theft rate of around 80%..............tis true.

I had mine from new and was told that the YPVS kick depended on how it was run in..................

first off what an awesum weekend its been

with the crew on friday nite sorting out the new fluids & sussing out a few issues,

then BBQ at sels last nite (blardy great to catch up with everyone again, great company great food & of course liquid refreshments, although for me they had to wait til I got home since i was sober driver, but got to bed about 3.30am .. ouch)

sunday morning is here before you know it ... after my weekly phone call with my mum, & sneaking quitely outta the house to deal with my horses (for sum funny reason I think i had a slight hangover or was i just tired) & picking up u4ea it was back to my house to deal with muh bike today ..
fortunately 86gsxr was awake & had the bike outta the shed (after getting saturated by the hose heheheheheh bet that woke ya) it was time to pull her apart & deal with sum more issues ..

Alistair managed to fix the rev counter (speedo is next time) battery terminals (yeee haaa battery is now working) we have a list of the things that need fixing .. top of lists are .. INFLATE those tyres ..replace sprockets & chain ..rear suspension ... rubber peice in middle has perished .. tank bolt .. a few welds ...

while alistair was fiddling with motor bits ... jodi (u4ea) worked mostly on getting crap off the fairings ..( I was helping ... honest .... it was my job to keep everyone hydrated coffee & then berocca were essential, & of course lunch ..)

Ant arrived back just as Alistair was gearing up .. so did not take much of a prod to get Alistair to take her for a cruise down the road .. this time no smoke trail .. & ypvs system came into play quite nicely .. but still on nearly flat tyres was not a real nice ride yet ... but a smile came out no less ...

anyhow since my connection is crappy I will post pics later on (rural dial up suxs lemons) but she is looking real purty

thanks to Jodi for all your help today in cleaning her :D & Alistair thanks buddy you rock .. :D great company, great conversation, & plenty of laughs .. what an awesum weekend ..

  :innocent: :sunny:

ohh yeah .. hehehehe .. once I was all alone hehehehe & she needed putting to bed . I started her up & went round my back yard just in first ... just for that first weeeee feel ...........NOICEEEEEEEEEEEE ;)

thanks Lissa she sure is ... copied from the newbie training thread today

well sorry its not sunday .. and as i have today off ... tires are now inflated .. I thought since no one is about .... I would have a wee play with the new toy ..

what did I learn ... (remembering its over 20 yrs since i last road a bike .. & never a road bike)

well I am only doing circles on my back lawn .. through the carport .. (wearing a nice track already)

finding netural from first gear ... trying to find out how many revs i need to take off smoothly without reving her to high or two low & stalling ..

I am much more smoother on right hand circles than left .... must practice left more ... & look where i am going .. focus

getting sore arms .. must remember to use my knees more .. that took a bit of pressure off my arms .. & look where i am going .. focus

also how smoothly can I brake to slow & speed up slightly ....

ohh yeah breaking in new gear .. boots do make it easier to change back to neutral ... had issues finding netural but was being to strong & finding second instead ...

ok break time to take it all in .. but can ya tell i am smiling ... might take her down the cattle race in the week .. good track not too rough

well she is still unregistered, no wof , me with no licence .. but it had to be done ... :gob:

with my mentor keeping an eye on me & promising to go slow we headed out for a quick ride ... first off 86gsxr took her for a wee blat up the road we were heading down first, just checking that she was running sweet (after inflating tires & changing broken clutch lever)

then it was my turn .. I do admit I was a bit nervous .. but that took all of about 30 seconds to go .. :Punk:

must say its been a pretty hard out weekend & definately feeling the effects today so it was only just over 2 laps of the 10k block. Headed up towards the end of the road .. apparently I was sitting on 100ks (my speedo not working) & as tired as i am .. there was just one big grin on the whole ride ..

got buffed a few times when the wind caught me .. but no biggie .. must remember to cancel indicators ( never needed any on motox track lol) :dodge:

played with down gearing to slow the bike as i approached corners .. & just mainly got the feel for her .. :innocent:

might sneak out tomorrow morning before it gets busy on the roads .. :innocent:

other than that my mentor will have to give his view on how it went  .. from mine blardy primo ... :D

Yep, a good first up start alright. Nice and confident, no stalls, and even signs of a lean around those bends! And you overtook me very safely. Not even phased by the truck coming in the opposite direction, that's yet another advantage of a bike, you can move over if you have to!

