I was late back from work this afternoon and my 12 year old was home alone for about half an hour. He was playing round on the PC when I got in. he looked kinda guilty about something when I walked in so I asked him what he was doing. he said watching music videos online.
I had a quick look through the history and it shows that he typed "free porn" into google and then surfed quite a few porn websites.
How would you approach this?
I am waiting for his mother to get home.

Hmm luckly my eight year old doesnt even know what porn is.
I wouldnt directly tell him that you found out that he was looking at porn, so you dont embarrass him. I would just bring the subject up casually telling him your thoughts on the matter.... well I think thats what I would do anyway.

As that ad for that merkican sitcom said: "Gimme 5 lil' pimp"
Bring up in a conversation with your wife saying you should regulary check the internet history, making sure he overhears. It might scare him off, or get him to learn to cover his tracks

Approach low and slow..........he? is obviously curious, the media and by virtue of them, his peers make it almost impossible to not have a peek to find out what it is all about. IMHO 12 y/o's are more curious than anything else. A quiet word about what you dont want to find on your computer may hopefully lead to some healthy discussion between you about what is ok and what is not, the good and the bad............just dont over react is my advice.......good luck!

Highhhly unlikely in this damn age
Unless you're raising your kid like my parents raised me. Didn't have a clue what the kids at school were talking about as I had never seen the American Pie movies and shit, and I got teased for it. I still get told I'm too young to hear what people are talking about despite them being virgins and I'm not

Thats a good start let her deal with... oh and at least it was free porn and no credit card involved... ;)
Seriously hes getting to that age where he is starting to get interested and or wanting to know about that stuff... So you need to have to talk to him about it, be open, and answer his questions, and explain the dangers.
Software wise you can look at Net nanny or something similar.
I assume the puter is in the lounge where every one can see, (I don't recommend letting kids have computers in there room especially with internet access)

Oooh. That's a dilemna alright mate. I'd be talking with him in a fairly straight-up, non-punitive way. It's probably worth acknowledging his natural curiosity but letting him know what your family boundaries, and expectation are around porn. Think about what you want. If you have any ideas about what age he can start making his own decisions about this, let him know. If he has questions, let him know that you are willing to answer them for him (if you are). If you have reasons why you don't like him looking at porn, let him know. Chances are though that he will access porn somehow, but the least he can do is smarten up and not get caught.
Good luck.

Here is Professional opinion from someone who knows. Maybe what you should do is manage this situation, this is normal behaviour, the kid has to negotiate his way around what is acceptable and what is not, 12 year old boy's have always looked at Playboy's, today there is far more available. If you as a man have managed your kids effectively he will know what is right or wrong himself, find a way to guide him you have to find the middle ground and learn to talk to him. "If all else fails let his mother deal with it." (That her just being her usual bitch). Right thats the wife"s opinion and take it from me she is the one to listen to . I however would like to know were these sites any good and do they cost much

yeah. I think we will be chatting if his mother ever makes an apperance.
I have never been interested in porn to be honest. I haven't ever seen a porn movie but just kinda think it would be frustrating. A little liken to sitting on your bike with the keys in the igintion watching other people ride. That just me though.

Guess what? Too late!
There are a bunch of parental controls built into IE and Firefox. My kids can't go anywhere I don't let them and it is password controlled and they have their own limited profiles on a shared PC in a public space (the lounge).
Genie's out of the bottle now so you'll have to do the "speech" and discuss limits and start of by establishing a trust relationship with consequences if the trust is broken.

You can have all the protection in place and he will still find a way if you make it a HUGE thing, he will probably still find a way......shit we have all been exposed to porn.........whether you like it or loath it makes no difference...talk to the lad, quietly and dont embarrass him!!!!!!!!!! You young fellas really hate that
If you are really concerned do what I did when mine would not get off the puter when i wanted them too.........password the thing so they cant use it!
They have to ask me if I will log them on......best of all the password for one logon is ......"askmom" go figure that.......LOL

I caught my 11 year old looking at unexceptable content. I talked to him about it. Told him that I knew what he had been looking at (he went bright red) we talked about why its there, and why its adult content, why i didnt like him looking at it, how serious i thought it was, the consequences of him going there again ( he will go cross-eyed and his testicles will grow the size of basktballs and everyone will know..jk) We are an open, very matter-of-factual family. A penis is a penis..not a willy or diddle.
PC in office is now off limits to the kids but still have access to the one in family room. ...I also had issues with the amazing disappearing wine and bourbon. But i think i narrowed that saga down to the 14 year old.
..and can someone tell me this. I believe I have a right to read my daughters (14 yo) txts when i feel like it ...much to her disgust and horror. Where is that line between being a concerned parent and invading privacy? How old before it becomes invasion of privacy?

no point in mentioning it - you've raised him properly and he'll know what's acceptable and what's not without you belabouring the point
....................................
but act immediately
parental control software
limited profile
password protect
(he'll know why without you saying - but if he does come over all innocent and ask, just smile and say 'security']
..........................
yes, he will probably try and access it elsewhere sooner or later but that's pretty normal and there's a strong case for not making it easy for him to do what you'd prefer he didn't do [or didn't do just yet anyway]
as a child i was always permitted free access to whatever i wanted to read ... but the internet has given straightforward bawdiness a deeper, more sinister dimension - perhaps depicting stuff you'd not find in print and which could cause real harm if a curious 8 year old stumbles onto it unaware ........ i'd be erring on the side of caution at the moment.

