Well lately I have noticed a few two stroke 250 bikes on Trade Me, I don't think I've ever seen so many on sale for the last year or so.

Here's the list, say if you had to buy one which one would it be and why? Tell me what your picks are and why you would go for that one? The nice RGV 96 VJ 23 isn't on at the moment so here's the ones which are:

Aprilia RS 250's :

One (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=79642386)
Two (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=89232090)
Three (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=89224945)
Four (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=88810872)

Honda NSR MC 28 :

One (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=88840205)

Yamaha TZR 250 :

One (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=88705134)

Where would your money be at guys, oh I must add I've never seen a TZR in such nic condition, good on you owner!!

Mine would be an RS250. Cept I already own the best two stroke ever made..............

I'd go the RS too, but 2 of those 03 models with around 1000km havent really been ridden and would wonder what condition it is in from not having a whole heap of use.

Not an expert on 2 strokes but they are higher maintenance and would think using them would also help.

I'd buy this one, an MZ 250 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=87978063), from East Germany when it was still communist.
Cool!
Madkeenandy will apparently be racing an MZ 250 in the BEARs "Sound of Thunder" meeting this weekend

the cheaper of the Prilla's.
but im still a fan of the 98 rs250 of them - especially the one with all the carbon.

I think the yammy.. owned RD250 - 350 - 400 over the years and they were great bikes.

Not sure two strokes are higher maintainence than 4 strokes. Proabably true on the old two-stroke oils, but the new synthetic oils don't seem to carbon up as much.

No oil changes to do - no oil filters - no valve clearances - b ike is always running fresh oil. Hmm I better go out and buy one !

Ooooh, thats a really hard one... I'd go the Yammie, just coz. But the 'prillas are well nice... i've already got 3 strokers that don't go!

Stoppit! you'll have me bidding soon.

Ahh, why did they never make a TZR400 to replace the RZ350. Note the missing question mark.

this is the 2 stroke I'd be going for.

2 strokes were starting to be abandoned. At the time Yamaha were messing round with 20v engines and exup exhaust valves. So they dissowned all 2 strokes cept for 250's, 500's etc
Stupid EU standards or something

F5 Dave
23rd February 2007, 10:11
Yeah rhetorical question sadly. I'd been in the line to buy one, esp if they kept the drum style powervalve.

I'm lucky I'm out of money. I'd be buying the Yammy and asking CM2005 how much for one of his KR's...

F5 Dave
23rd February 2007, 10:45
With enough money I'd be asking KR (THE KR) how much for one of his KRs. Saw one at the Auss GP trade show & even though they were getting trounced by the V4 500s it was still an unbelievably sexy bit of kit.

Make an all right roadbike, add some lights, heated grips, packrack, topbox, just the essentials.

Come on now guys whats with the answers like my pick would be RS it looks better dooh 10 year olds will surely differentiate that.

Now my question is of the 4 RS 250 which one would you go for and why? :p

F5 Dave
23rd February 2007, 11:42
Of the 4 I'd pick the Yamaha.

. . . Sorry I'm not 10 yrs old.

F5 Dave
23rd February 2007, 11:49
The problem with the Aprilias is they have the hand grenade RGV engine in them that shag out pretty much everything, power valves, pistons, barrels, cranks, gearboxes.

Whereas the Yams crack barrels in no time at all preserving the rest of the engine from further wear.

. . .Um:mellow:

23rd February 2007, 11:51
Yeah, I'd go for the Yamaha too. Those TZRs don't seem to pop up very often. I'm sorry, but I'm not very keen on the RS250 styling. It's too OTT. And let's face it, it's a Suzuki engine, with all the associations that incurs.

However that's not to disrespect those RSs -- I would want of those far more than a GSXR or summat like that. If you could make some custom fairings up for one, it would be the sharpest little bike.

rs 250 are production hardcore,

tzr250 and nsr250 are now rare collectors item, that won many races and have there nam,e as worlds best 2 strokes, i love the 97-98 rs250, but the new ones
look like the new cars of 2006-2007, = PHUNKY!!!!

honestly man if u want prestiege go with the nsr or tzr,
if u just want a aprillia, so u can say, *hey baby u heard of aprillia?*
or, yeh i ride a italian motorbike, go witht he rs250,

end of the day ur choice bro, there all great bikes,

Yep, me too - once I get something, it's a keeper for me!

"Ooh, lookit all those bikes mounted on the wall!"
"Yes, it be me happy huntin' ground for bikes that I've biffed over banks, chuck down the dales, looped it over the hills and ridden to the death!"
"So...why so many bikes outside then?"
"Ah, now laddy, those be my bikes that I will be intending to biff over banks, chuck down the dales and looping it over hills and to be ridden to the death!"
"Sir...you are certifiable..."
"Been meaning to get off my learner's for the past 20 years too, lad."
"......"

And yes, I hope to be having that conversation one day! :innocent:

They are faster because? Don't they have the same engine? Can't the MC28 be derestricted?

I have a VFR400 swingarm with the wheel waiting in the garage for a worthy bike to fuse it onto. Suppose an MC21 would be a cool project bike. Get the TYGA 300cc kit and everything

Ok and here is another beautiful MC 21 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=89248664&key=170303) now does anyone have a good weblink on detailed information about how two stroke engine works with perhaps some animated pictures.

I've read through howstuffworks (http://www.howstuffworks.com)very good website, but if anyone has good website links worth a look chuck it here please. Adios!

I'd love to see some too, it makes everything much clearer to see it working in an animation. Please anybody got some links?

I love these old 250s and even owned a couple of them but just remember that they're now getting very old. Parts are either hard to get or about to be hard to get. A lot of them will have had the stuffing caned out of them too. Go into it with your eyes open and don't make the mistake of falling in love with one (unless you truely want a classic/restoration project). NSR would be my pick followed by the TZR. I'd give the RGV and KR1 a wide berth.

Alright Steamy fella I'll spoon feed you even after giving you the link :p here's an example hope it does help :D

The wonderful two stroke cycle (http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke2.htm), thoroughly explains the revolution difference between two and four strokes. Firing spark on every stroke as opposed to every second stroke on the four stroke engines. Valves no vales.

And the four stroker (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine1.htm) explained here. Hope that helps ;)

England and Germany got the derestricted models (though most of the UK ones now are grey imports and thus restricted)

Dunno where you cna get a full power box (and if I did I'd buy it myself, nah-nah-nah)

RZ350 is a good two stroke, I have one, smooth and powerful and reliable to boot!

Another good 2 stroke is the KR250S, it's filled with 80's goodness like 16" front, and 18" back wheel combination, and the S model has power valves so it's not too bad low down. Fairly unreliable though, look great though and go pretty hard.
