I've recently brought a gsxr 750 with an ohlins type 4 rear shock. As I've started to get used to the bikes handling it seems like it has too much preload set. It has no sag from top out when unladen and only about 20mm with me on it. I was wanting to try backing it off a bit. It has a remote hydraulic preload adjuster but that is set to minimum and also has the more traditional lockring on the springs presumbly for coarse adjustments. It has a pin going through the top lockring which prevents me from turning it and I'm not quite sure how to remove it. Anyone know how to get that pin out of the way?

It does sound like there is too much initial preload wound on. I've never had to reduce the initial setting, on account of the fact Robert Taylor lives 70km from me, and I get him to do it. Give him a bell, 06 278 4160, and he'll more than likely put you straight, or give Shaun from this site a pm, he'll help too

Well it might not be the initial setting being a second hand bike and all. But it feels a bit unforgiving at the moment.

The pin is only pressed in there & shouldn't be to hard to pull out . Check your spring weight which should be written on it around the coils of the spring . If ya get stuck Ph R-Taylor as he knows what he is doing !

The pin that locks the preload collar is normally removed when the spring ISN"T fitted to the shock. There is a specific measurement for the distance the collar is wound down, the guys who are really in the know (eg.. Robert etc) would be the best to contact. When the shock is set up properly for you, it'll perform great.
