Blimey, your house must be cold o' red haired one.

Umm VFR's. A previously minted white 1986 VFR 750 until some fucktard decided to make some fairing modifications with his car. It will be restored to its former glory as soon as I can extract the cash from the little bastard.

i'd love a cheap shit VFR.

I love my VFR it being the model VFR750FR of 1994 (which I think is also known by design model number RC36 but I think that applied to all VFRs from 1990 until the 800 came out). I bought it sight unseen when the model was launched overseas I just told Sawyers (Garry Winn at the time) get me one of those so I got probably the first one landed in NZ Feb 94 and 13 years later I have no regrets about buying it. It is fast and enjoyable to ride even two-up with Mrs merv on the back. You've seen stacks of my pics but here's that one I showed after it had been cleaned http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3205&d=1093676652 which I only do about twice a year but when I do I do it properly.

Big ups are it is smooth at any revs - doesn't lurch and jerk like a Ducati so will pootle along in 50k zones in as high as 4th gear - it has squirt when you want it, and it will do around 20km/l on 91 octane even at the pace I ride at giving it 350km until the fuel light comes on and a safe 400km on its 21 litre tank. Handling is neutral so it carves through corners - real racers would say its too low to the ground as it is easy to scrape the pegs especially two up and I scrape the collector box on left hand curves so have had to have the seam welded once already. So yes it is a sports tourer not a sprots bike but I don't want to do 300km/hr on the road anyway.

hmmm, how much would you pay for my nc30? It's gamgees old one. I'm thinking of selling. Since gamgee had it the fork oil has been changed, air filter, carbs cleaned. The oil is still fairly fresh since he had it, it can put the power down and the consumables are still all good. Always taken care of by me. no real difference between any of the nc30's/35's just the suspension got a little better.

yeah i thought the carbs needed to be cleaned, did it stop that little miss it had? not sure why you needed to change the fork oil seeing as it'd just been done, but did it make any difference? maybe you just needed to adjust the setup, as i'm quite light (60kg) I didn't really have the front setup too hard

NC21 and proud of it haha.....but id rather have a 750 or 800

got it a bit rough and have replaced rear passenger subframe to straighten it out, the radiator since it had been slightly wrapped around the frame (!!!???) and new left side fairing

still a bit worn but goes pretty well and handles nicely (just a bit small for me is the only problem) but i've been quite impressed with it (only had it for about 3.5 months)

Argh, all the good bikes are in Auckland and Dad won't let me get what I can't see

Anyway, if I were to convince him to get a bike unseen (I convinced him to get a loan for me from the bank), would someone reliable with a bit of know-how on either bikes in general or NC30's specifically be able to take a look at it? Also, how much would a new regulator and head bearings cost? Is head bearings something I could do or do they have to be pressed in by a shop?

shopped around for my reg/rectifier and found that Red Barrons were the cheapest ($150? from memory). The rectifier has the heat sink built in to the housing.
Head bearings are easy to do, you wont need a press, just a bit of spare time.

Sure thing, give me a PM if you find one you want looked at.

I got a set of head bearings recently that cost $120 (trade) and were highly recommended by a experienced & trusted bike mechanic who did his apprenticeship on these things when they first came out. He's now given in his job but will still do casual work - I will be getting him to set up my carbs shortly as the fuelling's not right.
Anyway, the head bearings were quite a bit of faffing about. Not as bad as the wheel bearings though. Putting the outer races and the triple tree in the fridge for a few hours helped with putting the new bearings on.

the carbs weren't very dirty. the fork oil needed changing, trust me i don't know who did it for you or if you did it yourself but it looked like it was years old and had the viscosity of water and with the steering head bearings being loose it made it unsafe to ride. The forks are setup as they are with only preload adjustment...? so there is not much to be adjusted. Goes great now though!

For anyone else I might be willing to part with it for $3500-$4000? It isn't really too realistic for me to keep this in my current situation.

You punk :p 2 smokers are cool

I'll ask Dad if he's ok with someone else looking at it rather than himself. He might only accept a mechanic looking at it but might be able to get away with someone who knows the model of bike. And I've yet to see those photos of the RVF I've got word of that's within my price range

Were these trademe ones specifically for the VFR or generic ones that were the right size?

