The Cruisy Sunday Morning Ride.

Replacing our summer The Cruisy Wednesday Night Ride (TCWNR) until the return of Daylight Saving is a Cruisy Sunday ride to interesting places with interesting people. It's an excuse to go out and enjoy the sunday brunch lifestyle and to find pubs and cafes that we'd not normally bother with or to go back to old favourites.

Destinations previously ranged from Featherston, Martinborough, Lake Ferry, Carterton, Wellington city, Karori, Trentham, Paremata, Whitemans Valley and Paekakariki.

Groups meet at various locations like Caltex Kaiwhara, Pauatahanui Challenge, the Duck Pond and Haywards to head for the Final Assembly point at Caltex Rimutaka ("Rimutex") or any other place that the group has decided in the previous week might be a good idea, at 10:00am (As a result of this Poll) (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=48573), for a 10:30 departure.

Please Note: This ride is arranged in order to provide a local social riding event for the local KB riders which includes the smaller CC bikes and those who generally prefer slower paced rides.

This event works well by having the group remain as a group when in transit and by travelling at predominantly road legal speeds. We re-group often on these rides where the resulting chats and bike-spotting are often the best parts.

All KB riders and friends are welcome to attend this ride. However, should you struggle to slow to the group's easy going pace, we ask that you be considerate and stick with it so that it is inclusive of new and less adventurous riders.

All first timers are welcome. So feel free to tag along for an enjoyable social event.

Destination ideas are usually discussed in this forum with final determination being made by the group on the day. If we fancy a particular pub or cafe then we'll gauge numbers and can make a booking ... in which case that's where we go.

If the weather looks dodgy on any given Sunday, tune in to this thread for the group decision of go or no-go. See you there!

The Wellington Free Ambulance Charity Run is on this Sinday and that seems a fitting way to begin the TCSMR.

As winter encroaches - we would not be interested as we need to leave home 45 to 60 mins earlier to get to the bottom of the hill and appart from the Paekakareki hill bit - the motorway gets old fast on an ancient bike.

Seriously - you/we may need to think outside the box for winter rides, there is only so much coffee you can drink from the same old places after all.

Grub

From the discussion in the Poll's thread (which should now move here) it looks like we have a plan.

The concept behind these Welly rides is that the group can decide on the day but this particualr Sunday might be a bit different for most. The plan seems to be
- Rimutex 10am (top of hill and back?)
- 11:00am Ambulance (Fundraising) Ride from Maidstone Park Upper Hutt
- Finish Thorndon for BBQ and activities
- free to roam (Makara anyone?)

See y'all tomorrow

Grub

A few questions tonight at the party about times ....

We figure if we get to Rimutex bang on 10, there's time to get to the top of the hill and back (in the dry) and easily dawdlw along to Maidstone Park well before 11.

Seems to fit but is personal choice and a good idea if the dry weather turns up as predicted

Grub
29th April 2007, 09:10
Its turning out nice, roads look dampish but not wet so we're having a quick bite then off to Rimutex. At about 10:10 a blat up the hill and back for me I think and then off to the Ambo Ride

Excellent list Ceebie, that looks like a challenge ... can we do them all between now and daylight saving restart? :)

I also realised that I have perhaps been a little proscriptive in the opening post about the gathering point always being Rimutex. Wasn't really thinking that through at the time but as someone pointed out in the poll thread, why does it always have to be from the same place?

I guess the answer is ... it doesn't. It's whatever good ideas the group comes up with in the preceeding week that finds general favour.

I've edited the opening post accordingly.

IMHO, the starting point should always be the same place to avoid confusion (i.e., in case I miss a post saying this week we're meeting some place else). But I think we should start at the duck pond since that is more central than Rimutex.

Grub
30th April 2007, 13:14
Yup, the Duck Pond is definately more central but I'm guessing that it's a fact of Welly Biker Life that if we don't at least start near the Takas, many will not turn up and just go get their taka-fix on their own? It also means the Rapa crew can joins us ... or us join them.

hsvboy06
30th April 2007, 13:24
...which makes it sound a lot like that TCSMR will predominantly be going over the 'takas. Is that the intention?

I agree meeting at the duck pond is a good idea and as with the WNR we can choose direction from there, it was never a problem on a Wednesday and I don't see how on a Sunday morning .. in fact less vehicles are on the road then.

It also then gives other options than HAVING to do the takas ... I personally don't mind them but having travelled on them daily for a time get sick of the bloody trip and would like other things to do.

