Be extra careful around the schools Welly bikers

Did anyone else see the article tucked away in the Dom Post this morning about the constabulary paying extra attention around Wellington schools this week?

Apparently it's UN traffic accident reduction week, or something, and the rozzers are going to be targeting school speed limits. So just remember it's 54 kph max 250 metres from schools, unless you feel like contributing to the consilidated fund and the stats that tell us we need to be punished further for using the roads.

Its the first day of new school term..will be extra busy and people not so organised.....shouldnt this be everyday? There is no excuse for speeding past or near schools in any case!!!!!!!!!!(waits for the howls of protest from the sportsbike community..... I know I know its cool to go fast, the kids love it, etc etc) but this has been covered before...the Police are targeting speeders in and around schools this year..you spped and get caught then please dont come here whinging about the revenue gathering that occurs..its a voluntary contribution and in this case one for being a dick!!!!!!

You might as well complete your point, mate..."is there any excuse for speeding anywhere?" That's a not a Holier than Thou statement from me - I'm as guilty as the next man with 75DPs on my licence - but I defy anyone to admit to religiously sticking to the speed limit at all times. Me? I'm afraid I tend to (inadvertantly) creep over 50 in built up areas (cos it's so easily done) and on the other hand I'm equally guilty of checking whose about on a quiet back road and blatting off for 2km sprint at 160kph. I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that there are bikers out there who obey the speed limits to the letter. Hmmm... has there been a poll on this I wonder?

Your point? Of course if you speed and get caught it's your fault! Yes you should be careful and alert where ever you ride/drive. It's just a reminder that 54ks doesn't leave a lot of leeway for error.

I see lots of pretty blinking electronic "40" speed signs around some north shore schools. Hard to miss.

ill be doin about 40 this afternoon... the primary school is on a main road. most cars and trucks go past at a decent rate of knots. i always get tailgated, and its always by parents.

Saw the article this morning before I left for work, so I went a bit slower past the local school (Park Rd, Miramar) making sure I wasn't going above 50 - road was empty.
Sure enough there was a red speed camera van about 20 metres before the school, at 7:30am

Knowing the road-safety mullahs in this part of the world, provided you weren't doing more than 54kph on the back wheel, they'd be fine with it.

'Cos remember kids, Speed Kills!™. Driving whilst shouting at the kids, talking on your cell-phone, not looking at each junction, putting your make-up on in the rear-view mirror, not indicating or adjusting the radio are all fine.

I always find it funny that people here make a conscious decision to exceed the speed limit and then complain bitterly about it when they get caught blaming revenue gathering, quotas etc. My point is this...yes we all speed at times (even on a Harley) but yes we choose to do so. In the same way as you explain actions and consequences to a 8 year old....if you choose to speed and you get caught, take it....don't whine about it...(or give red reps!!!!!) and no I haven't given a voluntary contribution lately....my kids do attend a school on a busy road however and I get totally p*ssed off at the bikes and cagers who roar past before and after school.......rant over anyway....

Sorry mate, I don't recall ever giving any one red rep, and I'm not advocating speeding around schools, or anywhere else.

It's a perfectly consistent position to a) disagree with the law b) break it c) only complain about it when the law you disagree with actually affects you.

n.b. NOT defending speeding past schools (although i'd rather you speed than drive along slowly in your happy place, barely noticing a thing around you)

Too soft. Anybody who screams around built up residential areas at excessive speed, especially around schools when the kids are coming or going, should be shot... and then the ticket should be sent to the next of kin.

anyhow, with all the mum drivers on cellphones while changing nappies and doing makeup in mirror i avoid schools during school rush hour like i avoid sexually transmitted disease. (aren't kids just another std?)
