New V8 Venue Suggested

Whenuapai Air Base is being suggested as the venue for Auckland's V8 Supercar race, following concerns raised by the commissioners hearing a resource consent application.

Applicants Auckland City Council and event manager IMG have agreed to revisit issues including traffic, noise and possible losses to businesses.

North Shore council candidate David Thornton says the hitch opens the option for other venues to be used and he believes Whenuapai would be ideal.

He says it would relieve pressure on central Auckland by solving motorway traffic problems and making use of a new motorway which will go right past the airport.

Mr Thornton says allowing organisers time to produce more evidence is a victory for commonsense.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the idea of a street race :spudwhat:

I've got a couple of mates who work on one of the V8 teams and after the last shambles at Puke' it's a pretty good bet that they won't be back there.
No fault of the organisers but the bad weather really showed up the track's bad points. Some serious work both on the track and on convincing the teams and organisers would be needed before we would see them back there again.

I agree that a good alternative would be for a permanant track to be built somewhere. Motorsport in general would benefit long term and hopefully everyone would be happy.

The bad weather has been showing up that shitholes bad points for ages,but it's only when the V8 show up it seems to become an issue,the track has needed serious work for years,but nothing has ever been done.

Umm, arent they coming back again next year. It was the AVESCO dumbasses that changed the date to april (one of the wetter months) from november that caused it to be a shambles. Ironic how the reason they changed it (cause of the china round proposed for november) didnt ever go ahead. I guess thats what happens when you leave a bunch of auzzies in control of it.
