if some member of my own family did this exact same thing, i would not want the pity of strangers. hes a murderer, plain and simple, and i would seek to distance myself from their name as best as possible.
MATE!........ family is family, do you actually have any?
I'd stick to my family through thick and thin!
Blood is thicker than water!.
Would never abandon my family, ashamed you live in Wanganui.

Many chapels have in-house floral deals, just ring, give a credit card number and state your verse. It'll get passed on.

make much bigger sentences availiable to the judges and previous history becomes a multiplier. Cause an accident and you are proven DIC = penalty X, cause the same accident proven DIC with a history of similar acts and penalty = X2 right up to life...
Everyone deserves a second chance - but a third, 4th etc
Firstly, This wasn't an accident and we all must feel a little responsible for not putting enough pressure on the powers that be! We fire off when it happens but overall we tolerate it. Its not the cops fault, as a society we do live in a democracy.
Seems the above Quote makes good sense. Doesn't this put a reoffending drunks future in his own hands.
If this was the law, wouldn't "youngatarts" sad story solved itself by his own actions, he'd have to face his problem and get help or ROT in Jail. He couldn't blame her for it. Either way wouldn't she have been better off! Sooner or later no matter how much of a loser you are you'd have to face up. It wouldn't change policing we just need a law change.
You can't argue with "sorry mate but it was your decision" your sentence is.????????? My opinion only!!
Secondly I'm in no position to pass comment on the offenders family and some of the comments here I imagine have been driven by anger. I have a brother inlaw that likes a drink or two! He's a nice guy, and single now. But there is no way he would dare take my kids in his car drunk. And he knows it. My wife would never ever take them there again and the shit he'd from the rest of the family would be loud and last many years. He simply wouldn't do it, Its a strong family, but they still can't stop him driving home from the pub on his own now and then! I'm pretty damn sure if the above quote was law he'd still have a wife and a life or be off the streets.
Thirdly, Its time to put up or shut up and send a card or whatever with the funeral being 2morrow. Its a big pity it wasn't in the weekend as I think there would be quite a few bikes there to pay their respects. But the family may want a quiet time.
So my(our) thoughts are with them on this sad day. Hopefully the 3 bikers are touring around on their dream bikes in the heavens!!!!!
RIP

What I was thinking. Send a card or whatever by all means but a crowd of total strangers on bikes descending on their funerals may not necessarily go down very well.
Combined service for Simon Short and Toni Dommerholt-Purchase is at:
Blue Chip Stadium (Bay Park Speedway)
Truman Road
Mt Maunganui
Friday, May 4, 11:00am
In lieu of flowers, donations to SPCA can be left at stadium.

Thankyou Shadows, That is also the feeling of the families,
Many of their biker friends will not be riding to the funeral & to show up on your bike as a complete unknown is not what is wanted.
Thankyou.

yeh, i do. but as far as blood goes... we dont share any of it. my family is that... but only on paper. any furthur than that and im a lone wolf. my friends make my family.
the things my brother has done [i wont list them here... would detract from the thread] has given me enough to reason to disown him. i see him in the street, i walk past without a second glance. hes been told not to come into my work while im on shift.
family is not just blood, festus. my true family are, unfortunatly, in canada. i would much rather be there than here. again... no relation to any of them, but the bond is there, and very strong.
would really stick by someone who murdered someone else? what if that person murdered your best friend? all claims of sticking by have to end somewhere. as i said... anything like that done by a member of my family would see them outcast, and their name not connected with me. whether i have to leave or they do, we would no longer be connected.
btw... im ashamed to live here too....

Yep I agree. My friendships get the same loyalty from me as blood
does. I was brought up to be unconditional and non judgemental with who I choose to have in my life.
I have been fortunate with my own blood family
As for blood family - I have seen some horrible things that blood family do to eachother...IMHO, i'm unsure blood should have automatic rights.
Anyway sorry...i'm off topic...again

For those of you with broadband or patience.
The TV3 report on the funeral is on their site and well worth watching

The widow of (I'm guessing) the solo rider plans a campaign. I support that..

Yes I saw the report on TV3 tonight. They showed the bikes up close including the "Moto Guzzi" on the tanks. It gave me a big lump in my throat.
I'm sure you thought the same thing, Paul.

Hey Paul in NZ, did you catch what the focus of the campaign will be at all if this is right (early days to have formulated plans) - sometimes media put words in your mouth and lead you to say stuff to help make the story......
I just ask as Megan McPherson of the sensible sentencing trust who lost her brother to a multiple offender, already has a 3 strikes and you're out (disqualified forever) campaign going.

Ok, if a policeman pulls a guy over on a tuesday afternoon at 2pm for doing 111kmh, its very likely the guy was just speeding and is sober. But dont you think pulling over a car 8am on a sunday morning for a doing 111kmh is going to more likely have a drunk driver in it than pulling a car over randomly at 100kmh? Get my point? Well i get my own point, lol.
Lost count of the 2pm afternoon speedster who was drunk, and on some occasions, disqualified too... had another one just last month in fact...

we're not in the book either, for good reason.
while i dont and wont have kids, i know damn sure if i ever did have any, i wouldnt let them near anyone like the jerk off who caused this.
its like the drunk father who fell asleep at the gas station... following weeks paper screams that hes "a good father" [or so his wife says]
there needs to be something done, and soon. have cops stationed at every bar. car keys get handed in as you enter, and you get a slip of paper with numbers on [like a locker combination] end of the night, you bring the slip to the bar, cops breath test you. under, you get your keys. over, you get a lift home. [cops also use their own judgement, as alcohol affects people different. what may be legal for you may be well well over for me.] keys go with the cops, who either give them to you at home, of you have to pick up from the station the next day.
the downside of this, is bars will have to have parking where remaining vehicles can be locked in.

Nah - just what was on the report. I'd certainly not pile all over this as it's very likely everyone will be a bit raw about it for some time. I just mentioned it because we should keep it front of mind and IF (big if) the lady in question decides to do something then I'd certainly support it. What I would not do is use her grief for my own rowboat....
It was i thought a pretty decent report and well done TV3....
I hope the guy was not drunk but..... I dunno...

Missed it and my comp won't play the item from 3's website but they are good on this kind of thing. Not thinking of 'piling onto it' at all, just genuinely surprised that talking of a campaign is someones response at such a very early stage - perhaps being bikers those affected are already more aware of the major issues than most - for most it is a big learning curve after losing to the toll. I guess it might be an MC focus....or DUI considered, if anything. Wouldn't have needed to ask if I could see the dang news article and get the drift .

I hope Gordon Armstrong burns in hell for this..... It makes chilling reading.
Police said today blood test results showed Armstrong's blood alcohol level four hours after the crash was 92mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal driving limit is 80mg.
Senior Sergeant Ed van den Broek, of Rotorua's road policing unit, said he was surprised at the high reading, given the time that had elapsed between the accident and the sample being taken.
He said the delay was due to the emergency treatment Armstrong received immediately after the accident. The treatment included Armstrong being given blood to replace what he had lost because of his injuries.
"This would have diluted the blood sample even further," Mr van den Broek said. (from the Stuff report.)

Really sad to hear that three riders had to go due to mindless stupidity but did anyone really expect any different? I was half hoping for the drivers families sake that he'd had a heartattack or something (at least then they wouldn't have as hard a time dealing with it) but not at all suprised with the result.

Really sad to hear that three riders had to go due to mindless stupidity...
Mindless stupidity it was not - he had several convictions and knew the law and the risks - it was therefore nothing less than pre meditated murder.
That is how some countries see such offending - we are just backward and don't believe in personal responsibility

Cheers candor; disqualified, pissed, kids in the car, three innocent bikers dead.
That scumbag deserves no more respect after death than he would have got from me in life.
Those bikers were all someone's children and if they'd been mine, well, you get the picture..................