The memorial run could have started at 10 and had the benefit of the group to go with it as is the plan that we all agreed on. If Jim2 wants to go off and do something different, I guess we have to let him go

So who has a favourtie route they'd like to take us on?

I've had the Memorial Run up for 2 months. It was originally the 29th and I moved it to this weekend because of the Ambulance run. It's been up since before you put your cruisy ride up.

It's a memorial run. Could we show a little respect please?

What was said was not disrespectful NOR intended that way .. if taken that way ... well that is choice .. we have a lot of those .. the time of the ride was only shown in the calander until recently .. Its a big community which is growing ... I don't think that having two rides on the same day is a problem.

Very good .. I know that about the calander I read all the threads .. and really we need to grow up now ... a memorial ride is a good thing .. so take the time to remember your friend ... This is not a debate about anything .. nor a pisstake ...

Well to be fair ... when we left home and it said "light showers" which in reality was rain.

Four hardy KBers, made of sterner stuff - Nasty, Quallman1234, Hawkeye and The Grub all headed off to the Akatarawas ... because we could.

Well the weather at Rimutex was dryish but not much past the Akatarawa Cemetry it rained ... then we went into cloud ... it still rained, but just a very light fine one. The Reikorangi Cafe is a great place to stop for hot thick pumkin soup and coffee then home via SH1 and Grays Rd.

Cool day, great ride. It really isn't as bad as they say. You just go slow and take your time - it is an amazing part of the country

Oh, nearly forgot ... watch out for the 1km of pea metal just south of Reikorangi. It's easy to see, shouldn't catch anyone by surprise coming from the south at least since you're not going that fast anyway.

When we ran the Poll to select a time, I mindlessly said Rimutex ... for no particualr reason other than that's where we always seemed to start on a Sunday. A couple of people suggested th Duck Pond as being more central for going places other than the Takas.

At this stage it's a developing concept so we get to let it evolve how we want it.

I believe, in answer to your question, it is Rimutex by default at the moment but if someone has a cool idea for a ride destination which doesn't involve Rimutex, most people will go with that. I guess the idea is that we don't put too much mental strain on ourselves so early on a Sunday before we've had caffine and brunch

You forgot that there is petrol there without having another stop. Organising a start anywhere other than a petrol station, particularly in the weekend, means you'll be waiting at Rimutex (or some other distilled petroleum spirits emporium) while a good third of the group has an, "Oh yeah, petrol", moment.

The 1000RR pulled hard all the way despite the wind but I rounded one corner and was blasted by a cross wind that made the front tuck. I stayed upright but shudder to think how the 250 and 175 got on.

Hope the rest of youse made it home alright, aye?

I think we did... We all made it back over the 'takas at least. There was one corner (probably the same one that got you) where I was blown literally onto the other side of the road - I never really thought I'd come off but I shudder to think what might have happened if a car had been coming the other way. Scary.

Oh yeah, other highlights: (pick your favourite)

- Rounding a bend to find the road blocked for 500 metres with a flock of sheep.

- Escaped cows threatening to bolt across our paths

- Dodging blocks of firewood falling off the back of a ute

Yep, a real hum-dinger. Amazing we came out unscathed...

Was interesting, thanks for the ride even tho i wasnt really in the right frame of mind, i was thinking too much about my back wheel stepping out every turn!, and it made me make silly mistakes, wasnt too bad tho :).

My oh shit moment of the day was coming ride in to a corner overtaking the jeep with the trailer full of bikes on the back, then getting pushed by the wind right towards it, wasnt nice, i missed it tho.

Thanks for the ride, i need to fix my bike, thats my goal for the week haha.

Cheers

A bit of drama on the hill on the ride this morning,Grub put the new CBR600 down and under a fence near the top about 3 corners back from the top on the Hutt side.He was a bit shaken and bruised and was taken off by ambulance to be checked out. Bike looks a bit second hand though.

Been away for a littler while and missed out on all of the news. Just found out Grub dropped the old bike on Pikak a few weeks ago. Didn't know he'd got himself a new one. How much other news am I going to find when I fnally get through the 87 pages of new posts.

I saw the bike in the back of AJTurbo's van at the bucket racing, it looks okay really. It has a dented tank, scraped stator cover, and a cracked fairing. Other than that it's good.

Hi yall. Time to get back into the riding. For those of you city folks who wanna check the weather before headn out, here are two online weather stations which will give a good ingication of the weather in UH and in Gladstone in the Wairarapa. The Gladstone one has a webcam so you can have a look at what the sky is doin. Was a bit Brrrr over the rapa on sunday...took the missus for her first big ride over the tukkas and round the lake on the trusty fixxer 150. She just got her L the other week.