The term 'two smoker' - well, very appropriate, and a lovely shade too:yes:

And I must say I'm very impressed with the quality of those Yamaha indicators:yes:

100 k. Sure was in places, just go at your own pace:sunny:

As for melted tar, you're onto it. Try and remember that it's there at this time of year and try not to hit it at speed leaned over. And that goes for an infinite number of things that are, and will be on the road. Painted lines, manhole covers, animals (I saw a loose cow on the way home!), stone chips, gravel, stuff that falls off cars and trailers, farm vehicles, and of course cars! Always take road works advisory signs seriously, same goes for corner advisories! Watch out for shit (literally) off the back of stock trucks and runs. Apart from being slippery, it sticks to your fairing:yes:

Just know your limits, bikes and personal. Be hyper aware of your environment at all times.

Read the rode code and never do anything illegal:innocent:

There's so much more, learn all you can from all the talent and experience out there. This is just the beginning and you never stop learning.

Above all ENJOY:yes:

yes on our ride we also had pot holes, loose gravel, & parked cars with trailer & other traffic & person crossing the road ..so yes started keeping an eye out for potential hazards & the wet tar was on the last bend & still needed to turn the corner so de- accelerated, & went carefully through it

from another post found this http://www.drivinginstructor.co.nz/index.php?goto_page=courses/test_menu.php its great, only got a few questions wrong on my first attempt (& not read the road code yet)

bikes/horses/life you learn something new every day, & its so much damn fun. But also big thanks to my Mentor for changing the broken clutch lever & test riding her & either me following him or him following me. (must practice turning off the indicators:blink:  ) LOL its great getting that first lil ride under the belt not so nervous now .. just looking forward to getting us both legal enough to ride it (even though she is a 350 )

after AJ has changed the sprockets & chain only things left to get her warrented is to fix speedo & lights on the dash ... any clues guys on getting these ones sorted ??

At vehicle testing station .. reeve st have to book her in so getting wof done at same time .. should not be issue with VIN as everything matches + have stuff from cops that there is no interest in bike .

check out the VTNZ web site .. they do the VIN ... mine already has one but still has to be checked out before getting plates .. its $100 for the inspection .. then re register & wof on top of that .. approx 400 for the inspection & register for 12 months .. cheaper for 12 than 6months .. & wof

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/factsheets/06.html that will give ya more info on it hon

Motorcycle
Less than 61 cc - Petrol driven 6 months 150.35 12 months 253.08

Well sunday is almost over & Thanks to a non kber freind (hurry up & sign up Mike then get ya shit together & get ya hunk of wheels outta the garage) the broken bracket on the front fairing & oil tank are now fixed, dash has 3 new wee lights so all go .. & found out that the washer with the lugs on it are missing thats why the speedo is not working ...

The bike is booked to the mechanic tomorrow, sort out washer for speedo, balance wheels fill out paperwork for the wof regarding the brakes & ready for re register, order a new handlebar .. this one is bent but should pass warrent .... & depending on what he says booking for the inspection at vtnz on Wed ..

she is now LEGAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:wari: :wari: :wari: :wari: :wari: :wari: :wari:

well damn its been a long stressful afternoon with the bureaucrats from 1pm & right on 5pm she became legal ..... woo farken hooooo, so quick text to my mentor that i wanna ride NOW ... !!!! after mucking around trying to get the registration on .. ( not to mention the bracket upside down .. not that i put in on of course :dodge: ) & putting back to back tape on to hold the plate...

off we went to friends place so everything could be attached properly ... of we toodle ... get bout 3 ks down the road .. & a farken horrible noise & the newly fixed speedo was telling me that i was doing 140 ks .. errr yeah right .. so pulled over told alistair what was going on .. & he took her for a run down the road ..yup consensus was speedo .. so limped to shannon with Alistair hooning past then coming back just to show me that his bike was not broken .. funny as .. i just waved ... :Punk:

fixed the plate on .. removed the speedo cable & corrected the bracket for the registration .. a quick blat with Alistair showed that the problem resolved ....

off to u4ea house but she was not home ... so only one thing for it .. the big block .. shannon - foxton & levin .. yeah i can hear ya all now what big block .. but hey when ya toodle about a 10 k block it seems to be huge & when ya have not ridden a bike for 20+ yrs .. apart from a wee flick up the road it felt like a big ride !!! ok ok ok i hear ya all .. but not really ... was blardy awesum .. got home just on dusk .., & the days stresses are gone ... so thats that for tonite .. now time to take it all in .. & still smiling ..