Ok. I'd ring around the wreckers first but I'm sure Sawyers here would be about the same as Red Baron

So looks like that VFR needs another $500 spent on it. $4000 overall seems reasonable

That cheap black one on Trademe and an RVF that a Kiwibiker that will remain unknown for now that knows a guy who has it. I'm more keen on the RVF despite being the most expensive and at the limit of my budget, and as far as I know I'm the only one interested in it so I've got more time to think about it once I see photos. The VFR on Trademe however has a lot of interest and is so cheap that the first person who sees it is likely to buy. More_fasterer has kindly offered to take a look for me. Chances are I'll have only a breif moment to decide on it when he sees it and gives me a text saying his opinion on condition whether to buy it straight then or pass

Associate membership... I like this idea. Perhaps available to those who have placed bids in an auction to obtain the nirvana of motorcycling... a VFR!
This proposition will be discussed at committee level.

Good to see that Marks bike is being assembled at the moment!

Associate membership to those who demonstrate an active pursuit to ownership. Full membership to owners. Can't be fairer than that. We do not intend to be "snobs", merely supporting the marque and doing our best to perpetuate the wonderous VFR machine.

That sounds better. Much in the same way as someone who likes bikes isn't yet a biker untill they ride

Still waiting eagerly for those photos I'm meant to be getting of that RVF. Just wondering if you think this is a good deal: 1995 RVF400, 46000km's, needs some plastic welding and new paint, left footpeg bent in (think I can fix that easily, do it all the time on the RG), had the ignition pulled out when it was stolen (and recovered, this isn't a stolen bike :p) and theres some other broken parts but seller has replacements ready to be installed so everything is there, it needs re-vinning, and a reputable member of Kiwibiker test rode it and thinks it's sweet. I've been told the seller wants around $5000 but haven't had a price confirmed

Will tootle off and have a squizz on tardme at it.(it IS on tardme???)

I bought my bike sight unseen off of tardme. Just phoned a local (to the seller) bikeshop and asked them to do an appraisal on it. They couldn't find any faults.
Reg/rec, and battery clapped out shortly after I bought it, but things are difficult to diagnose and we all take a chance when purchasing older machines.
Hopefully it will all work out in the end for you.

theres a company that does it "biketranz" from memory, i think it would be like 150 bucks ish? they stick it in a truck, all they do is ship bikes, so the truck has all the tie down points etc.

ring them up for a price.

yeah i've talked to them before but they quoted me $340 for dunedin to palmy and this is even further so it'd be pushing $400 i think....probably no more expensive to fly down and ride it back including gas and ferry ticket

yeah but invergiggle to palmy....good ride....very good ride, although might get a bit damp. i got rellies in chch if the crap hit the fan too

i moved from chch to auckland back in 94 and flew back down to bring my GPz900R up....THAT was a farkin good ride

it rained from Kaikoura to Wellington which was a bit of a bummer, found a cheap motel in Levin to park up for the night, then had a ripping day in the sun from Levin to Aucks...awesome ride

I did once they were sold!

My parents don't want me getting another project. Took a while to convince them to get me the loan for a 3rd bike. The realised they'd rather have a say in what I can get now than when I'm 18 I go out and buy a turbo'd ZX14 and start pushin to pay for it :p

I'm a prospective member and dead keen on getting an NC30/35. Just matter of finding a good one for under 5k.

