There's a '87 CBR400R "Aero" Limited Edition for sale in QLD for just $3,850.
Couldn't find out much info about the bike, other that it's got 59 hp @ 12500 rpm, 39 Nm @ 10000 rpm torque, and 110/90-16 front with 130/70-18 rear wheels and weighs 165kg dry. It's done nearly 9000 kms.

It's more affrodable than the '87 VFR750F which is $5,000, as I'll have to put it on the credit card. The info in the ads is wrong, but then the people selling the bikes must have bought them in a "grey imports". Worth the money or should I look at something else?

Digsaw has one which he uses to great effect. Had huge dramas replacing the engine (it went "Pop!!) - seems that "one model" may have more than one engine. And Yes, it is a grey import, so you can figure out for yourself how easy it will be to get parts for it.

So you want to buy a bike on your credit card? You do realise that that is the most expensive money you can get (short of going to the Shylocks)??

Personnally I'd stick with your GS500. Basicly an early CBR600 with a smaller capacity engine built for the Japanese market.

Thanks for the info. BTW, my credit card has an interest rate of 11.5% which is cheaper than an unsecured bank loan, and I don't have to fill in any forms etc.

ok lets go miles off topic and delve into your finances lol, anyway, why not use the bike as security on a secured loan?

"Coz I'm lazy. Easier to pay off the Credit card. No shit, you have to jump though hoops and there's tons of red tape. It takes at least 2 weeks to get a personal loan from a bank. There's income verification and all that. The privacy laws in OZ are a lot stronger than in NZ.

There's also 55 days interest free with the low rate VISA I've got. I get paid very well, so it won't take long to pay the money back. No penalties for early repayment either.

That's FAR too much money for a 20 year old 400. Some of the Jap imports have low mileage but 9000km sounds very suspect to me. Make me an offer on my 86 VFR750 as I'm wanting something taller and comfier for my 6ft 3 frame. I take credit cards too BTW!

yer scratcha that milage would have been 2nd or possibly 3rd t1me round da clock.

limited edition....jublee red/blue/white is bloody hard to comeby round here.

Hillbilly... its like all things if its wat ya want go for it... ya have to be happy/comfortable with what ever ya get.

IMHO; i just love da Aero has da '87red/white & '86 blue/white
call me crazy I dont care. just lov these very forgiving bikes..... but its all personial choice

I had an Areo LE for bloody ages.

When I went shopping for a new bike back in 1992 (after writing of my original 87 CBR400) I was after a 600. Trouble was the 600 was over priced!

I saw this 400 LE with 23000k on it for $4800. Lovely condition.
Took it around to a local biking hero, and asked him what he thought.

He said brilliant! If you ever pop the motor, stick a 600 in it and go F3 racing ;)
They won't check until you win too much!

Well, I never did pop the motor, and it had served me brilliantly for over 5 years before a truck didn't realise that I had the right of way....

Any how, the thing was a brilliant little bike.
Did a two up 2000k tour on it. Yep, was a bit small for that, but we did it.
I am 6'1"!

It is NOT a 600 with a 400cc engine (as bonez said, and he should remember the bike as I worked with him when I owned it). It IS a scaled down 600. They handle very well, and I was offered a GS500 (very new at the time) as a straight swap by a mate who thought it was brilliant.

I did damage the plastic, and it was impossible to fine more in that colour... But, doesn't mean you will!
Mirrors in that colour were easy to come by at a price (but that was 10 years ago!), and I did go through a few... Dam birds!

The best thing was, it was more economical than the 600 (on all consumables too), but kept them VERY honest on the track days.

3800? Yep, I would buy a tidy one for that, but about 800 would be for the memories.
9000k? Possible, as somebody may have wanted to collect it.
Regardless, if the gearbox changes smoothly, and engine sounds like a truck turbo (as opposed to a truck), then the thing will run with Honda reliability for years. Just use good oil!

Parts????? never had a problem getting them, but then i have not needed much, brake pads,fork seals,batteries,one chain but tires can be a bit of a problem as rears seem to only do about 4-5k,fronts about 7k.
When i brought it,it had 8k on the clock,was in mint condition but rear brake disc was shagged,fitted new disc and pads and 50k later it still looks unmarked.
Sweet bike,fast,handles great and if yar a bit short in the stumps like me you will just love it, just dont drop it, there is just nooo plastic parts to be found for them

last time i spoke to 'just fairings' in hamilton .. they would make a mold for the aero if required but the fairings need to be in reasionable state... a catch 22 lol
