Hey great to see you guys!

The idea is that there is no pressure or plan. Every Sunday at 10 anyone who has the itch turns up at Caltex Rimutaka and the group decides where to go. Usually it's over the hil to brunch somewhere in the 'rapa but many other places and plans have evolved

Talk about a wild and woolly ride today. I neally lost it once coming over the hill on one corner with a blast of wind, but managed to stay on the safe side of the fence.. (Phew) Great turnout and that Wild Oats cafe food...(drools). Went to all the trouble to bring the dang camera and forgot about it. Lucky someone else had theirs there. Looking forward to the next one, but hope the breeze is a little less intense, eh?

Well I had a good time, I'm a bit wary of group rides, often people use them as an excuse to jump off in front of a crowd trying to impress members of the same sex:sick:. Generally I saw some fairly cruisey riding, but with the odd desperate overtaking move on the way down the hill.

Only 3 of us carried on to Ngawi for chips, Wanabee & Carnlee or however you spell it. Nice to meet you both. Was a good ride with less wind than the rest of the ride (like compared to the hill home). Tar seal all the way bar some roadworks, worth doing the ride, I hadn't for quite some years. Just head to Lake ferry & after Piranoa (sp) turn left for Cape Palliser. Good sea views.

Well it was hoseing down this morning so decided a hot coffee and back into bed for a while as the rimatakas didnt seem that appealing at that time, But then after lunch the sun came out, so natually we had to take the bikes out, Karmakiller and myself did a tour around Kapiti and the surrouning hills before heading back home for a coffee., Roll on the next weekend.

The Sunday morning ride is definately suitable for beginners ... we are there to support as well as offer challenges for you. The wednesday night rides are great for beginners .. that is where I started .. and a lot of fun ... the reason for the Sunday ride is to have a ride during the winter months when Wednesdays are too hard and dark :)

Well guys and girls I kept a pretty low profile at the Rimutex this morning. Johnnie on the Ducati as most of you saw had some issues, with a short and battery that couldn't hold charge. Thought it best that Stevedee Johnnie and I headed off ourselves to Martinborough. As it turns out Johnnie's bike died numerous times on the way home and Stevedee accompanied all the way home.

Meanwhile, thanks for the feedback comments about the new Hornet, as remarked the oggie knobs are on order, the Givi screen has arrived and the mounting kit for the screen is on back order.

Thoroughly enjoyed the ride back over the Rimutaka Hill, just stayed tail end of traffic stream and the bike felt very smooth in 3rd/4th/5th going up and over the hill.

Heads Up and Enjoy

Well the gathering for the Cruisy Sunday morning ride got to around 15 bikes in all at the Caltex Rimutaka this morning. By around 10.15 the odd two or three went on their own tour, and the rest of us moved onward around 10.20.

The weather was a little unsettled to start, but what a difference once over the hill. A warm sunny day. Regrouped at the summit and then again at the Ocean beach turnoff at Featherston.

Group descussion saw us end up at the Lake Ferry Hotel for fish and chips , with the odd steak sandwich and garlic bread on some plates. A few liquid refreshmensts to wash it all down, and we were away again. Somebody suggested the windmills east of Martinbourgh, so a cruise there, then down to Martinbourgh for a coffee, before departing for home.

Great to see some new faces, and some not so new. Names escape me, but you all know who you are.
Have attached a few photos ..

... Exactly 3 months last Thursday since that little fall off on the takas, I got my bike back AND the physio signed me off as allowed to ride .... yeee harrr.

OK, so what's all this about riding on Sunday mornings? Sounds like a silly idea to me, but I'll force myself ... and here is the forecast.

Kapiti-Horowhenua
Sun 2 Rain clearing early morning, but remaining rather cloudy, with a few showers at first. Gusty westerly winds easing.

Wairarapa
Sun 2 Rain clearing early morning and becoming mainly fine.Gusty northwest winds turning southwest late morning with a brief period of coastal showers. Southwesterlies dying out from evening.

... and for the valiantly adventurous ...

Manawatu
Sun 2 Rain clearing early morning, but remaining rather cloudy, with a few showers at first. Gusty westerly winds easing.

The Wairarapa is sounding good as long as we don't do the "south coast" which I guess does Lake Ferry and/or Ngawi in the eye

What a great ride to get back into the saddle with ... and I didn't fall off once! Did stop and have a look at Grub's Corner and decided you'd have to be a real Wally to fall off there.

great day, great people, wet gloves never mind.

I'm surprised about the wet gloves Rocket coz mine are dry. That bit of rain when we started and then fine and dry for the rest of the day was pretty damn good.

It' a long time since I've been out the back there over the twin towers - what a great piece of road. Looks like we did 223km for the day with good roads and good people.

Ahh but then there is The Hill. Some prat in a Nissan 4WD has dropped the entire contents of either his sump or diesel tank in the middle of the road from the summit almost to the garden cafe at Kaitoke. He'd pulled off into the layby just before the last corner - the oil track followed him.

Hey!, You saw me on the way home gosh

Richard
Thanks Richard. No it's not a spanker but as good as,it's a fresh import with barely 20k up on the clock.I've never seen a tidier example and the dealer offered a very reasonable trade for the old XJ750.It's so different to the VTR, more refined power delivery and a whole lot more technology,I think I prefer the VTR for "hooning the hill" but the VFR will suit "her in doors" much better for touring.

you should be fine Kazza, ive been on my 250 many times and the ride is fine - just let the ride leader know youre new and theyll make sure youre not left behind. Its a nice cruisy ride at your own pace everytime, some go off fast at the front and the rest pootle along at there own speed and meet up along the way at scheduled stops.

Have been adjusting stuff on the bike, be interesting to see what it feels like so it'll be a nice cruisy ride, 150's and 250's will be right in their element.

No worries today because her and my son went out to a gig in town last night and didn't surface out of bed until well after I was home off the ride.

So have fun without me tomorrow - enjoy the ride. Glad to hear you are back in action Grub.

OK, just in case you all think something terrible happened to Wannabiker's Ducati or him, it was just a case of the sump being overfilled. Once the overflow catch tank filled up, it was oil everybloodywhere. Oil kinda got lots of places like the inside of the fairing, over the engine and some on the tyre. Smart move was for him to trailer it from the summit home for a clean up.

Gotta love the new setup on top of the Takas with The Worlds Fastest Indian on the home theatre and the Xboxes there to amuse ourselves with. Good coffee too.

Oh, the traditional lineup pic - please excuse my crappy PDA camera, but you get the idea.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the sexy orange naked bike on the end?

Some kind off naked Kawasaki - 1000cc?? Its the previous model to the current one with the joke mufflers.

The FZR400 attended today and despite practising my motocross skills on the way down the hill it is getting better and better :niceone:

I had 2 utter brain farts today which could have had poor outcomes.

One was heading over the Paekakareki Hill rd first thing this am when I stopped riding the motorcycle and let it start riding me and we both drifted out the the centre on a blind corner for no reason other than a complete and utter lack of focus and inattention. We didn't 'quite' cross but had we done so and a car had been coming it would have been messy - stupid!

Two was going down the hill with Mal behind me and for some reason i decided I was superroadracingguywhodefiesphysicsatwill.... I overtook a 4wd in a really dumb place and found myself steaming into a tight downhill lh bend on a bike I know fuck all about and trust even less with a heavy vehicle right up my arse and little idea of what to do about it other than try and scrub off some speed before i tipped in later than a 5 month pregnancy test... When i heard the rear shock top out with a solid 'clunk' I thought - oh bugger - thats not good.... Mr rear tyre (of which I'm suspicious - I think it's plotting against the rest of the bike) decided it had enough of helping slow down the bicycle and went on strike and stopped rotating - the rear stepped sideways (it always seems yards but was inches) and it was all going slomo... I was laughing by then (idiot) and rather impressively used my ample bum and steely thighs to flick it straight again until enough speed was gone and tipped in later than a post delivery pregnancy test (its a running gag OK) and around we went easy peasey. While this was going on I had the cheek (still braking and sliding about) to turn in the saddle and give the 4wd a little wave which I'm hoping made me look cool but was really just nervous energy... I felt in control (idioticly delusional) but it was really NOT required and dumb dumb dumb....

Some people (me) are a damn menace!

I left the troop at Martinborough for a trip back around the lake - a spot of lunch before visiting people who tolerate me, have coffee machines and were unfortunate enough to be home when i called in before coming home...

Nice to see you folks and i promise to sharpen the heck up....

