View Full Version : gijoe1313's Saturday Pootling Ride for Early Birds

Okay, had to make this a separate thread so people planning on being put off the word "pootling" due to attending this ride can have the whys, wherefores, thou arts and saythewhats?

Meeting point is BP Autobahn Papakura at 6.30am. Ride will commence at 7am so people can have a chance to regain their sanity, head back home and go back to sleep :sweatdrop

This is the ride in stages ... as usual all plans are flexible and stops are built in so people can say "bugger this, I'm orf 'ome!"

BP Autobahn Meet point 6.30am -> Drury
Drury -> Tuakau -> SH22 turn off left to Rangiri
Follow the road on the the shore of the great Waikato -> Ngaruawahia

Break Time - meeting up with Zeroindex and the 'Tron crew at the Ngaruawahia BP 8.00ish

Let Zeroindex lead us out around the 'Tron to Morrinsville to Te Aroha along SH26

Ride down towards Opal Hot springs on the southern lee of the Kaimai Ranges, lovely little back road.

Head towards SH29 to Tauranga and have an extended break, lunch, pee and poo!

Tauranga Lunch break -> Katikati -> Paeroa via SH2

Paeroa -> Kopu via SH26 -> Waitakaruru -> Miranda -> Kaiaua

Kaiaua -> Clevedon -> BP Takanini for the final debrief and farewells (any mad 'Tron riders at this point have earned my respect!)

Throughout this, plenty of stops for stretches, smoke 'em if you got 'em, etc. Also these stops are for those people who need to head home due to the fact they have a life and realise that gijoe1313 is pootlin'crazy!

Remember to check your tyre pressure/tread, do some basic maintenance, lube your chains, check indicators/lights/horns/etc.

Also pack some light gear you think will be handy (cameras, blah, blah)...
Oh, what's the use? :eek5: You're all grown-ups, I'll leave it in your capable hands!

Good rule of thumb:

If you have to say "I need to be back by blah blah time..."

Don't attend the ride.

Invariably, they will go WAY over time budget... such is the nature of pootling!

Jinkies! The only way you will be back on time on Saturday is if you join us for the ride out to Ngaruawahia and then say your goodbyes and pootle back - that way you will have time to have a little rest and make your meet!

after all, 6.30am get together 7.00am start - ride to Ngaruawahia and back to Papakura, Dorkland will be around 150km. All things going well, you should be back around 10am ... good enough to get a pootle in and back for your meet!

Hey man...have you considered having your lunch break at the Okororie Pub? It's west of the Kaimai's by 5mins and is a beautiful ol' pub worthy of a stoppage.
Either way...give me a buzz and we'll be popping over to meet you on the west side of the Kaimai's

I remember that pub! Just north of Tirau and between Selwyn innit? I'll have to throw that open to the group and see what they would like! Give you a bell when we get to Te Aroha .. that way we'll know how we're doing for time!

Sweet as sir...give me some rough times and I could be able to sort a welcoming party...or how about a party :innocent:
The only reason why I suggested the Oko is is that it's VERY biker friendly and Tauranga has no real views UNLESS you were thinking of scooting out to the Mt. for lunch...tres loverly out that way

My Dear Miss Croft, you know any two wheels are welcomed on any ride! Bigger bikes more than welcomed to ride along, and shoot ahead, turn around, ride somewhere else, come back to check in and zip off ahead again!

I'm catering to all those who wish to lay more rubber on the road, travel past their comfort zones and above all, have plenty of fun, fun, fun!

The more the merrier :woohoo:

But, it's an early start! And here's me still awake! Bad boy! Off to beddy bye byes for me now! :sweatdrop

GIjoe, good to see you again mate. The others I didn't quite catch the names of nice to meet you.

Was last to the pub even though I got to the bottom of the kaimis with only Chris in front of me cause my fuel light came on. I tried going to Te Poi but that servo no longer has fuel pumps so had to ride to Tirua/Tirau whatever it is on SH1 before Putaruru. Bike ran out and died just as I pulled in the servo driveway.

Ride back was good fun and my foot still hurts from that cat's eye it hit. I know DMNTD's world now.

Joe, seriously love the sound of your bike man, shame all 250s don't sound as cool.

Believe it or not, I didn't actually pootle the most milage today! That honour will go to either Minny or Toymachine! :weep: They still have to get home and here I am already posting up my first impressions (which I will have to detail later ... have a friend who needs a lift in my cage)

To Zeroindex : Mate, you are a crack-up. Good to catch up with the 'Tron crew and that skit with our mobile phones was straight out of a Monty Python gag! Glad you kep the reputation of hard riding up! And, oh yeah, what's your next trick with pillion seats?

