View Full Version : Best ISP?

Im wondering which ISP you guys use and how good they are price wise and the amount of data you are allowed.

Im currently with IHUG and pay $60 a month for unlimited data but......you can only use 500mb every 3 days or they will cut your download rate by half so this means I can hardly download a thing which means the uncapped data ends up becoming quite pointless.
So Im after something around 30-50GB per month with no retarded 500mb cap on it.

Suggestions??

i'd say actrix. But then i work for them :)

no traffic shaping here. plans are based on daily limits before you get slow down. 1.4GB a day ~ 42GB a month, but you'll see more than that.

im with orcon, get niceish speeds and no (or not as much) traffic shaping and no caps/limits - $70/month for max/max 15gbs

plus they've been the first to announce adsl2+ and vdsl2+ so there is no way (or need to) im changing isps

I'm on Telstra's PDQ plan (http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/homeplan/internet/pdq/?CFID=34610980&CFTOKEN=71087749). Pay for the speed you want then pay $3 for each gig you use, or buy 10 gig up front for $12

i've not had any probs with it..

Normally recommend Orcon or Actrix to my customers. Mostly due to the quality of service and helpdesk. If you're calling mobiles, abroad or outside the local area a lot then you must take into account is the toll call costs. The differences between the ISP's is staggering.

Orcon are pretty good.. I was with them before I switched to xtras go leech plan (which yes its speeds suck, but I still average 80-100gb on it even though they throttle the shit out of it)

I want max up and down, with no throttling , and no data cap for under NZD$50 a month :-(

I think i'm gonna be waiting awhile yet.

im with Orcon...
can download as much as you want, when you want...
they have some good plan options too

lots of techies here... so you will get differing opinions like always...

I'll chuck my vote in for Orcon, they are not just about home dsl plans... but I suppose thats all you need. Start getting into the Max/Max Line speed plans, and Orcon is going to be roughly $20 cheaper a month, for the comparable stuff of Xtra. Their new way of being able to completely make up your own plan is quite handy too.

Standard practise of static IP's is useful if you require it, help desk is good (even better when you have an account manager and can ring corporate support  )

If you are comparing plans, just make sure you're including or excluding tolls. Orcon is upfront on their plans page, Xtra for example has a little asterisk stating it assumes you have tolls with them etc.

30-50GB? Shit, how many movies do you find time to watch?

Yeh I'm on the Go Large... it's not about speed, it's about caps, and I like the fact that I can download whatever I like and not worry about busting caps, it may take twice as long to download something, but to get a full speed plan that lets me download the 60-70Gb that I do every month would be more expensive than what I pay now.

Thats only 6-10 movies..

I've never understood why people still download DIVX movies lol.. DVD5 images for the win!

Sorry to 'necro' an old thread, but it seems like a sensible place to post...

Anyone here have experience with Kiwilink naked DSL?

We need naked DSL at home, as we don't have a phone line and are unwilling to have anything to do with Telescum.

AFAIK, Kiwilink are currently the only naked DSL plans around (for now...)

Any input appreciated.

PS we're in the Waitakere ranges, so woosh et al are not options.

Ross.

Anyway I use NZ wireless and pretty happy!

Because i can guarantee that it only goes down when the national grid does. All the other ISP's i have used were just renting Xtra's lines. So telecom dicks with them all the time.
Telecom are a bunch of assholes, but unfortunately a big bunch of assholes.

Free plug for my mates in Digital Island comms........ they have good internets

I thought all DSL over the copper network were through Telecom, naked or not.Being in Laingholm might restrict you a bit as to availibility and speed.Naked DSL may present its own problems because its still being rolled out and techs don't know it's a working circuit since there's no dial tone.

Ditto I switched to Xnet recently after finally loosing my rag with the shittyness that was Xtra Go large and am loving it. As soon as I can afford a new router that has VOIP ports I'm going naked.