Kids have more information about so much shit these days that education must start in the home. Parents set moral boundaries and teach kids the rights and wrongs (according to them) If more parents took an active interest in what their kids were doing there'd be a lot less kids in trouble with the law.

I'm with Jim2 on this one. Full controls and supervision on any interweb access for the kids.
No point making their lives unpleasant if you catch them out doing what kids (well, boys) have always done, but they do need protecting. Net pr0n isn't Playboy; I really don't want my son developing an obsession with anal intercourse and facial ejaculations.
And be aware, folks, that you need to set up access control software properly, or your 13-year-old will simply bypass it as soon as you're out of the room. Typically, the default installation doesn't achieve this. Get a tame geek to do it for you if necessary.

Actually, telling him how easy it is to find out exactly where he's been and that he cannot hide his "trails" may be more of a deterrent. I agree, talk to him about how you feel about this and set firm guidelines that you expect to be adhered to.
It may be a good time to sit with him and discuss the subject in general as at 12 he's beginning puberty and his thoughts and feelings are going to be in some turmoil for several years, now. He's probably not going to know whether he's Arthur or Martha, or which way is up at times!

He's perfectly normal ...
Good point, too. Assuring him he's perfectly normal is important and that he's going to be curious about a lot of stuff from now on and will experience a lot of confusion and mixed emotions can open the way for good communication. Our kids knew they could talk to us about anything without judgement which made it easier for them to accept and understand our standards.
Despite what kids say, especially as teenagers, they do respect their parents deep down and need to know they are understood and loved unconditionally. Much of the aggro is hormonal and can be passed over, though not always easy in the heat of the moment.
We did a lot of bushwalking with ours and the fresh air, scenery, (been up Mt. Pirongia?), and exercise was as good as Prozac without the side effects. Lead to a lot of close communication about all sorts of subjects.

Mostly all said in the thread above, but...
Sit down with your kids and explain that they will have free use of the machine (obviously in a public area of the lounge) - BUT you will sit down with them once a fortnight/week and go through the history file with them and then clear the history file.
They need to comprehend that they will need to answer for all of the sites that have been visited.
Also explain that if you find the history file tampered with or cleared, the trust has been broken and access to the internet will be removed/rationed/monitored/etc.
This method can work quite well.

Curiosity level is normal, hiding the behaviour is also normal, the next couple of years should be interesting! Good luck.

No big deal. Give him porn by all means, but there's porn, and then there's porn, and there's a lot of really fucked-up, misogynistic shit on the internet. I, for one, don't want my boy exposed to that point of view until he's old enough to know better.

At least then he wont waste his teenage years worrying about what bitches think of him...
I wish there was a magic pill that'd do that for my boy, but I suspect that that stage is just something we all have to go through. I certainly did, and I don't think anything but time fixed it.
I mean, if we didn't go through those years of fractured self-image and abject, secretive worship of the unattainable pussy, we'd never develop a proper healthy fear and loathing of the female species, now, would we?
And then what would become of human civilisation, eh? Down the fucking gurgler, mate. Down the fucking gurgler.

Add them to your 'Favorites' Saves a lot of time searching .
But seriously, the Net has raised the bar to a different level of porn since the days when every Lad nicked a Playboy from the corner dairy -and yes every lad did do that.

Net pr0n isn't Playboy; I really don't want my son developing an obsession with anal intercourse and facial ejaculations.
It wont nesacarily develop into an obsession, but he needs to know its not warped or odd to want to poke some chick in the ass or blow all over her face. In fact, some quite like the idea.
What will fuck him up is if he thinks hes the only sicko that wants to do it.

13-year-olds aren't old enough to know better.

I'm not saying it's inevitable. I'm saying it's better if 15-year-old boys aren't given the impression that all women harbour a deep desire to take cocks up the arse and swallow ejaculate.
It's not that women aren't mindless sex objects; it's that one gets more action by pretending that they're real human beings who matter.
If anything has fucked me up, it was my parents teaching me "It's ok to cry".

It's only worked once for me so far. Then again most girls my age don't want a man that cares, they really do harbour a deep desire to take cocks up the arse and swallow ejaculate. The rest that aren't are generally ugly and want to hang onto any guy that gives a damn.
And yes, I have wised up. However I don't think I'll be able to shake off the label of 'emo' unless I finally move to Italy and work for Pinanferina.

No, they don't really want cocks up arse and semen down throat. They're just not attracted to you, because you're small and pasty and whingy. Try being large and hairy and gruff instead. Smoke cigars, pump iron, get a fake tan. Wear Brylcreem. Modulate your anger with stoic detachment.