thanks hon .. but call me level headed, I never ride to prove anything to anyone ... just enjoy the experience .. My mentor had a play & went off into the distance but i still rode to my capabilites & experience as i knew he would be waiting for me up the road ..

guess Al would have to pass comment on that .. but I was fully aware of my speed & surroundings .. ;)

soooooooooo when are you coming to ride the horses buddy .. we selling tickets you know  :dodge:

Yes, well done on your first 'cross country' Chanceyy:yes:

I thought you did very well and you can only get better with experience. It seems all those practise runs around the front garden paid off eh:yes:

Shame about the speedo, that's annoying and another expense to deal with, but a minor thing in the big picture. On the plus side though, the indicators seemed to be working much better:yes:

Good on you for keeping yourself focussed on getting onto two wheels and for making a huge effort to learn all you can about staying on them. And what a great team effort eh!

The bike looks good on the road and I bet she's loving being there again:yes:

There's many miles ahead for the both of you, and every one of them will be a learning experience.

OK, time to sign up for some rides then

P.S. The horses didn't look too bad, it was all those bloody dogs that worried me :gob:

yeah its certainly the furtherest I have travelled on the road riding LOL was working hard to remember to turn the amber ones off this time .. not worried bout the speedo when i can work out exactly how many revs for the diff speed limits it will be all sweet ..

the team effort has blown me away .. there is no way that I can repay the generousity of everyone who has helped in one way or another ... esp to Mike & Julie who have given me the free lease for 12 months .. I have advised that I will be buying the bike .. even before the ride last nite .. I feel really comfy handling this bike & she is fun ..

I have stated in here my personal thanks to everyone who has helped .. you all know who you are .. you guys simply rock ... & you have really helped make all of my dreams come true sooner than expected ...

Al thank you for your support, help in fixing the bike, freindship & putting up with my stupid questions & harrassement for the next ride .. ;)

Jodi, Ant, MT, Mike (non kber) & AJ quite simply without you guys the bike would not be on the road, or would take longer or more expense to get there .. thank you

if i have left anyone out sorry .. but its been a pretty emotional few days & yesterday was certainly the low & high of it all ..

yes I will certainly be attending some rides .. but just need to get that wee confidence built up first .. mind you dragging off the intersections was fun last nite til i got to my rev limit .. lol then i was left in the dust .. & that was totally fine .. still smiling & laughing

ohh yeah at least horses were in the paddocks (& you was not up close & personal with them) & the dogs just think that everyone loves them:gob: .. funny how whizz did not like it when you had the helmet on :dodge: .. but guess he will get used to it when i start riding bike to horses each day:yes: , but yeah they can be overwhelming .. esp if all 7 are there at the same time .. that was only 6  ;)

well I was not going to post this weekend but its been such a fantastic time that I just had too ...

well following on from yesterdays basic handling course & having a wee nana poodle with U4ea yesterday afternoon, I found a new issue with the old girl.

If you quitely slip through the gears ( with good revs inbetween) get her into top gear on the open road (round 100ks) & a horrible nosie comes from the gear box .. so slow & change down .. funny its only done it with me, not the boys that trash the pants off her .. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm is this the trick to riding her ?? does she like a trashing to keep her happy ..

so tried it caned it through the gears into top & no noise ... hmmmm :innocent:

anyhow today get myself into a frame of mind to ride her by myself on state highway 57 to meet u4ea & AJ in shannon .. did not put her into top & just cruised up about 90ks, get to shannon & idling she does not sound good at all, another non kber friend on his way home from work took her for a ride .. yeah sounded like gearbox or clutch .. toss up do I take her or go home & get the truck ..(had so geared myself into riding her that far)

waited til AJ arrived & he tried her out .. (of course he thrashed her & no issues) toss up .. decided to carry on riding her up there if worse came to worse at least i was not on my own & had others there ... also he thought that a few Kbers there could give me some good advice on her .. so off we went

so took her a bit quietly for the first part .. watched AJ & U4ea riding off into the distance .. but that was ok I needed to build that confidence & they did wait for me ;)

after we get closer to palmerston & i was starting to get a feel for this riding lark & got more brave about getting more revs outta the girl .. On number 1 line I stayed beside AJ & since i have no speedo sat on about 7,000 revs .. stopped to wait for 86gsxr to arrive AJ suggested to really get the revs going rather than trying to slip her in quietly so tried this on the rest of the trip to manfield ... what an awesome ride that bit was .. I was still smiling as we came into manfield ..

