preloved tyres

Theres a few people hocking off preloved tyres out there, where they may have had a bit of racing through em. Plenty of tread on them, but whats the rbber quality like after a bit of thrashing? Anyone tried these? Mine are naffed and I'm skint so trying to get something to tide me over till the $$$ pour in (coupla months).

I know there's the answers i'd prob give someone: dont bloody trust em, but has anyone out there actually given them a go or have an educated opinion on them?

Spose the other qustion is if anyone knows of some swish deals on new ones at the mo?

I'd rather spring for a set of cheap Shinko's over a used race tyre. Factor in fitting charges if you don't plan on doing it yourself with 2nd hand ones, suddenly they don't look so cheap.

its all relative i guess--you can get a set of ex race tyres fully scrubbed tom the edges for a couple of hundy--they are USED tyres but they have usually been used properly.Bang for buck for a commuter/occasional scratcher I think ya cant beat em

I used a set of Rennsports that I got off of trademe. They were ex race tyres, worked a treat. Didn't give me any shit at all. Just was careful to warm them up.

I have a Shinko 005 on the rear of the GSXR and it works just fine. You can probably pick one up for around $200.00 but beware of the tyre nazis.

Ex race tyres are fine, while they have been thrashed they generally only go through 1 or 2 heat cycles (so the rubber hasnt gone off) and they still have plenty of tread left. The reason we sell them is because, when pushing a tyre to its limits it does reach a point where the grip is not as good (rears are usually 40 laps, fronts 60 odd)... Whilst we could keep using them at track days, there is no real point, the bike wont be gripping as much, and you cant sell them because they have no tread.

These tyres are the stickiest tyre you can buy, hence why they are used for racing. As long as you are carefull in the wet and heat them up, they wont bite back. These tyres retail at over $700 for a set (the new diablo supercorsa is $700rrp just for the rear!!!) so you are getting a bargin, and you also get to help out a poor struggling racer...

Two Smoker has pretty much covered it. The Major reason the racers don't continue racing on these tyres is that they're no longer at their optimum for extended hard riding at maximum lean angles.
They're usually relatively new in the middle, and because they're designed to be sticky, they're still ok on the sides for spirited road riding.

Why not try a set and see how you like them. If you're in need of new tyres anyway, then what's the harm?

Nice one guys, its pretty much what I had assumed but good to get it fromt he horses. As it stands I um...came into some money...so I've gone for pilot road rear and pilot power front mainly due to the bike being my daily commuter to and from work and then wherever I can get in the weekends.

I now know though so will definately be supporting the "poor struggling racers" in the future wherever I can.

I bought the front tyre I'm currently running of LooseBruce (RIP)... and I bought in confidence off him because he was a straight up guy. If the tyre was damaged at all I'm sure he would have said.

Most tyres are going to be ok. Some are not... it's a small risk - but it carries a big potential i.e. that cheap front tyre blows out at open road speeds... remind me again how this thing's a bargain?

If you can buy in confidence then yes, do it.

If not - don't.

edit- as FROSTY pointed out, race tyres are GREAT for commuting... they're worn on the side, nd not in the middle. The perfect tyre for commuting - which typically wears them in the middle... not on the sides.