I'm in exactly the same position. A beauty of an NC30 was on TradeMe and in Christchurch pretty much the same time as I got back from England (couple of weeks ago). I had it on my watchlist and it didn't meet the reserve. Couple of days later I had an email saying the seller was offering it at a fixed price - $3400. I justabout had a seisure, thought frantically for a bit, and then decided to accept the offer and buy it. But some fucker beat me to it - I nearly cried! :( But I'll be back. NC30 / NC35 for me is very high up the consideration list. Bloody restricted licence... :angry2:

Yeah, spotted the link in his signature. Nice looking bike - I'd like a closer look if it were in Christchurch. If I was to be brutally honest though, I consider it to be a touch more money than I want to spend on an NC30. Have seen stock looking examples in apparantly good nick go for under $4k before. the do sound awesome dont they

my old horse isn't the tidiest but it aint bad and i bought it of trade me without ever riding it or even hearing what the V4s sounded like. Needless to say, when i picked her up and started her for the first time...i was in wow land....i dont think its a stock exhaust (but i could be wrong) but i just didnt expect such an impressive growl from a lil ol' 400!!

i reckon it sounds the best when you start winding her on in 2nd as you come out of a corner, from about 3thou up to about 10 it just sounds awesome (*sniff* i wish i could share it with you all)

i bought it to get back into biking and because it was cheap...i kinda had a plan to find another GPz900R like I had a few moons back, but now im definitely on the prowl for a VFR750 (with an aftermarket exhaust of course)

If you want a 750, the best is spozed to be the 4th Generation (94-97). It's the one with the NACA ducts on the sides of the fairing. I think there was one for sale on KB recently.
I almost bought a 700, but ended up with a Granite Blue Metallic (looks black, but has blue metallic flakes in the paint) 3rd gen (90-93) ex-Japan model.

You've got to watch that.
My wife (and the salesman) pushed me into buying my VFR when we were out window-shopping for a helmet for the wife.
Yeah, I *know* it sounds pathetic, but I felt like I was being pressured a bit, and wanted to go away and think about it. I'm not sorry I bought the VFR, as I love V-twins and v-fours (I've owned 4 now), but I ended up being ripped off: paid a bit much, didn't haggle over things that needed doing, and got bugger all for my trade-in.

well, i ventured out to try new helmets on today but got sidetracked at Phil Turnbull by the 2000 VFR800 (http://motorcycletrader.co.nz/DesktopDefault.aspx?UsedBikeID=2361936&TabID=3553&Alias=motorcycletradernz) they have (i think it had about 60km on it)

i jumped on just get a feel for the position and the weight and i was blown away by how light it felt just sitting in the shop!! it barely felt any heavier than my old 400, and just the right position too....

I got a left footpeg for a 400. Came off my 750 but I got tired of riding side saddle with different pegs so I bought a new one.

Or maybe I'll keep the footpeg and swap the 750 for a 400 then I can have the 400 and the 800 instead.

More decisions...I'm getting a head ache here.

I was a member of this exalted company for a mere few weeks, when I had a VF500 and VFR750. The vifferbabe was not amused. :nono:
The VF had to live on the front deck, under a bike cover.

Hmmm... so I did.
I'm not sure; she likes riding now, but she introduced some strange ChickLogic that because I have indulged in some unauthorised improvements to the VFR, it's no longer OUR bike.

I dunno how that works. Mebbe it's just because I didn't say, "Sweetie, I'm thinking of consigning the DumboEaredConfirminators to the bowels of the cupboard, and installing some sexier ones. What say you?"
Or that she thought I should leave "improvements" to the 'experts'.

Then there was the previous farkling I neglected to consult with her on (they were improvements - what was there to discuss??): gargre door opener, new fusebox, speedocorrector, Fiamm horns, brakelight flasher, PAIR valve disablement, Unifilter, oxygen sensor eliminators, lower gearing, etc etc etc....

"You said this bike wouldn't need anything done to it!" :nono:
"Uh..yeah...well... they're all improvements, and most of them are reversible..."

Love the 400's bro, only the Hondas tho. I couldnt ask anything more of the vfr except for it to look better and newer - hence the rvf.

I noticed when test riding, and read it on the net, that the rvf actually has less power due to a change in japanese legislation at the time - whereas the vfr was 59hp, the rvf was only made to 53hp. Im not fussed tho. still goes like stink :)

On TYGA after kitting both bikes out with their performance gear the RVF was making 3hp extra. Not sure if they were european models though. What is the restriction that reduces it anyway? Just ask Shuan what he does to his bikes to get more power out of them, I will :p

I checked out a NC24 from the Trade and Exchange. It was nice but I just like the look of the VFR/RVF more. Logically I should go for this one cause it's cheaper, but my heart is set on the NC35 that I haven't got any closer to buying yet. It needs a VIN and it's at the top of my budget already and will need more money on top of that but it's just so cool.