Aj introduced me to Kick from sidecar 27 (south island crew) & gary .. thanks Guys .. pretty much narrowed it down to the clutch basket, so before manfield this weekend we need to have a wee peek at that ..

went to pick the bike up from the pits area, & proceeded to give my first pillion ride LOL :dodge: well it was a change for him to be behind me rather than the other way round :dodge: & no stalls no wobbles, & I think he survived the experience, not that he would be keen to repeat it ... not sure if thats cause:
1) being pillion is not as much fun as riding
2) or the experience was so traumatic
3) a woman being in charge ;)
:killingme:

so time to ride home ... hmm had a massive headache by this time, to much sun/noise maybe .. ( must remember to pack some nuerofen in my jacket)

just outta feilding had a slight opps moment on a bend .. a bit hot into it & starting fixating on going straight .. got to the outside white line .. thought ohh damn ..look through the curve, look through the curve .. keep on the gas .. whew it worked .. bike got a few medium wobbles but managed to ride through it .. ok time to concentrate on riding forget the headache a few other lessons learnt here but glad bikes is quite like horseriding & focus does work .. more on that later .. other than that an awesome ride home .. a bit quicker than on the way up .. but then I have no speedo, thats my excuse & i will stick to that ...

so in summary .. we watched a great days racing with some absolutely great company what more can a person want on a sunday ... :Punk: :Punk:

Well done Chanceyy!! I saw your bike at Manfield yesterday:love: but no sign of you...will have to catch up next time ok. This is so cool to see you doing so bloody well on the little rocket. I knew you would, ;) I had a lightbulb moment the other night and realised my early days of horseriding have helped my bike riding. I prefer downhill to hillclimbing and I worked out why. I had this little black pony, Lubra,(see profile pic) and she would always bolt down hills. I would have to really push her to canter uphill but just point her down any hill and hang on for grim death. There was no way to stop her either. She taught me well though...how to fall off, then how to go really fast down hill and stay on. I believe the same principles apply to bikes so if you ever get in a scary situation you know you have the skills to ride it out. Always look for an escape and never give up.
Looking foward to catching up with you again soon. Stay safe out there hon!

and

yeah alot of the principals in horseriding so do relate to motorbikes as clive will hopefully find out this weekend .. I am sure i would have binned yesterday without that focus through the corner stuff at the end .. by changing my focus and looking hard to where i wanted to go it got me through the ops moment ..

thanks for all your support hon, sorry i did not catch up with you yesterday but did not venture into the pits much .. anyhow I think the bike liked being down there looking purty .. am sure she is a female herbie .. ;)

well its been an interesting two weeks ..

Battery would not hold a charge so into the Mechanic she goes

Regulator/rectifier was not charging battery & the battery was not holding a charge either .. :nono:

hmmm time for a wee bit of mechanical surgery :dodge:

discussed all the things that needed checking .. biggie was carbs esp since she had been sitting for so long without running

hmm well went to pick her up & Rob was suprised that she was even running .. & ran esp well at manfield. The choke was blocked the idle was blocked & the left carb was almost blocked & the jets were that far off being set correctly it was not funny .. :shit:

Guess that explains why the right pipe smoked much more than the left .. prob now solved she smokes evenly now:love: ... watch out those behind me .. double the smoke now

but does she run better .. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I kinda think so .. but not being to sure on how two strokes should sound .. hmm she kinda sounds like a chainsaw at the mo  .. esp if you cruise through the gears .. hmmmm well i know she liked a thrashing & a bit of a hard time (are bikes like their owners  :innocent: ) so started to give her a bit of death ohh yeah now she is sounding less like a sick weedeater & more like the smooth sounding bike I know she can be ...

hmm so two stroke owners is this normal .. the kinda missing sound but when giving it gas smooth & sweet ..

What oil are you using, ive noticed that oil can make a massive difference in how they sound, ive started using average 2 stroke oil because it came in 4L one's but ive noticed my bikes alot louder now compared to the high quality stuff i was using last week, guess im going to go back to the better quality stuff once this is all gone :).

Ive got a blown base gasket right now so mines sounds like utter shit! running far to lean because the airs getting in tho the open gasket. it wont idle for much more than 5 seconds awww its sick :(, oh well changing the gasket over next week!.

Good luck with your 2 stroke :).