To Zeroindex's mate (Rob was it?) : You're hard-case like Zeroindex, figgers he'd keep friends who are just like him, biker hoonz! :msn-wink:

To Waylander : Your ride is one serious piece of metal, I was drooling over it when we split up after the Tauranga Uphill GP (DMNTD heard me say "That's one serious piece of metal!")

To DMNTD : You're still a nut-job, fruit-loop and one straitjacket (no, not str8jacket! Sheesh!) away from the funny farm! Seeing you ride hard out like that, fair took my breath away - I think your destiny with Aaron is kismet!

To Blairos : You ripper you! Your expertise with the dogpoo puncture repair was worth the start of the ride being delayed! Good to catch up and hear from the horse's mouth about your trip down SI ... I'm inspired! And handy to have a map to check it all out too! :niceone:

To Toymachine : You are a legend in the making, ratbucket looking bike and you're ringing the nuts off it! You beauty! And nice save on my rear tyre - I think I should have backed off a little with it having a hole in it and all, but the honour of my little ol'Hornet was at stake!
To Minny : I think you maxed out the potential of your Ginny and ride more than anyone else today! You gave it death and gave it the learn through the twisties, by the time you get home, I think you would have top honours for pootling milage!

Okay, mate just txted me, need to dash (sigh ... cage bound ... I could have clocked more milage on the little ol'Hornet!) Will post some photos and the usual epic thesis that passes for my posts here in KB! :innocent:

Last 2km or so from home were a killer. Was really getting over it by then.

But WHAT a ride, my god @ the kaimai's (sp?).

Cold start. Serious shrinkage :P

Almost thought it was gonna be over early at one point, accelerating on one of the straights there was a huge bang of smoke out of both your pipes Gijoe, guess it wasn't anything major.

Feeling pretty numb and sore now, thats alot of k's being 6'2 on a CBR.

Lol thanks mate, it may not be as fast or as pretty as other flaming machines but I love riding it. Enjoyed following you from just off from the Oko too. Fast but not silly with it and good lines. I might have to show up on more of your rides. Fun to ride with you where as with the rest of the group here while still fun, I end up riding by myself most of the time.

hello, well i am well and truly buggered.:zzzz: .........what a ride, i shall leave most of the glorious details to GIjoe as im just to tired to write it all down

like to say thanks very much to all involved, very good sports and patient, as i was tail end charlie, and for alot of the ride i was so far behind i could have been anyones tail end charlie in the nth island really...ha ha ha, my wee ginny did its best to keep up, i discovered it dosnt go any faster than 120 no matter how hard i tried, but i cant blame it all on the ginny as was a bit wary of the twisites, especially as i nearly binned going into the pub turnoff, at oko , was cruising along hadnt seen the lads turn off, silly me jumped on brakes, went all crooked on the loose metal , flying toward a peice of grass where i regained control , for that i can thank my ginny , on another bike prob would have lost it, any way got myself turned round man from golf course standing in middle of road golf club in hand had seen incident and came to see if i was alright ( thanks mystery man) so good lesson learnt then... dont panic turn round slowly if miss turnoff.......must remeber that

funniest site of the day was seeing toymachine cleaning his visor with brush at gas station that you you use to clean windscreen of a car......whilst still wearing it

best lesson learnt for the day , how to quickly fix a puncture, thanks Blairos, hope you enjoyed helping to test drive the yellow beast of Terbangs.

great to meet the new faces

oh i also learnt that the lights of the GN are pretty useless, first time ive ridden at night, got home at around 7pm i think it was.

thanks again GIJOE1313 for organising the pootle. ...alsways wanted to know what it was like to ride all day.........now i know..........next time i ride all day, it wont be on a GN

total kms for the day .......wait for it.......595km not bad for a ginny:done:

I think more people are starting to realise how crazy my "pootling" really is! The others are legends in the making, I was so impressed with how they just shook their head and rubbed their numb bits ... and realised I could have still kept riding! :innocent:

And oh yeah, I would have but my mate needed a pick up in the cage :crybaby:

A certain Mighty Ginny was piloted for 595km!? That surpasses anything I've done in equivalent terms! :Punk:

And as for a ride tomorrow? I would have planned one, but my olds need me to redo the guttering on the house :weep:

Ah well, I shall plan one for next week methinks... muwahahaha!!! A pootle up north I think! :msn-wink:

People are asking where i went, and i've really no idea

 You crack me up!

OKay ... so people don't think you've gone bonkers ... this is what we did!