By the way, Dad said possibly (though he hasn't spoken with MUM yet) we might be able to bump up the budget to 6000. I'm not too keen on the idea as it'll force me into getting a second job rather than I get one if I feel I need more money, but it does make getting the RVF more realistic as I have a bit of cash to sort out any kinks.

Haha, I was telling my Dad earlier I may be more interested if it was around that price. Only problem is the paintjob is rubbish :bleh: (j/k)

Actually the only real problem I have with it is the k's are getting up there. I don't know when VFR's tend to suffer from the high k's an require a rebuild and I know they go around the clock but it's still more than I wanted. "When do VFR's die"?

Yeah - well I haven't ridden it enough to find out. At the moment I have the carbs off and have reset the floats and given them a clean. Now have to stick them back on and go and get it recomplianced. I can then ride it and see if I like it as much as I did originally. Then I have to paint and install the L/hand fairing(there is a reason why the photo is of the right hand side):shit:

Anyway for me the pre-Vtec 800 floats my boat. Stuck a Power Commander II on the 800 at the weekend (are you there Ian?) and it seems to run a lot smoother. If I can ever get on top of the other work I can maybe do a few more jobs(Scottoiler,Pair valves, plugs) and get a decent dyno tune:rockon:

Never made it to "sign the Flaf"

There's some really exciting ones that make the FI light flash and the bike behave like a real bastid. Strangely, the ones that looked closest to my bike's setup were the worst, but the Urpeen ones seemed good.

Bit too "clockwork" the later ones...plus they got less power and more weight. Mine is still cosmetically damaged since a local f$ckwit pulled out infront of me in Feb. Motivating myself to get the forks done and get it WOF'd again. Must ask witness to accident to send letter again so I can take the f$ckwit to small claims court.

Now the real question is why can't honda make a CBR with a viffer motor in it? A modern VFR1000, yum.

Having owned a '90 VFR750 and my current bike, the later one is better. Or do you mean 'clockwork' = lacking character? Perhaps, but I think not.
Still, the 2nd gen (86-89) VFR is supposedly the most sporty of the VFR750s, being lighter and more nimble than the later ones.

Now the real question is why can't honda make a CBR with a viffer motor in it? A modern VFR1000, yum.
That's an excellent question, Dude!
I guess the RC30 and RC45 came close. It's a piss-off that the VFR has second-class brakes and suspension, given its sporting heritage (the VFs/VFRs of the 80s), its cost, and the fact that Honda has used it as a technology flagship for so long.

One thing is likely: given the fact Honda has abandoned its 4-year model revamp of the VFR for the last few years, they're either abandoning the VFR altogether and just doing a model run-out (like with the VTR1000 and Blackbird), or they're developing something big. Hopefully the MotoGP bikes now being 800cc V4s augurs well for the future....

yes - very smooth. Just plugged it in and fired her up. Did not get to run it at weekend but it sure felt a lot smoother on the run to work this morning. Was a bit worried that it might be too lean somewhere and make the hard bits go runny in spots but it seems a lot nicer to ride. What was the map that you loaded?

lets see if we can orgnise a ride over one of the next weekends - no need to go too far (don't have a lot of spare time anyway). Might ring you tonight and sign the Flaf.

