:Punk: Being a member of RAT NZ we tend to ride with TRIUMPHS only as do the Hogs...... Company loyalty etc
I presume that the Italian makes do as well???
Do any Jap bike rider take offence at this or do the have like Suzuki only rides???:scooter:

Yeah they do - Honda has one - Suzuki do track days and stuff.

Ducati certainly organise some big ones as do other Eurpean makes. Honda is also well represented. Not sure about other Jappa brands.
Personally, I have never seen the point. I would rather choose the people that I ride with than qualify them by what they ride.

yeah, it all seems a little separatist and kinda pointless really - i'd rather just ride with whoever wanted to come along, idiots notwithstanding.

i snuck along on a bears ride once(my flatmate had a sportster, his mate had bonnie), on a HONDA...and even worse, a 2 STROKE!! hahaha i got hassled but i give as good as i get and the bike made it out in one piece so all good

Well if you belong to the RAT NZ club you expect that only RAT bikes turn up, same with HOG club,

There are honda track days (open to anyone), suzuki track days(suzuki only)

But the japan 4 don't really have there own brand rides, that i hear off.

Track days i understand since its often the company helping foot the bill for the track and rather have people that have there brand of machine. and if you are in a club for a certain type of bike, you only expect those bikes or members of that club to go ride.

Some people may take offence to that, but no matter what you do someone will be offended by it somewhere some how

Very true.
In this case, I don't see it as an "offence" thing. After all, we are all of us, free to organise almost any common interest group that we choose, which is how it should be.
It's just not to my taste.

There's the Moto Guzzi only rallies in alternating North and South Island every Labour Weekend called the Rattley Tappets (correct me if I'm wrong). So I presume you'd see only Guzzi's riding in that vicinity :)

Common interest. Solid ground for building friendshups. Camaraderie.
And a whole lot less folks you will find offencive telling you how much better their bike is - no matter what old dunger it is.

Fair enough - whatever rattles your chain. However, I've never had anyone give me a hard time about what I ride. That may be because I've never given anyone else crap about what they ride either. I even trade bikes with those I trust, to find out how the other half lives.
I do have a soft spot for old dungers.
I have fond memories of taking an old Indian for a blast in Blenheim years ago.
Left hand - throttle and gear change
Right hand - spark advance/retard
Left foot - clutch
Right foot - brake (sort of)
Got the hang of it in about 3 minutes - great fun

No dungers for dave. Strictly a modernist. I've tried doing tests on veteran and vintage bikes for Kiwi Rider. All I like doing now is looking at them.

Can you fix the bad speeling of camaraderie in the quote please? Wasn't watching.

Tis done.
Learning to ride elderly machinery is one thing - testing it would be something quite different and difficult to boot. Unless you did it all the time, you would have no frame of reference from which to make a judgement and would just manage to piss off the multitudes.
Topic now thoroughly vacated.

When I brought my new Triumph I was automatically made a member of the RAT outfit I think. I keep getting sent stuff in the mail.
Been meaning to contact someone locally and see what they get up to.
I think they have regular rides etc.

I kinda like riding with all makes, nothing like variety, in people and bikes.

Some of the best weekends I've ever had were at RAT events. I've had some great times and still go. Just not to every one any more. Riding habbits and bikes have changed over the last 7 years.

I'm going through a phase now where i largely prefer riding on my own. Dicking with my cameras and stuff if I want to. But I'll catch you at a rat event sometime. Consider it an instruction.

Someone told me that the Goldwing owners club won't let Valkyries ride along with them.

Which is completely pathetic (if true).

Big Dave
4th May 2007, 15:13
The RATs let anyone along - except to 2 events annually that the factory sponsors.

And thats mainly because they give away quite a lot of valuable gear and chuck money on the bar at dinner and they want to ensure that Triumph owners get it.

There are no exclusions on a day ride unless you behave like a c**k. And then it won't matter what you are on.

There's a ride leaving Ashurst Mobil at 10am tomorrow. We don't give a stuff who/what rides with us. Yes that includes Hinckley Triumphs. As long us you have moderate people skills, (something I lack btw) and don't mind getting the piss taken at you'll fit in fine.

Just curious. Do those that go on RAT rides need to learn a secret handshake or sommit?

That Thruxton sure is a great looking machine, but why did they put the 270 crank in it rather than the 360. I would have thought that the latter would be more in keep with the older models sound and feel, rather than giving it a Ducati-esque sound.
The tests I've read on the Thruxton haven't been that complimentary either unfortunately, when compared to the Ducati 1000 etc.

I tend to ignore bike reveiws now days. Basicly if you like it, buy it and ride it. Hell, if you don't like it ride it. It may grow on you over time ;). The Triumph air cooled parrallel twin line fills a gap that had been missing in the general international motorcycling line up for quite a while. One that the Kwaka W650 kicked off.

But made sense to this old grey matter !!Looking at the UK Triumph site ( http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/6194.aspx ) the Thruxton, Bonneville and Bonneville T100 are listed as having a 360 degree crank whereas the America, Scambler and Speedmasters have a 270 degree layout.

Arhhhh a true classic.

I've been to a couple of Guzzi rallies and never on a Guzzi, Haven't got out of the closet yet. Most of them still talk to you if you don't have one. Just gotta talk a lot about Guzzi stuff.

I guess they are quite helpful in a general sort of way. But you don"t really get to know your new steed until it's done a couple thousand k's.
Case in point : 06 Srambler. Great fun on the test ride, which made it easy for me to pass over the dosh. Slowly now I'm doing the few little mods that Triumph could of done in the first place. But everything is built to a price.
Best mod so far? Ditching the standard shocks and getting Mr Taylor to work his magic with Ohlins. Fork springs and emulators rounded the suspension out nicely.
Totally different bike now. Off road and on.:Punk:
It's all part of the beautiful mystery that is motorcycling.

No.no offence taken.it's great that all the rats and hogs ride together......if only we could get all the 65+ old fucks who wear hats and can't drive for shit, and the remuera women's 4wd(road use only-any dirt on it and you get chucked out of the club)association(they are blind etc)to all drive together, then all the lance armstrong wanabes(you know the type....ride 2 metres off the kerb, run red lights, don't give way at intersections etc etc)we'd pretty much have all the fuckwits and fags out together!
only kidding......................we love you guys!............no offence!
