I have received quite a bit of interest in organising a memorial park bench in remembrance of Uncle B.
I need to know roughly how many people would be interested in contributing to this.
I have rung Hutt City Council and we can have it in Avalon Park if we want(Duck/Elephant pond) and once I have the proposal map sent to me, we can decide where we want it (first thoughts are near the car park, where we can sit on it). It was also suggested that the back rest of the seat be engraved with whatever tribute we want instead of a plaque that could be stolen, so would also be looking for someone who's handy with engraving tools. The cost of a park bench and to have it concreted in is $500, but between a bunch of us, this is not a huge expense for a lasting tribute to a lost mate.
Thoughts? Ideas? Whose keen?
Cheers.
UPDATE: Account to put contributions into, please, just whatever you can afford.

I can imagine pulling up there on one of my quiet rides in the valley, taking a seat. The setting: of nature, wildlife and parkland, with the low drone of a motorbike in the background on the motorway......"Guy do you often use your rear brake?"........."Well yes Bruce..........." "Guy I would like you to think about.........."

The more stories I read about Uncle B (and loosebruce), the more disappointed I am that I'd never met him before, and now will not get the chance. Anyone who leaves behind this much of a stir is a special person indeed. And to that end, even though I've not met him, you can count me in for a donation just for being able to hear the stories. Good show Mrs Kendog, love your work.

That's so cool you guys and gals
I was thinking of setting up a bank account so people can deposit whatever they want toward the seat, or if anyone tries to give me cash I can pop it in there.
Would anyone be willing to be a co-signer for this account? (So nobody worries about me getting strapped for cash and using the money on more bike-bling). Would like to set this account up fairly soon so we can get the ball rolling.

Do they not include a brass plaque already?
The one we had made for a lost friend that's on Mt Vic has...it was all included in the price....I know the one for LB will have...maybe it's different than WCC.....

Stonemasons might be the go, Glover Memorials near the Taita Cemetary come to mind. Less chance of a stone plaque being stolen, just ask Finn about his mum's bronze plaque, nothing is sacred so it seems.

Pete

The lady quoted me $500 for the seat alone and said the plaque and engraving of would be an extra cost, but she mentioned that maybe carving a message in the back rest of the seat would be a better idea than a plaque considering the amount of thieving bastards nicking off with them (my words, not hers!). So we can choose, but I would be devastated if some arse pinched the plaque! (Especially where we're thinking of sticking the seat!)

I will update every week or so as to the running total and hopefully this park plan will arrive in my mail box shortly so we can decide where we'd like to pop the seat.

I recall from the funeral service the music that Debbie chose, Louis Armstrong singing "What A Wonderful World"

Perhaps that could be a title on whatever plaque may be chosen/designed, in this way it will have a 'closer' meaning for Debbie and also an important meaning to the rest of us that enjoy the wonderful world of riding.

Am happy to donate to the seat in Bruce's name but should we consider the overflow to go to the SPCA under KiwiBikers name. The memorial to Bruce is well established and the PR for "nasty fat noisy pugalistic bikers" could get a wee boost from a donation by "clean cut, non-smoking, non-drinking, quiet and studious bikers"

Heya Grub - just to clarify, it was indicated very early on that if the money went over what was needed it would be given to SPCA in Bruce and Debbies name as they are right into their animals. I dont believe we should deviate from this idea just because we have extra money over and above the seat. So one park bench and the rest to SPCA is fwhat people are donating money for.

Jim2 - regroup and stay focused mate - its all good.

The desired outcome is to have a seat that will be "Bruces Seat" and every chance i get ill be down there to have a few memories of him.

I just want to say how this all just goes to show what a fantastic guy Bruce was and how much he is being missed by so many. Oh dear ... misunderstood again by hasty posting. :(

I didn't know what had been decided before and was just exploring an idea that we had honoured Bruce and if there was anything left over could we gain some brownie points for "bikers" by doing it in KB's name. Bull's right ... decision was made, I didn't understand the background to it, the right decision has been made. End of story. Goodness, I didn't expect to have such a disruptive affect on the whole thing :(

It's a great initiative and has had a great response, let's not spoil it now ... that certainly wasn't my intention.

As mentioned in my post here.....I'm about to get one up and running for LB.
I took his parents up to MT Vic today to see the seat my friends and myself had made for our dear friend Grant. They seemed genuinely moved by the whole idea, and now simply want to discuss it with Bruces sister as to where they'd like to see one built. They may yet like one with Uncle B's......but please don't approach them......I've got this one under control.

Which brings me to this.....I know a lot of you don't have money to burn....hell I don't either.....but it'd be great if you have some in reserve for this one too.

I'll keep you all up to date once I've heard back from LB's family....and thank you all for your generous donations for this idea.

Just checking in. Current balance is at $810 (thanks guys, you're all awesome!!)
Went into the council today to track down the park plans, (Yes I thought I recognised you Deano, picking up something nice for your bike???:Punk: ), looks like they are constantly in the process of up-grading and the woman (Judy) said that we can basically pop it anywhere we liked when I showed her where we'd like it. So it's all go really. NC's going to draw up a seat plan and send it through to Judy to be approved and then we can get things moving. So hopefully kids, not too much longer before we see some action!:sunny:

Hi Dodger. Money is still sitting in my account slowly gathering interest. I just sent NC a text to see how she's getting along with the making of the seat and consent from the council for her design, but unfortunately, until that is sorted I have to just sit on my hands. If things haven't progressed by the end of July I think I'll just take over again and go ahead and purchase a nifty park bench and finish organising things anyway. Thanks for bumping this back up, and rest assured, as things progress, I'll let everyone know what's going on.

Actually, if you guys want to be helpful, how about you all start posting ideas of what you'd like on the plaque.....
I've just got off the phone from the lady at the council and she suggested that we use engraved formica(sp) for the plaque as it is less likely to get stolen as a brass plaque. Also we can get it as big or small as we like, so can put pictures, song lyrics, a poem etc on it. How about some suggestions.
The seat is a standard park bench as requested, the idea so far is to put it under the little tree by the carpark on Fairway Drive, Avalon Park, but the other question is, do we want it facing the carpark or the park?
Bring it on people.

So how about something like:

In rememberance of our friend Bruce Hannaford (Uncle B).

and maybe something like:

He will ride with us always
????? or something. Just suggestions, I'm not going to please everyone, but hey.

I'm also organising having LooseBruce's seat put in at the same time, and was told we are most welcome to go down when they are put in to arrange them, where they face etc, so if anyone's keen I'm looking at getting them in on the 29th of Nov and we can have an unveiling/ride etc on the Sunday.

I'm certainly happy to go with whatever everyone thinks is appropriate but, I was thinking that we all knew Bruce as Uncle B and having the date would also help in years to come when we're all on motorised scooters and our memory is a bit hazy.

Awesome stuff! I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

Here's a little bit of background on that pic of Uncle B.

It was taken on my most memorable and enjoyable ride. Uncle B, myself, Pex Adams and a couple of others decided to do a "Takaka Run!"

A "Takaka Run" is what we termed a Cook Strait crossing followed by a mad dash to the Takaka hills for a couple of crossings and then a mad dash back to Picton (via Blenheim) for the ferry crossing and then home to bed. A truely fine days ride for any Wellingtonian.

The shot was taken as Uncle B began a descent of the Takakas on the Golden Bay side. I remember turning around and seeing this and thinking WTF???
I grabbed the camera and didn't even have time to line up the shot, I just pressed the button and amazingly, it worked. A truely fine photo of Uncle B that explains volumes about him without the need for any words.

I don't think Uncle B would have wanted to be on any other bike riding at any other location on that day. He was loving it! The weather was fantastic, the company was great and everyone was buzzing with the amazing road conditions of those twisties that day.

I'll never forget that ride. It was the highlight of my motorcycling years and it couldn't have been spent in finer company than that of Uncle B.

I recall the funeral service:

"In remembrance of Uncle B. What A Wonderful World. 3 Dec 2006"

Trudi, you're doing a great job and I look forward to the seats.

I thought "What A Wonderful World" the song title that was Debbie and Bruce's song, I can still hear Louis Armstrong singing it. And I am sure that whatever is engraved, I won't be disappointed if the title is not incorporated, for me I will sit there and think of Bruce and hear Armstrong. Bruce introduced me to the wonderful world of riding.

Ok, all organised, council has all parts of the seat and payment - $562.50, which means that there is about $370 left, am waiting to hear if the plaques are going to cost anything before organising getting the left over $$ to the SPCA.
Can someone who lives nearby or travels past the park regularly, keep an eye out for me and let me know if they see it there, am just thinking that if it's not in by Thursday I might need to give the council a call and hurry them up. Cheers everyone!!!

Cool! So we're on then for the Uncle B Remembrance TCWNR tomorrow night then? Over the hill to Bruce's preferred Wednesday night locale at the red pub in Featherston?

And seeing that this is in honour of Bruce, ride out at 6:30pm sharp.

Except there's another thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=61894) on how shitty the takas are today. Coast road anyone?

I'm coming, regardless.

Well done Kendogs and Skunks!
I second that - you guys are brilliant, you must all be stoked to have finally seen this project through to completion, it is indeed the most perfect way to commemorate Uncle Bruce.
And Mrs KD - you certainly deserve that drink (or two).

Oh and Mrs KD: please stop clicking on my Profile picture, it is getting worn out - ah go on, just a couple more then (might let you have a sit on it on Saturday since you have been such a good girl lately)!

Thanks Malcolm, it is a relief to know it is in and ready to be sat on so we can think of Bruce and eat fish and chips or something. Will take a little trip to the SPCA with the left over dosh soon too.
Funny how one glass of wine soon turns into, "I'll just finish the bottle off",

You've seen Malcolm, eh? I think his being whippet thin somehow gives the impression of height.

That Monster is designed for cool wee folk like yourself. I think you should wait for the run out specials on the S4Rs start appearing as the new model gets released and hock the Hornet in. Or wait for Malcolm to get desperate for cash when he decides to buy a Desmosedieci as his road bike.

Popped in to see the seat on the way to work this morning and it looks great. The plaque is awesome. So much so that I fear it will inevitably be the victim of vandalism.

Only a phone shot........

I'm thinking the same thing when I had a look last night. I felt like I didn't want to draw attention to it by sitting down as there were some evil lower hutt youths lurking (lowercase intentional). I'll wait.

The visual integrity of the seat isn't the most important thing anyway. Maybe if we put a suzuki sticker on it then the miscreants will leave it alone? (again lcase intentional) ;)

I'd be more worried about the tree behind it.

Well, at least it is where I asked them to put it, good on them (the Council), I have to say that the lady I was dealing with there was very helpful and sympathetic to the significance of it.:niceone:
In case anyone was wondering too, the council are in charge of keeping the seat looking nice, cleaning off graffiti and bird poop too hopefully. I asked about painting the seat, but apparently the green is a deterrent for taggers... so go figure.
