View Full Version : What bike should I get?

26th March 2007, 10:23
Ok so I've been looking for a while now and I go to the USA on friday for 2 weeks and buying a new bike when I get back.

My budget is 8k

The choices are so far

06 KTM sx 250 - $8000 pretty mint, owned by a guy at a shop so I'd say well looked after. around 50hours

04 CR250 - $5500 - looks very tidy. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=93247650

05 CR250 - starting bid 5k - looks quite good. Not a problem being in Napier as I can get my brother to look at it. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=92402282

04 CR250 - this bike is reasonably tidy, bit overpriced, but from a shop.. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=70009388

I did see a o6 KX250 for around $6800, but that may have sold

I'm not that keen on a Yamaha and I'd like to try another brand from Suzuki. I's also prefer a non steel frame.

I was tempted by a 4/, but the fact I can do all the work on a 2/ myself appeals to me. I hate having to pay the shop a few hundred dollars to do work I could do myself!! Plus the valve maintenance alone would annoy me. Clearances ever 10-20 hours!!! and the shop charges $70 to do that. Man that would get really expensive fast!!

This is a bike I'm hopefully going to keep for a long time so I guess as new as possible is the best bet. The other way I could go is get a slightly older bike and spend some money on it and get it like new.

Just how well did that work out for you last time? Go the CR, you know you want to!

Edit: Just having a think - is there much benefit for buying a 2nd hand dirt bike from a shop? Cant imagine them putting too much of a warranty on it. I guess at least you know it's not hot . . .

GR81 - I'll take that into consideration and look into that- whatever

WRT - when I said older I meant like 03 -04 and spend the money I save on making it like new. Like that -04 CR

fours are all good easy to work on and you dont have to do it that oftern had mine a year (and yes i know i blew the crank but thats kind extreme) had it stripped and running in 2 1/2 days checked valve clearances and there sweet 1st ive checked them since i got it. guys i ride with lot of them have ktm 4s can be little costly on some parts 1 also had second hand 2stroke nothing but probs did two boxs before he ditched it all within 6 months. I would proberly go for the honda option as a 2 stroke never had any hassles with one ive had in the past but then i like the fours better and will most likely get another YZF but a 450 at the end of the year.

i'd go with the brands who still invest big on developing there 2strk range,(ktm-kwaka), honda openly admit that all the attention was on there 4strks,and when was the last time you saw a honda on the podium anyway?long live the 2stroke!

if you want to wait a little bit longer, kawasaki will have new 08 models out in early july, only a little bit more than you are saying now and then you get a brand new bike, with a full spares kit, they are $9995 this year so i preume they will be simlar next year as well, i am sure some dealers will do deals for folding as well

KTM EXC!!! They're a little bit more but they're a heap better especially for trail riding and the odd cross country type event etc. If it is looked after and serviced regularly etc there wont be a problem. There is one piece of advice i have for people who are open to looking at all bikes and cant decide. Just go out and ride a KTM for a while, you will soon see why there are so many loyal customers and you'll finally understand what this whole orange bike craze is all about. Every person that i have said to just try a KTM has ended up purchasing one and i've yet to see a person who after purchasing at KTM go back to something else. Theres just something about em!

The sharper steering angle makes them turn very well, but they can get a little unstable at high speeds, thats why some people fit stabalisers. But its not really a big deal unless you're doing heaps of real open and fast riding.

being that cheese is overseas, i will reply with what he has told me.

the bikes are rather flimsy feeling compared to others, hondas for example, have a couple of crashes on a yamaha and it looks rooted, have a couple of crashes on anything else and its still sweet. also the riding position is odd

WTF?The plastics do frost up easy but at least Yamahas dont crack around the frame and the engines last as long if not longer than most so wats the prob? So wat if it doesnt look pretty after you slam it into a bank at 100kph at least you know it will be in one peice......Some bars would fix the riding possion im shure.

Yeah I've had a yamaha and a suzuki and I'd like to get a Honda. Honda have great reputations as bike builders and I've never really heard anyone complaining about there CR (other than jeremy).

The think that is pointing me more towards the honda now is that I can get a bike for about 5-6k, then I can spend some money on a pipe, jetting and just for kicks a bottom end rebuild adn maybe the wheel bearings etc. I think that way I have a bike taht I know all teh parts are new and it's good to go.

Danger
16th April 2007, 15:29
The 05-07 CR's have been very hard to get jetted right and to stop detonating. They don't have a wide powerband like the other brands and are more like an angry 125. They are very tempermental jetting wise.

I'm looking quite seriously at a 04 CR250 that is pretty mint. It's been in storage for 18 months (legit resons) and so it's like a new bike. For a little over 5k It would be a mint bike.

I do think that I read somewhere that the porting on the 05 onwards CRs was nuts like that. I'll see If I can find the mag on it tonight and have a read.

