right so today while at work i stupidly managed to chip a piece about the size of my lil finger nail off my wisdom tooth..... so off to the detist i went....now a few months ago i was in there getting a clean and he recond my wisdom teeth were sweet and nothing to worry about...now this!!!! so now of course i have to have this one out and might as well get the other one out at the same time....

everyone at work keeps telling me horror stories about having these teeth pulled...just wondering what stories you lot out in KB land have about getting yours out? cost? pain? shit goin wrong? stuff like that....

ps:worst thing about it is at the momment it hurts to where a helmet

Ok firstly..... How did you manage to chip your wisdom tooth....? Depending how you did it it could have been ACC worthy......

Managed to crack half of one of my front teeth off when I decided to faceplant a dashboard... Have it capped now... And all covered by ACC for any future problems with it...

In the long run.... Just get the damn thing pulled... One expense... Saves alot more in futrue....

I can tell you a horror story with one of mine. The dentist took two hours to get it out, he almost had his boot in my mouth and he had to smash it in the end. The local was wearing off too!!! He also slipped with the pliers and cut the lower part of my gum - more stitches!!!! Then I spent the next 24 hours bleeding like a stuck pig. Not nice!!!

Mine were sweet! Yeah sure I was a bit tender for a couple of days but they came right pretty quick. The most painful part was paying for them. All it took was a bit of sedative and sleepy sleepy then presto! Mouth full of gauze... all good after a couple of days...

i thought about the acc thing but the dentist recons he will pull it for about 120 to 160 bucks so not sure if its worth the hassle goin threw acc......but then again he did say he was only 90% sure he could pull it out...what about the other 10 %

I went tried to book into local dentist to have wisdom extracted, but there was a 6 week wait. I went to next to Tauranga Accident & Healthcare clinic (2nd ave) and they had the buggers out the same day. $400 to have tooth extracted at short notice in Taupo (not me) but cost $240 to get my two wisdom out in Tauranga short notice. Both my wisdom had nasty long hooks and they were dug out of the gum. There wasnt actually anything wrong with them, they just did what wisdoms tend to do and they never made it out properly to start with. I took a few extra shots of the numbie stuff more then norm' to keep them quite. The dentists here will make you wait 6 weeks even if your in pain. I will not be using them again. I recommend the place I went to. There was nothing I could fault. People were nice, price was good, process was quick, and they booked me in the same day :)

I think with ACC you have to file the claim asap.... With mine its saved me a fair bit... Considering I have to go back and get my tooth re-capped once in a while....

Just pay the $120-160 and get it done and done with..... Will hurt for a while.. But least you'll be able to drink hot/cold drinks and not cringe (if the nerves showing)

Believe me if the nerve shows it hurts for a long long time.... (almost 2 years for mine) Get the problem sorted now...

Goodluck...

P.S Keep yah tooth, you never know the tooth fairy might pay you a visit!!!!!

O and for the pain Johnny, Cloves, those twiggy flowery looking things. You can get them from the herb section in your supermarket. I shit you not when I tell you that they make for a great local anesthetic for a sore tooth. Just bite down on it, it tastes like shit, but does the job. I think you can get clove oil too. It really is very good and very instant releif

I can relate to that. I had an impacted lower wisdom tooth (basically, it had hit the bone at the rightangle at the back of my jaw and had turned 45 degrees to grow backwards deeper into the jaw). The top partner tooth was a doddle, but the lower one took nigh-on 2.5 hours. Finally access was gained by chiselling away a large area of bone around the tooth.
I was glad it was a groundfloor surgery cos I'd ridden my bike there, but no way was I in any state to ride home (bike was parked up in the foyer overnight).
It was about 1989 and I think cost $200

I had my tooth pulled out last week, as long as you have a decent dentist it shouldnt hurt a bit, just lots of pulling what actually gets really tiring after a while... why dont you just get a rather large filling? or are u going to get a fake tooth?

the noise is the worst part of getting your teeth pulled. there is a lot of grinding and snapping going on but you cant really feel pain just a lot of pulling

one of mine didnt come out so i had to book in with another dentist where i could get put to sleep while they cut it out. was in complete agony the next few days and went back - it was because she had disturbed the root while trying to pull it out - it was the worst pain i have ever had. but once it was cut out when i was out to it was sweet - never even realised they had done it when i woke up

yeah he did.....it was just a few months ago i was in there having a check up and he told me my wisdom teeth were fine and not to worry about having them out now one has started to crumble away and he recons i need to have them out.....thought the xrays would have told him that a few months ago.