1. Drury/Pukekohe/Tuakau (the early bit with the dogpoo incident)
2. Rangiri (the foggy bit)
3. Ngaruawahia (the Zeroindex monty python scene and meet with Sidewinder)
4. Hamiltron/Morrinsville/Te Aroha (the visor wiping incident)
5. Okoroire (pub grub and bike porn drool fest with the Tauranga mob)
6. Kaimai Uphill GP (those scorching curves and DMNTD showing us how it's meant to be done)
7.Katikati/Waihi/Whangamata (those twisty bits and where your arse went numb)
7.5. The bit of SH25A where there was metal and the yellow bike blitzing past us.
8. Kopu/Pipiroa Express with the Mini Miranda GP (where we turned right at the bridge)
9. The Mangatangi backdoor to Mangatawhiri and the Hunua ranges (sunstrike city)
10. Clevedon and home sweet home.

There! Now for homework, I want you to go to SMAPs and do a looky up of those places. The next test will involve riding that route in reverse!

Somehow, I think people won't believe you - they never believe me until they see my odometer and I start babbling off about all these funny little things that you can only know, if you've been there! :msn-wink:

Yep, that always gives people a fright! It's my little ol'Hornets way of clearing it's pipes for action. Plenty of carbon built up in it and detonation always catches people out!

Usually I like to give it a nice 10-14k rev thrashing when I'm out "pootling" in the twisties and sweepers! :innocent: Just not thrashing it like Zeroindex, Sidewinder, Injected, Waylander, DMNTD (and everyone else for that matter!)

You should have sat on my little ol'Hornet, once you do, you'll understand how I can ride so long and so incessantly on it! :woohoo:

And never say never ... the last 2kms, I'm usually thinking "dizzam, I don't want this to end ... fill up at the local servo and pootle off again somewhere!" But I respect my little ol'Hornet too much and I have to park it up and hug it and love it and pat it and talk to it and tease it with thoughts about what bling to buy it (ooh ooh! DMNTD talked about new levers ... My little ol'Hornet would love those ones!)

Final gasp for this post ... you're a legend in the making mate! Every ride that is under the mark for this one, you'll just go "pffft! That's such a little pootle mate!":done:

Now, being the usual nincompoop and scurrilous knave I am - I completely forgot I was asian and needed to take more photos than I did! :o oopsie! Zapf will have my guts for garters!

Anyhows, I think I was having too much fun to bother with it - next bling upgrade, camera mounts on several places on little ol'Hornet and a datatrack HD under the seat to record it all! (ooh bling...)

1. Ooh side shot of bike porn ... pity about the plonker shadow of the camera operator (only way I seem to get in these pics!) Minny seems intent on eavesdropping on the current user of the WC... (this is out of sequence, but it makes for funnier commentary! :devil2:
2. Toymachine ... gone to the dunny without taking his lid off... this is a disturbing trend as witnessed next...
3. The visor wash Toymachine style ... This was the second time he did it this way (1st was in Te Aroha!)
4. Close up of the unique Toymachine style. Watch out for a YouTube presentation of Toymachine StyleTM!
5. I dimly recall there was an arse shot thread floating on KB somewhere .... here's Minnnnny! The slogan is purely photoshopped for my own nefarious enjoyment! (Sorry! :o  :innocent:)

Good ride yesterday - nice to catch up with some familiar faces, and some new ones!

GIJoe - its good to see you now know how to put the dog-poo to good use :) That repair held up quite nicely.

After I left you lot at Oko, I made it to back to Waiuku in about 85 mins - the roads were pretty empty on the route I took, total KM for the day once I got home was about 500.

As for the fog - yes, riding around in temps of about 6 degrees or less (after I thermalled up on top, but forgot the liner for the lower half) can make the nuts retract more than I care to discuss ha ha...

Good to see the Tauranga crew at Oko for Lunch, and to meet some of our "Tron" bretheren as well - cant say I have seen a VTR250 do the things that I saw yesterday.

In closing, "Mr Pootle", - a good day, good route plan, shame I couldnt join you for the return trip, but there will always be another day! (Maha has a trip up north planned next weekend, since you mentioned that earlier)

Hehe, :sweatdrop actually I think I shouldn't have been riding as I did with that dogpoo repair! I was just riding along like I normally do ... until in certain twisties, I realised (gah! Bad time to do that!) that there was only dogpoo between the road and my arse! :eek5:

Never mind, alls well that ends well! I think Jafas are earning their soft nicknames! Me being a Wellingtonian, thought the cold was just a walk in a balmy breeze (one ORCA top must be magical in its cold resistance, Orcas swimming in the cold briny and all that, with ice bergs even!)

Seriously, that tutorial you did on puncture repair (btw, need to swap you my set of dogpoo for yours!) I wished I photogged it! Would have been a very handle dandy thing!

In fact, I think I will run a fixitbreakit spanner night on using the tools on my old tyre before it gets replaced! Just need to see where I can buy more dogpoo from!

500km? I think you did the same milage as all of us in the end! What did you do? Take the gijoe1313 patented pootling route back home? :msn-wink:
