Hi all,
Ok so I finished my BHS the other day and got my L plate. I live close to the hospital and was wondering the best places to ride around the area? The instructor at my BHS said to not ride on the road at first and walk my bike to a parking lot. This is a bit tough in my area though.
Thoughts?

domain is nice. can go for an endless cruise round and round till you get your confidence up.
techincally still against the law though as its a public road. but meh.

is perfect. It's where I took my GN when I first got it. I lived in Newmarket. People drive slow and few hills for the hill starts. Enjoy..

Oh I had the wrong impression, I thought I could drive almost anywhere provided I stay under 70 k's

No, sounds like you're right - if you have your learners licence then you can ride on the road under 70kph (plus various other restrictions)....... Did you actually get a licence or did you just complete the course (or do i not know wtf i'm talking about)?
Pick a quiet time (maybe early morning) so there isn't much traffic about. And congrats! :wari:

Sounds like you just need to complete the theory part - you can probably do this with the AA then you are set. Give them a bell and find out what you need to take with you

I personally just got used to the suburbs first, keeping off main roads etc and getting used to light traffic. Just build it up and think ahead what places you'll end up so you don't get yourself too out of depth too early. I recommend very regular practice, especially slow speed skills - something I didn't do which I should have done from day 1.

Go and sit your scratchy test at AA and then you are legal to ride the bike on the roads.

sorry I was a bit confusing, I have done my BHS and have finished the theory so I am now operating on a Learners license.
Will try the domain when traffic lessens....

Then you are legal to ride out there on the roads..
You dont have to push your bike to a park.
Is there any quiet street near where you live to go out there to ride on...

Yeah the street my house is on sees little traffic, which is the extent of my range so far. Just looking for ideas around in the near future. Domain sounds good.
Going to practice some hill starts this afternoon when i get home from work

Domain is fun and a great road for the rookie and vet, some awesome turns on it :D

There's a road running through the domain from stanley st up to the museum.
It has a 30k speed limit and is nice and windy.
I took a practice ride through there one day, came round a corner and encountered a red FTO doing about 80k on my side of the road as he cut teh corner.
Nearly shat myself :eek5: :shit: :bye:
But luckily he got back over in time.
Suffice to say, not everyone drives slow through there

Two Wheels just gets better everyday.
Also look down at Club 250 forum where we are always organising learner freindly rides through the countryside on weekends. Thats how I improved was on those rides around like minded people and away from cager infested streets.

I live not far from you Krd/ponsonby rd and had similar problems when I first started in January. I just kept close to home, round ponsonby, grey lynn etc until you get the hang of the clutch, throttle and braking etc. The park is a great place to cruise through, but watch out for those speed bumps, dogs and pedestrians that dont look before they walk out in front of traffic. If you are after a parking lot, use the one at the back of the medical school after everyone has left for the day - bout 18:30 or so it clears out.
Probably see you on the road neighbour

Lteejay,
Thanks for that, i'll check out the parking lot tomorrow. Seeing as it's both myself and my wife riding, its been alot of fun just bombing up and down the local streets comparing notes. If anyone is ever in the area one night yell out, we could use any pointers... :)
