View Full Version : New gloves, will they be alright?

Hiya everyone, I'm after a bit of advice here.

My old gloves had the stiching coming apart on one finger..not a real problem day to day, but I wasn't sure what would happen in a fall.
They were well worn, pretty comfy, and probably a bit stretched after getting wet several times...sometimes I'd get folds or bunches across the right palm, which felt a bit wrong.

So I bought some new gloves from TradeMe, although they were a large, where my old pair were an XL the measurements sounded like they'd fit, and they looked good for the price.

They seemed to fit fine when I tried them on, but now that I've ridden with them there are a few funny things.
The black vents on each finger are completely solid, and when I bend my fingers they dig in across my knuckles.

This is only a mild discomfort...on the plus side, because I wasn't able to bend my fingers as easily, I found I didn't establish a death grib on the bars...and my hands felt less tired when I got home.

So what I'd like advice on is whether the knuckle stuffness etc sounds like a problem..or whether it's commonplace on gloves with all those extra protective bits.
Also whether the size difference could be an issue...while they fit they are quite snug..do you need/want room inside the gloves or should they be as fitted as possible

Pic included, new gloves are the yellow ones on the left, old are the black ones on the right.

Cheers in advance for any helpful tips

I bought a pair of gloves a little while back that also have all the protective bits (they look quite a bit like your new ones). I also had some early concerns with stiffness and more things poking into my fingers and top of my hand than my old, very soft gloves, but either I've got used to them, or they've softened a bit.

I suppose the questions I'd ask would be, can you easily get to all of the things you need while wearing them (would they make getting to the brakes for an emergency stop difficult?), and on a longish ride, do they get to be so uncomfortable that you have difficulties wearing them?

You mean the big heavy protector bits across your main knuckles?

Yeah. common problem. Mine were so bad originally that my knuckles nearly bled but I wore them around the house, while watching TV forming a fist over and over again and just rode with them. Took several weeks but they ended up fitting like a .....well....like a glove!! :)

It's the proetectors pushing against the stitching that presses into your hand or knuckles and yeah, it can hurt especially after a long ride. But, now they are perfect so perservere.

What are knuckle protectors supposed to protect one's knuckles from? Plummeting space debris?

Actually the black vents at the second joint on each finger.

Cheers guys, sounds like they just need to be worn in a bit, will keep with them and see how it goes.

A lil trick I Learned. Get the gloves really wet --as in sodden wet then wear them straight away and let em dry on ya hands.
It speeds up the er "running in" process --its pretty darn uncomfortable but well woth the effort

:)

Was pleased I had knuckle protectors in my off. The plastic knuckle covering and high tensile mesh was worn through three knuckles so if it had been just leather......

Hot sunny day, tub of leather softener/conditioner, they are all much of a muchness but old fashioned Coachaline is good
Coat them heavily while warm, then back out in the sun- let it soak in, then recoat while still warm and wear them as said previously but without the soggy crap.
Repeat after a few weeks then every 6 months depending on how often you wear them especially in the rain.

I can confirm that. I bought a pair of Quasi's gloves, wore them once (pretty tight and stiff and ghey at first), the next day it pissed down with rain and the gloves got completely soaked. After that they were perfect!

That same trick works a treat on new leather walking boots. A nice soaking and then a few hours' walk moulds them to your feet perfectly.