Ok! well the 2 litres of oil that spread itself all over my boot, trouserleg and bike is now all cleaned up. On closer inspection it wasnt just that the breather had gulped a mouthfull of oil, but in fact, the filler bung had come out (which is infinately better than having the sump bung come out).
Hade done an oil change on the bike about 3 weeks ago, and DID tighten the bung as tight as I would have tightened any filler plug, so, new bung tomottow, and lockwire the sucker in once tight.
Was a great ride today. Though, after leaving Carterton I thought my right boot was a bit slippery on the footpeg, but put it down to having stood in something at Carterton  Mrswannabiker was following me thru Greytown and on to Featherston...foot still slippery, and she looked a little hazy in the mirror, which I might add is usual as Ducati mirrors vibrate like hell! Hit the takas and it was all on for young and old!haha...still with slippery footpeg, but sticky tyres!! Pulled over at the summit and bike dissappeared in cloud of smoke and just about slipped over on the BIG pool of oil in the carpark. The 10 000 bikers that were there all stared and came over to offer advise...buy a Honda...you know...Nah, they were really helpful, and gave me a hand to push the Duczilla outa harms way. Thank you all. (And thank my lucky stars that I didn't bin, coz the rear tyre was covered in oil)
The next phase was to ride the mighty FXR150 home, get the car and trailer and come pick up my baby, and Mrswannabiker. (note: bringing back oil-soak to clean up my mess too!)
Thanks all for your help and support, especially Nasty and Grub, who stayed with MrsW at the summit cafe drinking coffee till I got back with the trailer!:first:

If you are worried - pm someone - anyone - well almost anyone - and they will escourt you if ya like... These are all very nice folks (apart from me) and it's a great place to start..

If your total riding time is 100km only - you might want to run it around the block a 'few' more times and again - just send a pm to someone and you will get either help or direction...

Well there I was, watching you come up the hill. You pulled in behind the bus and I expected you all to stop for 5 mins to regroup. When you didn't appear around the other side of the bus I went looking. Only to find that you had all disappeared down the hill. By the time I got the lid and gloves on and got after you, I had a stream of cages in front of me so never did catch up.
I wasn't sure if you had went straight on to Carterton or shot off to Martinborough. Never mind. I had a good day just playing on the hill.

Oh! and if the guy who I came up on on the Featherstone side is on the site. my apologies. Pulled out to go past a cage and the ar$%%le closed the gap and moved over to the right. Forced me to have to take the next cage as well. Thankfully it was a bike that came around the next bend and not a car.

Well yep, a little. Have set everything to vanilla beige. All adjustments are now in the middle of their range. That's better than it was. I think someone read that race bikes have hard suspension so everything was cranked up as tight as it could be.

Getting all scientific next ... have all the preload, rebound and compression settings but preload is first. It's arse is way in the air, it compresses front/back at different rates ... it's just a mess but on the way to getting better.

Just a heads-up for anyone thinking of a ride on Sunday, Hubba Gubba has organised a ride here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=59695 wich is calling at Rimutex at 10:30.

Nasty and I have a bike-sales appointment up SH1 so we can't be there ... but I did try and change the plans but couldn't get hold of the other party

Have fun, that's one ride I'd like to have done.

No, it used to have a big wooden sign "Jim's Corner" for that courier that died there.

Yeah I remember the sign, but you have no connection in any way to this then?

I also remember when there were picnic tables on that road to break out your thermos when you were driving over, but I guess these days you're likely to end up with a crash of some sort sharing your afternoon tea.

James Deuce
23rd November 2007, 17:02
Transit took it all away because it "Distracted Drivers". The dead Jim's family paid for the sign and a fair few picnic tables IIRC.

im looking at going for a little ride tomorrow Merv, gonna take my 11yr old out as pillion, where are you thinking about going?

I'd be happy to meet at Rimutex 10 for 10.30 departure as this thread is based on, then say cruise to Martinborough perhaps via Western lake Road then go out past the golf course on the back way to Gladstone then do the hillclimb road and end up in Masterton and see how we are going from there, perhaps swing by Carterton on the way back. We could talk further about it around 10 at Rimutex if you like. I haven't done much riding for a while been away too much so got to get back into it gently to avoid wrecking the body. Just did Paekak Hill today, funny how all the parts ache first time out - wrists and the like - must be getting old eh!

We could adjust to suit your 11 year old - and that would probably be enough for me anyway.

Just been over the hill today and it is in great condition because although it's nice and sunny the cool wind means there's no tar bleed.

Oil spills are another matter. Two bikes (or was it one bike and friend) down about 5 corners from the top Kaitoke side. It looks like the cruiser went down and ground off its side cover leaving a large patch of slippery stuff on the corner exit.

Trouble is I forgot all about it coming home and was on the hill with the whole thing to myself both up and down ... no more chicken strips ... sweeeet. Bloody glad they cleaned up that spill too {phew} :pinch:!
