View Full Version : High rpm knocking - rgv

Went for a long-ish ride today and had this weird knocking happening when getting onto the throttle at corner exits... and the same on the way home just now.

Kind of feels like running over a rock or (knock on wood) rear wheel momentarily locking and sounds akin to dropping 7thou rpm onto first gear... it doesn't happen every time I near the red line but enough to cause concern.... (in particular, leaning through and having a hammer like knock twice on the way to 11thou rpm from around 7 underneath you is disconcerting)...

Any ideas? Running too lean per chance? Jumping out of gear? Hopefully it's not piston orientated... I like them the shape they are now!

(noticed once in a while, while at full throttle in 1st, the oil light flickers briefly and disappears as soon as it comes up... have been excusing it as 16 year-old worth of corrosion showing it's head)

PS: the bike is a vj22 rgv 250

Oil light could point towards Big ends .

Oil light could point towards Big ends .

Big end should be alright as it's been replaced around 4thou kms ago but this wasn't under my ownership (have receipts) so not sure what was the condition of the donor.

Am pretty sure the oil light is tied to the sensor in the 2t oil tank though don't quote me on that (was just throwing all the cards on the table). My laptop is currently in repair so don't have access to the workshop manual

Well that sounds bad.

Be carefl with that, detonation on two strokes quickly leads to holes in pistons.

Was it getting hot at all?

I'd pull out a plug and inspect if it's detonating or running lean or anything like that.

Temp was fine, the usual operating... bottom plug is ok, brown with a bit of carbon build up throughout... from 50km stop-go traffic I end up in. Running br8ecmvx as the br9ecm kept fouling.

Top cylinder I can't get to at the moment. Pretty sure it was a b9egv at the top. Will do tomorrow when I clean the rust from the tank.
