View Full Version : Dogs killed cat....

8th February 2007, 09:00
My dogs killed a cat this morning (4.30am)...
It was on our property (Fully fenced etc)...
But... The dogs didnt bite it at all... I woke up when I heard rustling outside, n the dogs barking... Looked out window to investigate...
Saw both of them (<40kg dogs) ROLLING on something... I yelled at them... (prob woke whole street up)... they stopped n moved then I noticed they were rolling on a cat...

I went flying outside down the back terrace/stairs n round the side of the house... gathered the cat up in a towel... it was still alive at that stage... in shock I would imagine... checked it over... no blood... no puncture marks..

I didnt think it would survive at this stage as it was kinda stiff when I picked it up... took it inside... put into a carry cage with the towel... and placed on the steps by front door (dogs cant get to that area) next to food and water dishes with the door to the cage open (Should it want to go home if it was ok... or to go home to die)...

Got up this morning... cat was not in the cage but on the steps, dead....

Has anyone ever heard of something similar to this??...

We have 3 cats at home, and the dogs get on with them fine... they never chase them... have never hurt them... nothing like that... then... this morning... They rolled on a trespassing cat....and the result was that the cat died... I feel really stink... They have never hurt any other animals before... They are not young dogs... (6 & 8)... and have never done anything like it before.....

Why would they roll on it??!?!.... both at the same time?!?...pack mentality? (I Thought they were play fighting with each other till I saw the cat in the middle!)

If a dog wanted to attack a cat... wouldnt they just grab it?!?!...
Maybe they didnt mean to hurt the cat and just wanted to play?? *shrug*...

Now you have the hard task of finding the cat's owner.

Can I suggest you ring up the SPCA or your local vet and ask if they have ever heard of this happening before.... Cos I know that Haven't.

It could well be the 'pack' thing.

But someone out there is going to be missing a cat this morning.....
and they will want to bury this cat.

Maybe do a letter drop in your local area re finding the cat..

Good luck.......

Likely the cat was hit by a car and managed to get to your place before dying. When a dog kills it is usually ripping and shaking (esp with cats) so there'd be injuries if your dogs did it I reckon. The dogs roll on it coz of the smell. Cats have a strong (to dogs) smell.

Had a very old lab with about 2 teeth left in his head - sucked a cat to death once. Came home and found this very dead, very slobbery cat in the driveway.

Maybe the cat was already dieing and ya dogs were doing CPR?

Don't ring the SCPA or try to find the owners. This may just end up backfiring in this dog hating country.

It's perfectly natural for a dog to kill a cat. It's a food chain thing.

Agreed, any cat would go absolutely mental if a strange dog tried to roll on it. Besides which, the noise would have woken the whole neighbourhood if the cat was in good health when it arrived, hissing snarling and carrying on.

I didnt do it... I was out the door on my way to work... left that to the man of the house... I dont know what happened to it... just got told... 'its gone'... so I assume... thats where it went *shrug*...

Added: I tried to save it, I did my part... I didnt get told where it went for a reason... mainly cuz I dont want to know... one of my childhood pets... died... it got buried in the jumbo bin.... (as I found out many years later)... So burying dead pets etc??... not my job... dont wanna know...

my doberman likes cats.
likes picking them up in his foot long mouth an shaking them til something goes click an they stop moving.
then nudging them with his paws wondering why they dont want to play anymore
then goes away licking his wounds, cats scratch.
I try to stop him, but the cat normally ends up attacking me. so i chuck the nasty useless felines back to him an say EAT THE BASTARD

My parents' Cat (Wookie, a female fixed moggie) and Dog (Patches, a Staffie X fixed bitch) were best of mates. Patches was death to possums, but never harmed a cat (we had trianed her that way). Wookie used to boss Patches around.
One week a stray Tom was hanging around and beating on Wookie (who was quite old). That happened for a couple of nights, then one day Patches got hold of the the Tom and broke it's back before we could stop her.
I think of it this way, How do ya feel when someone attacks ya mate? Well this is how Patch felt about Wookie's "Attacker", but she was not living by our Modern rules. She acted on the older "Eye for an eye" one. Still had to punnish her. The Tom, I had to put down.
She still leaves our cats alone and is bossed by them.

I disagree, I'm not fond of cats but I know plenty of people who love them like thier children, if thier cat goes missing they will worry and worry about it maybe put up posters or call the local spca etc. You should find them and let them know that you found it dead. My gf and I found a cat in the gutter on the side of the road so went knocking on all the doors until we found the owners who were very greatful that they were notified.

Nice dogs. The breed explains a lot, they'll kill almost any other animal. Not a good pet if ya like having other animals about.

And FYI you do actually have a legal obligation to either find the owners or notify police/spca.

I agree with that man .... not doing anything would just be taking the easy way out. If the cat wasnt a stray, the owners would be worried. No doubt the dogs "offed" the cat too (before rolling on it).

Yeah, have to agree with this. I would just bury it and move on.
It is plausable that your dogs had nothing to do with its death. It may have been hit by a car and had internal injuries etc. But having a conscience and dobbing yourself in could turn into an ugly nightmare.

as well as a pond outside with 13 turtles.... and 3 big ponds with fish.
Used to have rabbits too... no probs there....
