It's just the Herald glorifying news as per usual. I like the bit about 1200 kids killed or injured over the past 5 years. What a load of shit.

In the last five years over 1200 child pedestrians have been killed or injured during school terms.

Is this just on the roads outside schools, or altogether, including diseases and everything?
Twenty a month seems like an awful lot of people to be knocked down by cars outside schools.

In the five years from 2001 to 2005, a total of 1,524 pedestrians and cyclists between the ages of five and 14 were injured on our roads during school terms and a further 24 were killed.

from ltsa website. this is all injuries and deaths of school-aged children between 7 & 9am and 3 & 5pm during school times - not school holidays. it does not differentiate between pedestrians or car pax.

So.. it does include children admitted to hospital to have grazed knees cleaned up then?

Doesn't note the circumstances in any detail. The road crossing person or teacher interviewed said she couldn't see the police approaching because of a corner, maybe the crossing is in the wrong place. I don't know the area though so can't say for sure.

The rider could have been going the speed limit and come round the corner before the crossing with no room to stop and therefore had the choice of weaving between the signs or crashing into them. Or the signs could have been swung out without leaving room for the rider to stop. At some school crossings the signs are manned by 10-11 year old kids who do not know about needing room to slow down and so they just swing out the signs expecting everyone to stop immediately. Of course the rider could just be an ass.

Just trying to point out there might be more to the story.

Yeah sometimes injury is used to describe little things. In the UK windsurfing is considered an extreme sport because 70% of windsurfers get injured. Their definition of unjured includes sunburn.

You would be surprised at cars weaving through those hugeassed patrol signs. There is at least 3 a week here. Generally it is though because they haven't seen the signs go out even though they have had enough notice and obviously they werent concentrating. The local police officer was standing by our patrol last week and caught 20 speeders - thats them doing more than 55kms through a school crossing. It's State Highway 2 admittedly but some of those cars scream by.....glad it's changing because I hate standing out there and one day - there is going to be a kiddy knocked over.

My daughter's starting at that school in three months' time.

It's a funny wee bit of road. A 50kph zone as you go past the airbase in the middle of an open-road-ish 80, with a school attached. Easy to blast straight through the lot at > 100 if you're not paying attention.

Perhaps Patched-Up Harley Dude wasn't paying attention.

Personally, I wish I'd gone to a primary school next to an Air Force base. Lunchtimes would have been way more awesome.

Had to make his "P" delivery or purchase... damn cops wanting to see his disqualified licence too no doubt...

What an arsehole. VERY surprised the biker cop or the chopper didn't catch him... obviously had something to hide............