A fake tan seems kinda metrosexual
The real reason they're not attracted to me is the shitty pimples I've had all over my face for the last year. They have gone now since I used a potentially liver killing drug that makes you depressed (and I was depressed enough to begin with) but I still have red dots all over. Maybe I'll start working out once they're gone and I'm not such a lost cause

I feel your pain. Good old Roaccutane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotrex), eh? I was on it for 18 months from age 13. Fucked my head up real good and didn't do much to help the acne, either. My shoulders are still scarred as hell. Looks like I took multiple shotgun blasts to the top of my back. Face is pretty good after more than a decade of healing, though.
I found that topical application of the same drug worked much better - ask your doc for an Isotrex prescription. I didn't get onto the gel until the bad years were almost over, unfortunately.
Maybe I'll start working out once they're gone and I'm not such a lost cause
The same level of testosterone that causes your sebacious glands to go haywire will give you training gains equivalent to those experienced by 20-somethings on exogenous anabolic steroids - at this point in time, you have a similar endocrine balance, which is why Accutane and Isotrex are commonly sold alongside stanozolol and Sustanon by online juice vendors working out of eastern Europe and South America.
Hit that gym, dude, and start stuffing your face with tuna and whey powder. It'll change your life.

Roaccutane worked for me. Although it required a blood test before and after. This stopped me from using it for a while cause I have some deep seeded primal fear of needles that brings out mainly the fight mechanism, but after a few months of putting it off my parents forced me into it. Since I left it a few months I have a few scars which isn't self esteem boosting in the least. Plus my face is still red and is fading very slowly
Well I'll have to see about a gym membership. Apparently it's like 50 to join, 15 a week there on, I can afford that

Roaccutane was partially successful in my case. Marvellous stuff for cystic acne but completely ineffective on the hidradenitis suppurativa -- that needed something considerably more drastic to ameliorate.
I am constantly amused by people who think that because they've got a couple of zits their life is over. If only the wee dears knew that there are folks for whom skin lesions can be 1,000 times worse.

After the usual lectures about putting details into sites, which were ignored, he sent him anonymous messages outlining how he knew who he was, where he lived, what sport he played and where, what school he went to, his age etc etc... made out he was a gay man looking for young love... scared the shite out of him, never done it since.

instead of being a loner or hiding in the libarary find like minded ppl & talk bikes .. meeting 1 person will turn into meeting half a doz ..

Your boy told a lie to protect himself from possible fallout. Natural reaction when you are in the brown stuff.
You have dealt with it well. Tell him you will be checking the History and that deleted History means only one thing.
I suggest there is a negative consequence for his actions and lying to you. Banned from the Internet for 2 weeks & computer games. That type of crap.
You got the issue out in the open and handled in it a mature way.
Clearly you are a good caring parent. I am sure the lad wants to keep your respect and is unlikely to reoffend in the near future. Cheers

Simple, send him to a Tibetan Monestary or apologise to him.

It's your fault dude.

porn addiction
Porn addiction? Pig's arse. Might as well accuse a guy of being 'addicted' to dihydrogen monoxide.
With most women being the way they are, porn is just one of those little necessities of life.
Take that thought away with you, girls, and consider - are you putting out often enough for your man?

This is so yesterday! (http://www.ffeusa.org/html/statements/statements_pornography.html)
Q: Are you suffering from any perversions?
A: G-d forbid! I am enjoying them!

Hmmm - the sad thing is, we find it acceptable to view, even on public television, "shock & awe' video, helicopter gunships 'taking out' some poor bastard ...ad nausea, but if we so much as glimpse people enjoying themselves, the big Christian finger wags away.
I wonder if the lad had been observed playing some kill'm quick video game would our/your response have been so concerned? Probably not.
Remember, disgusting and perverted as it may seem, some of our most pious people started life as ... a damned good shag! (truly).

All hail MRHANDS.WMV (http://silenceisdefeat.org/~limepi/mr/mrhands.wmv).
Personally, I enjoy using the innernuh to sneak up behind people, stab them in the neck, and then gloat about it in public.
Virtually speaking.
[NB: Don't click on the link. Really. No, I mean it. If you do, I wash my hands of any psychological consequences.]

Hay everyone im new to this forum and noticed the mention of hidradenitis suppurativa which i have, how did you manage to get rid of it surgery?

Yes. Excision of the offending tissue, removing the underlying fat layer and then skin grafts. Both armpits and groin. It sounds brutal, but it's the only real and effective solution. You can only get surgery of this magnitude undertaken through the public health sector, due to the weeks of specialist nursing care you will need for your recovery. That, unfortunately, means waiting lists.
I understand completely what you are going through with HS. I'm happy to discuss anything you want offline. Please send me a PM.

Hans,
Not being black and white at all :spudwhat:
Not all porn addicts are confused mysogynists, but some may be.
The latter is not the kinda behaviour you would want in your kids...thats all.
Generalising to the whole population of porn addicts would be a presumption
considering some women may have the problem too!
