Helmets.... anyone got anything bad to say about Shoei XR1000's?

Does anyone have good / bad comments or experience with Shoei XR1000's? Just looking at one myself would apperciate some real world comments.

Ask VivaVee, he just bought one.

They're a damn fine helmet; if you happen to have a Shoei head you can't get much better.

I personally like the Diabolic graphics scheme.

I've had a Diabolic for about four months, I really like it. And I LOVE the graphics - they're very clever, there's lots of dark blue metallic stars in the dark parts that you only see in the bright sunlight.

I don't think it's any quieter than my previous helmet, but I don't believe you can get a completely silent helmet. Also I ride naked bikes so would get more wind hitting my head than some of you guys with big fairings.

Prior to that I had an XVR Myazaki (also sometimes called "Ace" or "Trump").

One thing I found: in the XR1000 I needed a size smaller than my previous one - try them on and make sure what size you need, don't just buy the size you currently have (if you currently wear a Shoei).

I'm pleased they've gone back to D-rings.

Linda is quite right, for some reason XR1000 sizing is different to other Shoeis.
You won't be disappointed with one, they're an excellent helmet. Give us a call on 3007500 for a price.

I had an XR800 which I had to replace after I 'proved' its worth - never felt a thing.

I think the XR1000 is quieter than my earlier XR800. But then I could be getting deafer. I went for the TC-1 graphics - I thought the Diabolic was a bit dark. Check out the Shoei website for all the options

The sizes have definitely dropped by one - so take care with the fitting.

I cursed the D-rings to start with. The XR800 had a push-in thingy. But I quickly got used to them and they now feel more secure

Flow through is better than the XR800 so its cooler and doesn't mist as much

There are some differences in shape between different helmet brands and models, so it's important that you make sure you have a Shoei head and not an Arai head, for example. People are usually one or the other, and if you don't have a Shoei head you will end up with (for example) a sore forehead (common affliction for people with Arai heads who buy a Shoei by mistake).
Me - I have a turnip head, so any old bucket will do (as long as it costs less than $50).

Yea it a Shoei head I have I know. The BMW sportsintegral helmet also has a nice fit as well..... bit on the pricy side thou.

I've had the XR1000 for about a year now and I think it's an excellent helmet. There is less wind noise then my previous (XR900) and more importantly there is less wind buffetting because of the "wing" at the rear of the helmet.
Also changing visors is a breeze - takes about 10 seconds to swap clear for tinted. I'd also recommend a fog guard for about $60 they do a good job and help make the helmet look xtra mean!! :headbang:

I've got a Fog City on both my clear and chrome mirror visors - it's wonderful stuff. Just make sure you get it placed correctly, so you don't see the edges in your periphery vision.

Firestormer, you're quite right re the Shoei/Arai heads - I've liked some of the Arai graphics over the years, but the shape just doesn't suit my head.

VivaVee - that's what I meant about the D-rings, that they are more secure. With the "clip" type you still have to adjust the strap from time to time (I ended up sewing mine in the correct position on my XVR), and it only takes a second to do up the D-rings.

How much did that set you back?? Am very seriously considering buying an XR1000. Only problem is that they changed the visor system from the XR900 to 1000. Real pain in the arse, now the 2 tinted and 3 clear visors I have for my XR900 and Raid are obselete and I'll have to shell out another $150 odd for a tinted visor. Does anyone know if the XR900 visors can fit the XR1000? Or are they completly different?

Mrs H also wears an XR1000. She has choices. Hers has a silver starburst graphic. She also loves her lid -- vastly superior in every way to her previous Cirus/HJC.

They have a slightly different fitting system from the Raid/900 to the 1000. They can't be swapped. Hamish is pleased cos he now has my old XVR clear visor with the fog city for his XR900!

I can confirm that the XR800 visors don't fit the XR1000 either. So that makes two spare useless visors ...

The XR1000 is also (for me at least) firmer around the cheekbones - I found out this morning that the sunnies are a much tighter fit with the new helmet. It took until this morning because I had a tinted visor for the XR-800 and I got the XR-1000 in the dead of winter. I needed to sleep late this morning to actually have the sun in my face as I rode to work ...

Heh. My life was well and truly saved by an XR-800 and goddamn I miss that lid... so quiet and comfortable.
Unfortunately it also changed the shape of my head substantially so the shoei-shoe just dont fit no more. :crybaby:
I have to settle for the japanese shape Arai which although high quality and well contructed, is noisy, and suffers badly from internal reflections on the visor.

interesting... I took a size small in the last 2 shoei's i've had(perfect), yet for a shoei x-spirit i'm a medium. on the net the shoei info always read.. size 55-56=Small, but a site i recently found which listed the x-spirit said 56cm=Medium.

Zapf... the UK bike magazine RiDE has just undertaken a test of a range of helmets (28 different ones to be exact). The XR1000 was one of them - and it was in the top five, getting 60 out of 65 points, based on the following criteria:

Impact resistance (dropped over a set distance onto an anvil at a speed of 7.5m/s): 17/20
Spike test (literally dropped a 3kg spike from 3 metres): 10/10
Strap test (10 kg weight attached and dropped 0.75m - they then measure how much the strap stretches): 10/10
Road Testing (a rider goes out and rides for hundreds of miles - so a bit subjective, but given what you want to know, very important): 23/25.

Their overall comments: Quality feeling lightweight helmet that protects well and passed the spike test. We experienced minor problems with the vents not stopping misting on cold days. Fantastic visor mechanism.