I am with Slingshot, am quite happy with their plan although the alloted 6GB just does not seem enough for me now...(remember the good old days where an average HardDrive was less than 1GB)
$40 gets me my max D/L speed and 256K upload & 6GB data...but I sometimes buy another 25GB of data(depends how much Sci Fi I want to download).

nz tinternet just sucks arse. so fucking sick of it.
I refuse to give Telescum any of my hard earned cents, so I am trying Woosh. And while it's not giving 'them' anything, it's not really giving me much either. Capping at 1.6mps, can't even stream youtube stuff. it's getting bloody annoying. But I'm not paying an extra 50 bucks a month for a phone I'm never going to use.

in the US and UK, you cannot get dialup plans. The slowest plan I found (browsing) in the US, is 10m/s which was something like $10.. ffs.. hate monopolizing companies and retarded governments that don't know/do shit.

You can say that again. I've just moved back from Tokyo where internet plans mostly start at 8Mbps and go up to 100Mbps fibre-optic lines, for around NZ$45/month. It is fast fast fast, and as far as I know there have never been caps of any type whatsoever. The connection NEVER drops out.

It has been like that for the last 4 years or so now, I guess it's just due to healthy competition for customers. At one point you could go down the street and find them handing out broadband modems, then go around the corner and find another company doing the same thing.

I think NZers are being shafted.

Im with woosh. There customer service is a little on the slack side but the internet is always available and fast enough for me. I got a sweet deal of them and I have no complaints especially @ $29.95 month. Means I dont have to have a landline and Telescum dont get my $$......

True that the broadband available down here is quite appaling... But it all stems from the fact that Telecom owns the bloody net - they have a goverment backed monopoly on the existing telecommunications net and until that atrocity is taken care of I'm sure nothing will change in a hurry.

BUT - the real fucking annoyance is that the infrastructure is so crappy that we apparently can't get broadband at our house because there aren't any free ports at the local exchange.

iHug (Vodafone) and Orcon are both currently in the process of putting their own equipment (local loop unbundling) into Telecom's exchanges which, when complete, will give their customers VDSL or ADSL 2+ (depending on your distance from your local exchange) connection speeds.

They are both currently testing in the Ponsonby and Glenfield exchanges.

And yes, I know it doesn't work that way unless you get someone to hold your breath for you.

I was on Telecom GoLarge plan and switched to Ihug's latest deal, I pay $20 for 20GB per month, I'd prefer a bigger limit but its cheap enough, doesnt cost extra if you go over your limit just lose speed. Torrents can kill it, so pays to be careful and try and manage downloads as closely as possible. I pay about $76 a month for my landline @ $36, $20 for unlimited tolls and $20 internet.

2 significant differences between Tokyo and NZ spring to mind.

The population lives much closer together - you don't have to dig up so much road to serve the same number of people. Digging up roads is expensive.

The Japanese presumably mostly speak Japanese, and want content predominantly in Japanese ... which is predominantly located in Japan. Hence they don't need to spend such a high proportion of their money on expensive undersea cables and satellite links.

That's not to say Telecom aren't ripping us off.

sounds like a telecom go large plan of sorts

i have telstra clear and pay 30 a month and pay an additional 2.95 per gb
all at full speed
so if i used say 5 gb in a day itll cost 15 dollars

but we use about 3gb a month

Yea the struggle with international traffic is understandable (Cut cables anyone).(not to say they aren't ripping us off.)
But they dont encourage local traffic, which increases international traffic. This is not understandable.
I recall that this site is run overseas because its cheaper. While most of the users of this site are from NZ. This causes more unneccecary international traffic.

Maybe increased local traffic would just move the point of lag to somewhere less excusable than the middle of the ocean.
Anyone have any stats about our wee cable to america.

Anyway back on topic, im with telecoms go large. Its not good. Most of the day i get <20kBps but it usualy gets >200kBps by 3am. So i still pull ~50GB a month if theres good sci-fi.

just joined up with xnet, really painless compared with my last connection that was with slingshot. Really fast connection time also. It took 3 days from the time of the phone call saying I want a conection to surfing the net with xnet, compared with 3weeks with slingshot.

Must say also we here in NZ must be at least 5yrs behind the rest of the developed world in terms of internet connections. I came back from Sweden at the begining of 2003 and I still can't a net connection now in NZ that is as good as what I was getting over there in 2003. No silly data caps over there also.

my 2 cents worth.

Looks like you can use 2gb per day and a maximum of 20gb per month. If you use over 2gb in a day they will squeeze you down to 64k for the whole next day.

Tehy call if the 'fair use' plan now