Any other VFR listers on VFR Discussion want to "Sign the Flaf" better do it soon before it moves on round the world.

pre V-tecs are Ok...at least the cams are gear driven and not chains. You want a CBR with a VFR motor then maybe the Frankenviffer (VFR800 with SP2 front end and brakes) would do it. Ok its not a 1000cc but by all accounts a well ridden one will hang with a CBR in the twisties. Need more ccs then Dynamo Humm do a big bore for the 800. Just need pots of gold to do it:yes:

Can't remember.
I think it was one with an Arrow pipe. I can't remember if I left it as it was, or edited it a bit after trying several of the maps and learning what worked / didn't work.
The download maps are OK, but can be improved by adding some fuel at the very bottom end (low revs and throttle openings). I also found that Mr Honda has cocked up the fueling just before/after the flapper valve on the airbox opens (at 5200rpm if I recall) by adding too much fuel, so you can make things smoother by leaning it there (which I think might already be done on your map).
I also had a play on a couple of maps with advancing the ignition and adding fuel at the upper end, so it has a prolonged kick rather than running out of puff (if you're running on high-octane, like BP Ultimate). But you never ride there, right? :innocent:

Yeah.. with the added bonus of RC's appreciating in value, and Blade's decreasing at a rapid rate..... DOH!!!

And, it actually wasn't that bad to ride..... very very very smooth.... Blade was just faster....

Never mind.... I've built a very high spec nc30 now, so that'll have to do me...:Punk:

I've just finalised loan details, got a shipping quote, sorting out safetrader details tonight and hopefully I'll be sending the money across tomorrow, up to biketranz to how soon I get it. Sorry man, thought I had missed out on your bike, good luck selling

VIR reports are very handy if you're a bit dubious about a vehicles history - gives all previous owners, all recorded mileages at wof time etc, rego changes, all the fruit
unfortunately there $25 a pop...but worth it if you're spending a few k on a vehicle

Neither would I but the loan is under my parents name (since I'm under 18) and my parents are very paranoid of things going wrong. I feel a bit cruel saying I'd like to work through safetrader cause I'm basically saying I don't trust the guy

As for VIR's, it was a good job I got one for the first VFR I was interested in cause I found it it went around the clock (then the seller made the excuse that he swapped the engine), the second one for Morcs bike came clean and so too with the bike I'm getting now. However, it's expensive for information that should be freely available and that banks can check themselves for free and banks generally have a lot more money than the average public

I Sold my nc30 this morning.

I ended up settling for less than i wanted, but all the sale groundwork was done and just couldnt be arsed going through doing the advertising, viewing, blah blah all over again.

Apparently the cams were loose because the load that the cam gear puts on the shafts and is apparently quite a mission to fix (what isnt on an nc30 lol)

The dude offered 3200 which i rejected initially, apparently cyclespot said even that was too much - funny that, considering i bought the same bike in rough-as condition from them just 3 months previous for 4000...

But anyways, cheers George, hope to see you on the road soon.

Funny that, dealer double standards. Offering $3200 is a bit like saying 'you're a f**king c**t', offensive. Angers me like hell

Well done selling the bike off, enjoy the RVF :D

Still waiting on my VFR to get here. Had to wait for the payment to get through to safetrader, then have to wait till tomorrow for biketranz to pick the bike up and I don't know how long it'll take to get here but it will be to my door at least.

Well I'm George, and I bought Morc's NC30.

What the bike shop told me is that the V4 engines are prone to the camshaft seat's wearing because of the pressure the cam gears put on the shafts as they're spring loaded.

To be honest the engine does make a lot of noise when its warmed up, and I'm going to have to strip it down to find out exactly what is going on, as opposed to buying a bike I could just jump on and ride straight away. Theres also a lot of work to be done with cleaning up and repainting the fairings and sidecovers etc, so my offer was based purely on the amount of work to be done, compared to buying one which didn't require any work at all.

Don't think I'm going to be riding much until I've got it 100% though, but I'm happy to have a bike again, and happy its another VFR, although I may need to look at getting it a bit faster. I had an NC21 before (VFR 400Z) which did seem to have a lot more power, and even Folcan's (my little brother) NC24 seems to go a bit better. Might just be the cams though, so we'll see. Can't have my kid brother having a faster bike than me !!! :)

Thanks again. I know I'm a fussy buyer.

Chrislost
24th May 2007, 17:03
blah on the rattley cams, it is a engine out and back in to fix it.
However everyone ive asked says it dosnt matter,
aparently theres a split cog that keeps load on the cams to stop them rattling, also for race motors it seems that the done thing is to remove this cog. only rattles at low revs (like idle).
so if the VFR your looking at has done ~50+ kms and idling is set to 2k might pay to check it out(unless you dont care about rattles)

gt_phanta
25th May 2007, 09:03
Thanks for that, I will.