Maybe I should get that 06 KTM 250 SX.........

Speaking of CR's
My 01' CR250 honda is a good bike. I do all my own maintenance and I must say the build quality is really good. And I have spent years karting with many types of hot 125 engines on avgas and methanol. Never worked on a honda till the CR and it looks like it was built to "last and go fast" not just go fast. Probably why they are not wining everything. Same with the CBR1000rr as well i think . And thats a Kawasaki man talking!

To get to the point when I was talking to Tjebee at Bruin he said he had a late model KTM 300 for sale. You might like to give him a call. He gave the bikes big wraps.

Well I had a ride on Booooms 06 CR250 and Archers 07 KX250, to be honest I liked both the bikes, but archers was much more forgiving. The CR had very sharp power delivery and the slightest twist of the throttle and you were up on the back wheel and flying! The KX had a much nicer delivery of power and just felt easier to ride. I think that the heavier flywheel was probably the thing that made all the difference, but I flet more in control on the KX. all other aspects felt very similar.

So it will be interesting to see this one on Saturday, it's the same year as Archers, but with a few porting mods. I didn't really get to open both of the bikes up as there were 5,000 people at ardmore and the track was so wet it was a slip and slide!!! Plus I was quite parinoid of stacking the bikes, and I haven't had a ride since last year!!

Roll on Saturday

26th April 2007, 09:42
Hey cheese wouldn't getting a fly wheel weight fix the CR problem. As per the other thread I'm having exactly the same problem. Although I'm blaming it on my lack of skill to handle all that power even though my bike is a much earlier model.
As per handling after many years karting and getting into MX. I have come to the conclusion that any MX bike you buy you have to get the shocks sent away and set up for the riding you do and your riding stlye. Or is that just because I haven't ridden a KTM??

They both have sharp power delivery, the CR was just very very unforgiving and felt like a rocket as soon as I touched the throttle.

Gald to hear you've finally scratched your itch and emptied your wallet.

Interesting to see you picked the Honda even though you liked the KX better when you rode them. And how did that compare to the KTM you tested??

Should get my fly wheel weight this week but Danger was a bit busy to do my forks (just rung him). Thats not a problem so I'll put them back in.

Yeh 01 CR's rule. B4 I bought mine (all I could afford) I googled all makes of bikes in about that price bracket and the opinion was that 01 Honda was the best of the Hondas in the surrounding years.

Well it came down to the CR was available (the KX seemed to just go on and on for me waiting for it) and the fact that the KX was an ex race bike just had me worried a little bit. That KTM the guy decided that he didn't want to sell it to me for my offer and tried to sell me a 04 KTM instead (bugger!!). The CR is like new (only done 15 hours) and it has a pipe, bars and tripple clamps with it. So all I want to get is some radiator guards, bash plate, and a flywheel. It came down to yes the bike is older, but it's like new and so that will do me!!

CAn't wait to ride it. I'm really tempted to go to ardmore tomorrow.

Yeah sorry about that Rick, caught me in a very busy week. Get them to me early next week and I should be good to go. Have some other bikes to do but looks like a couple can be put off for another week.

Glad to see your going to be back on the trails Cheese. Catch up for a ride sometime eh?

Going out on sunday if your keen.

I'm not suer all I know it was some kind of factory race bike. I was really keen to see it, but I was sick of waiting.

Just got the Honda, fuck it's awesome. I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them up. I took it for a blast down teh road to test it out fully, man its so much faster than my old RM. It's got such a nice power bite. It's smooth then wham into the top revs so quick.

Hey No sweet at all Danger!
I didn't expect you to drop everything you had on, the minute I picked up the phone. What I said was a statement of fact not in anyway a complaint.

Might like to meet you for a ride cheese. But might have my two boys with me and they are learners (like me) so don't want to hold you up. Also depends on if I can be bothered to put my suspenders back in just for one ride.
Where are you planning on going!

I just got a

flywheel - cause I ride like a bitch
some radiator guards - cause I fall off
Piston Kit - I'll do a rebuild
Motominder - to watch the hours better
New bolt for trail tech computer - so I can see how slow I'm going
New chain and sprockets - chain is rooted!

With your CR, as long as you have a good set of tyres on it and maintain it it should be sweet. The flywheel will help you alot.

Now me!
flywheel - cause I'd like be able to ride the bitch
No radiator guards - cause I don't go fast enough
Piston Kit - Needs a rebuild-done 40 hours now
Motominder - Excell spreadsheet when I get home
New bolt for trail tech computer - Don't wanna know how slow I'm going
New chain and sprockets - Mines good

Fuck me! 1 outa 6 I'm doin real good 2day! lol

And the tyres. Well my Rears bit worn but I just fixed a slipping clutch that I must have had since I bought it. Now the bitch has a will of its own (hence the new fly wheel weight) so loosing a bit of grip in the back (fronts good) won't hurt a bit.