It is easy! You just lie back in the chair, relax and let the dentist do his job. No anaesthetic necessary, local or general...well, thats how I had mine out anyway.
Take Arnica tablets or drops for the next few days to help with the bruising/swelling. You'll be sweet.

Go see a oral surgeon. I seriously regret having all four of my wisdom teeth extracted, because I would love to do it again.

You see, the oral surgeon I saw uses a valium injection to put you to sleep. I woke up afterwards, floated at to the car (nurse and mate were helping me), then home to sit in front of the telly dribbling like a loon.

Obviously oral surgeons cost more, but if you have insurance or don't mind spending a few extra coin then they are the way to go......

I had all 4 removed at the same time (all were impacted too and req gum to be cut and stitched back together once they were out.)

I had a GA and was knocked out for the whole thing. When I came to I was being offered Jelly by some nurses  :innocent: lol...

I think the price was around $2,500. (Medical Insurance/Health Insurance people paid for it tho)....

Do you have southern cross or anything like that??
IF so... go for a GA, get put to sleep... have them all taken out... :)

You'll be a lil sore for a couple of days, just take whatever drugs they give you n you'll be right

:Punk: They rock aye... haha... Its a crazy feeling when you get knocked out that way. When I was younger I also had 6 teeth surgically removed before I got braces (not wisdom ones) cuz my mouth too small for all them there teeth lol...

When I came out from that one, my mother was moving the car closer, I had just come to n was being helped to walk, I saw her out the window in the car n thought she was leaving without me... I told the nurse 'I can walk by myself'.... stumbled over to the window tried to get out of it (2nd floor), found myself being helped back to a chair while we waited for mum to come back in and get me.

On the drive home... I had my mouth packed with cotton ball thingies still to deal with the bleeding... and for some reason... the national anthem was on the radio... I still get shit for it to this day!! 'God of nations at thy feet...' singing like a drunken drugged up something a rather... with blood spitting out of my mouth n dribbling down chin.... :first:

Getting it ripped out at that price is very good. I can't stand injections either but they can give you a pill half an hour before hand and you don't notice the injection. Usually they have to give me gas first the inject - cos I see that needle coming and I hyperventilate.

Dentists have come along way now. I did have an oral surgeon pull a bit of a tooth out which had been crowned - where the post had snapped off way up in my gum. I was knocked out for it - woke and taken home - absolutely no pain whatsoever - I could not believe it.

Good luck

I had mine extracted in USA so can't comment on local prices. I opted for a full anesthesia and loved every moment of it. I am still struggling to understand how after the drug was administered everything in front of me started sliding down and yet remaining in place at the same time. There was no gap or feeling of blacking out whatsoever - the assistant put a piece of plastic in my mouth and asked to clamp it with my teeth, then pulled it out. Then she told me - "we are all done". Surprisingly enough there was no pain whatsoever - I haven't used a single painkiller pill they gave me, yet there was so much discomfort that I'd almost rather prefer pain.

Jumping right in (i.e. not bothering to read the posts...)

Wisdom teeth... I got all 3 (only had 3) done at once. Can't recall the price, but no horror stories.

Injected up, numb, teeth pulled (not too obnoxious either... ), sore for a few days, a bit of blood in the mouth for a few days... then done.

Or put another way - wish I'd done it sooner, and would do it tomorrow if I had to.

Go for it, do them all at once.

yup,

I had all four out, no problems, minimal pain, minimal blood, wish i had it done sooner. Don't listen to all the namby pambys with their horror stories. If you leave it long, it hurts a whole lot less to get em out than to leave em in.