As for the 400z, yes this is the naked one. 1986 model, with 64hp (according to some website I looked it up on when I had mine).

Annoying how these bikes are so damn expensive here. The bike shops are making a killing importing and selling them.

I bought my nc21 for R8000.00 in 2003. It had 36000kms on the clock and would have been about NZ$1500 at the time. This was from a bike shop that brought it in from Japan.

Now you can buy NC30's with 20000kms in SA for R15 000 (about NZ$3000) also from bike shops, so I really don't know why these bikes are so damn expensive here.

NC35's go for R25000 ($5000) for a perfect one.

Hey whats with it saying I'm a L(oser) Plater under my name?
I'm on a full license !! haha.

Hmmmm.... maybe. But the springs are only lightweight, and only there to take some play out of the scissor gears and thereby reduce noise. You *can* take them out.

I had an NC21 before (VFR 400Z) which did seem to have a lot more power, and even Folcan's (my little brother) NC24 seems to go a bit better.
Some of the models are restricted, and there are differences between them as far as valve timing, carbs, exhaust header diameters, etc.

Supply and demand. There are a lot of people getting into bikes now, and the VFR400s are one of the better bikes for bikers to get into once they're ready to step up from a 250.

Hi, crynsie! :wavey:
Welcome to KiwiBiker! :spudwave:
Nice VFR - is it from Red Baron (red sticker on lower fork leg)?
I bought my '90 VFR750 from Red baron, who were selling it on behalf of the owner for WAY too much. It was nowhere near as tidy as yours, and was also a Jap import (but not a restricted version).

That's a very uncommon paintjob on yours - really stands out from some of the other colours like the Italian Red.

The bike has been serviced at Red Baron, which is where it got the sticker from.
She needs a bit of work coming up (service, pads, tyres etc)
Where is the best place to go?
I was thinking of taking it back to RB as they have the service history etc, but if there is a better place, I would love to know.

Hello all,

Before you all abuse me for being in the wrong thread, have a look at my profile. It isn't a mistake........:dodge:

I decided that I could not afford to get ANY speeding fines or demerits and besides the R1 isn't the most comfortable bike to ride any longer than an hour at a time. So after doing a bit of research and talking to various people I settled on a VFR800. Took one out for a test ride and didn't want to take it back to the shop.

So here I am now. I traded the 06 R1 on a 07 VFR800 with only 3300kms. There is 4 good things about this bike.

1. Not buying new so the bike has already lost it's 'Out the door' price.
2. Bike was purchased by first owner and was run-in doing the Southern Cross ride - couldn't ask for a better way for it to be broken in.
3. 1st owner installed a packrack and a cig lighter (must of had heated vest)
4. Bike is black with a silver pearl/metallic paint job. Didn't like the look of the Crimson or the new 08 colour - silver. Only thing is black is a bitch to keep clean and you REALLY notice the scratches and swirl marks.

I will try to post some more piccys up as I get time to take some.

So when is there going to be the big VFR club ride???

vifferman
28th October 2007, 12:47
Congratulations, Qkchk! :niceone: Luvleee bike! Good choice of colour!
My last VFR was black, and I found it OK to keep clean - apart from the white (!) wheels, so I stripped'n'polished 'em.

I am not too sure about the comment about not getting any tickets though... The VFR will allow you to travel MUCH further (in comfort) at speeds that will allow you to accumulate demerits at an alarming rate!

Bloody nice! (We will have to meet up at some point for a "mirror image" photo shoot...

What's the VFR like compared to the R1? Is the suspension and handling better or worse? Is the power a let down or is it plenty quick to still have fun on? I've often thought about getting a sports tourer, especially the newer VFR, but I'm always drawn towards the ultimate power and styling of the latest sportsbikes (a habit I'm trying to break cause I can see it costing a lot of money I don't have).

Other than the tri colour paint job, what does the interceptor have over the standard VFR?