What about a big Sunday ride like the back road from Masterton to Pongaroa...or out to Ngawi or Cape Palliser...if anyone can get an all-day pass??

Sunday - Wainuiomata Coast
Nasty, Stevedee, Ducatijim, and I, had a hmmmm ticklelish ride out to the Wainuiomata Coast.

Hello to Ducatijim from Reporoa who fronted up at the Rimutex and asked 'Is this where the Kiwibikers meet?'

We gave the Rimutaka Hill a miss as things were a little doubtful with road conditions up there. Nasty suggested the Wainui Coast run. I had to reflect on the road out to Wainui Coast, I recall it would have been 12-14months when the new seal was put down, and now however the green lichen is quite rampant and things are a wee bit slippery out there. We had a good wobble here and there and enjoyed a coffee and a light meal back at the Buzz Cafe in Lower Hutt.

I would say beds are available .. but Grub is broken (means we only have a single at an reasonably accessible level with another double downstairs as he is in the queen spare at the mo) ... the ride sounds great. What about a BBQ or something like that on Saturday night .. again our place is free.

We went over the hill, bit misty at the top though, and went out to White Rock. Really neat ride through there, couple of slippy bits on the clay, but a good gravel road to ride. Hit some rain at Tuturumuri on the way back, but cleared up just past Martyborough.

The Transalp is just the bike for days that are a bit poopy like today.

Hey Buckbuck

I shot up this road yesterday. I think you were talking about it if dryish but not sure if you would have come over or not as it was dampish.

Road is a nice one. Nice and twisty all the way. I took it a bit easier as it was damp but still felt like I had plenty of grip. There are sections where it is a bit tighter, and there are some sections where it opens up a bit and you can see right through the corners and give it some more.

They have resealed parts of it, and there were a few bits that had a small amount of gravel left in the center of the lane. Like any small country back road, beware of driveways, stock on the side of the road and places where stock have crossed the road.

I went right through from Masterton to Pahiatua which was about 75km and took 45 min. To Eke you turn left at Alfredton rather than right, and the distance from Mstn to Eke is probably 65ish km so maybe 35-40ish mins

I might come on the ride next week, will see what I'm doing

They have resealed parts of it, and there were a few bits that had a small bit of gravel left in the center of the lane. Like any small country back road, beware of driveways, stock on the side of the road and places where stock have crossed the road.

I might come on the ride next week, will see what I'm doing

Thank you Kinje for the feedback. I am actually thinking that perhaps the direct route: Rimutex (rather than out to Martinborough on the way) make a coffee stop at Carterton - Wild Oats then onto Masterton - Alfredton - Eketahuna - returning back to Rimutex (with a detour on the way back Masterton to Martinborough for those who may want a longer ride.)

Reckon may have to nominate you as ride captain out of Carterton.

Good weather please.

Heads Up and Enjoy:yes: :scooter:  :scooter:

Kinje has since suggested we go out to Martinborough and middle road to Carterton therefore avoiding SH2.

Prudent to have a backup plan I suppose:

Weather report is cold and windy on Sunday.

Cold I expected but wind.........Shhhhh

Plan B:

TCSMR take it on the fly and may decide a ride on Wellington side if it too windy for the Rimutaka Hill and Wairarapa.

I'll also see if my dad is interested - he's just got back into riding after 9 years or so and just had an '98 Intruder 800 delivered so I'm sure he's itching for an excuse... ;)

Does she have a box of paper hankies on her desk? Carefully take the top one out, fill it with paper punch bits and refold it and put it back on top of the box.
Take some cream (toothpaste is good) and put it on the drawer handles.
Then sit back and watch. Tries to open drawer and then reaches for hankies to wipe hand. So funny....

If she still has a mouse with a ball, take the ball out. If infrared, put black tape over sensor of mouse. Change a couple of keys around on the keyboard. Sellotape the button under the phone receiver so that it doesn't stop ringing when she answers.

This week I have a proposal ... tell me what yall thinks:

Start Rimutex around 10 am
over hill and off to Caterton (aim 10.30 ish)... to Wild Oats ... sow a few and then ...

off to Palmerston North via a few interesting roads for Lunch.

Then one of two depending on whos there:

Back through the rapa (if heavy on rapa-ites)
done some of the straight roads if full of Wellingtonians ..

either or ... decision to be made at the time ...

Works for cruisy ride as those who wish a shortish ride and jaunt in the valleys get that ... and those who want to harden their arses get to do that ...
