ADVENTURE ASSAULT – No 2
WWWWW
Wet, Wild & Wonderful Whangamomona Weekend
Dates 30th June & 1st July 2007
Overnight
Welcome to the 2nd Adventure Assault – Whangamomona
This ride is suitable for all bikes that are suited for gravel roads.
Pillions welcome too
“The way it was” Through the back woods of Taranaki, explore the beginnings and the way it was done…The Forgotten world highway once was a thriving community, the little villages of Tangarakau and others were established to house railway and road workers by the hundreds. Evidence of these little communities and houses are still to be found, travelling this highway is definitely a step back in time.

whangamomona here we come :woohoo:
I'm jealous of the portion from wanganui to whangamomona sounds very interesting but may have to wait for another time. We'll have to settle with the coastal to raglan and kawhia way. By the way, anyone familiar with the area could suggest the most gravelous way from kawhia to taumarunui?

Karl - put the TKC80's back on and get some gravel riding in before hand - like say the Pohongina Valley in behind Ashurst - this stuff is all about doing the miles and getting our heads (attitudes) in the right space.

we'll be expecting you to be punching that new machine along dene - they've a strong reputation as a great perfomer.
Watch some of those corners though - unlike the Makairo the distance down to the Whanganui river from some of the bluffs we expect you'll be sliding around with your foot down (a la Speedway) is a long way and the river deep in parts :dodge:

Hey Dene
Go the mighty DRZ. Great fun in the gravel, but you get a hell of a sore arse on the long sealed stuff.
My recommendation is to gear it up as far as you can. I'm going to set mine up to go a lot quicker this trip, so it won't be revving like hell on the open road.
Cheers,
Bart
Actually, to be honest, the DR650 is probably the better bike if you're going to be doing a lot of road riding. The 400 comes into it's own offroad, but the 650 is a much better package on road. Rubber engine mounts and handle bar weights may not seem like much, but after a few hours on the road you certainly notice it.
denefoster
12th May 2007, 22:43
Yeha, I thought about the 650.. but I'm more after a small bike for hoonery around the countrysides rather than touring. If i stick around new zealand, i'll probably pick up something else for the roadwork. the stock drz400 is 14/47 right ? Haven't actually ridden it yet, so not sure how the gearing is..
I was running 15/47 last ride. I'm looking at 15/39 this time. Should pull 180ish.
15 tooth front takes some mods though. The guard thingy doesn't quite fit.
Anyway, standard gearing is cool offroad, but will rattle out your fillings doing 110 on the seal.

Wife and I went for our first proper ride on the KTM yesterday, up to Mokau for a coffee then on way back went up the Uruti valley to see what the bike was like on gravel with a pillion. Not bad at all. Bit different to trail riding my DRZ400 where it is accelerate hard then brake hard etc etc.
Wife very much enjoyed the ride, gravel didnt phase her. Hope to get the bike run in before the wwwww!

Hi Scott,
I'm pretty keen on this ride, but without consulting some large scale maps, have only a vague idea of where this goes ( being from the south island and all that, so any chance of putting some squiggles on a map with a vague route to get some idea of where this goes ( Or anyone else who knows the area and could do this is also welcome to post a map )
I know it's 760km for me to get to Wanganui for the start, but not sure where 1/2 the other places are :shit:

There is a paper road that will take you from Matau across to the Uruti valley, mates have done it on trail bikes. It is hard to tell on the map on this site but there are two roads that almost meet up and they are the ones to follow.
Unfortunately the only way across the Waitara River is a private bridge, my mates ring and get permission to go across. Something to think about for when it is drier, these are farm tracks not gravel roads

TSS Motorcycles in Lower Hutt - ask for Kerry or Richard - i've found them both to be very helpful. Alternatively Dan or Glen at Motorad.
As for manuals - there's a Nelson based source of tech books that can do as cost effectively as buying from Clymer in the US.
Check out thumpers over on the ADV site and the DR/DRZ group on Yahoo - you may find you can get a downloadable version. :Punk:

Yes might be a little far away but when I lived in Welli (and now in New Plymouth) I still use him for all the bits for my DRZ and my sons KDX. he is the sort of dealer who, after I put my brake lever through my clutch cover (long story!) took the part I needed off a new bike they had for sale as the parts were on back order through Suzuki NZ.
I can not fault him

denefoster
14th May 2007, 21:07
I reckon it was mostly because the bike had been sitting for a month or so.. engine wouldn't turn over at all, just let out some hellacious backfires. Popped the tank off, pulled the plug and cleaned it off, all was well after that. It was awfully grubby.. I reckon I ought to clean out the carb now as well, and I'll need to bleed out the rear brake. Other than that it's a fine bike :)
NordieBoy
14th May 2007, 21:50
I can't even use my DR650 punch line with that reply...
What? You only have one plug?
:D
We leave some of our bikes sitting quite a while and to fire them up I always just undo the carb drain screw and let a bit of fresh fuel flush through and then they fire up no sweat. To really gum up the carb from my experience a bike needs to be sitting for more like a year not just a month.

To be honest, probably not, I get very few free weekends in my occupation as a wedding photographer, so prefer to spend those that I do have actually riding rather than sitting in a tent drinking all day
I'll probably do it sometime in the years to come, but will probably be spending the weekend discovering new off road excursions while you're all snuggled up around a fire telling lies and gaining a hangover....
But feel free to call in for a coffee or whatever to make yourself known on the way down or back home if your route takes you through Timaru. I live in the main street, 100 metres North of the North Street / Stafford Street / Mitre 10 / Shell Intersection..... 0274 342 372

Hey you guys have fun, if you wonder why I'm keeping quiet I already have a holiday in Cairns booked at that time as much as I'd love to go to Whangamomona.
I went and looked at the register link to see who was going and it immediately registered me  so I deregistered, so hope that worked. If it still says I'm coming, I'm not, so sorry about that.

ya could knock a few miles off this trip on day 2 and this is the way the locals do it. mentioned a few pages ago but clarifying.
""We start the day by heading south then turn off at Matau down Junction Rd, out to Urenui, then into Okoki, Kaka Rd, Uruti Rd, Moki Rd""
my suggestion. whanga - SH43 - Junction Road to Matau. ++ Matau North Road - thru farm and over Upper Waitara Bridge and come out on Ngatoto Road - Kaka Road - Uruiti road - Moki Road (past set of The Last Samurai) - Kiwi Road. (as fast as u can get thru tunnel and go straight ahead at end of tunnel. turn. deploy parachute) - out 2 SH3
this cus out that big wasted trip out to Urenui. must get gas at Awakino Shell as nothing at Mokau now
.
also suggest from Aria down Waitewhenua road. gravel and flows beauty. yippee

There's definitely a good offroad "coastal" route to auckland. We'll be doing it on the way down and up again on the wwwww.
It goes from Pt waikato (1hr from akl central), pass raglan, kawhia and ends at awakino (about 200 km in total, not sure); I've only done half of it.
Well as for friday, not sure what the plan is yet. I initially thought Raglan sleep but now that we have a start from wanganui (and crisisman has been twisting my arm), it's looking further south.
You're more than welcome to join us

My understanding is that while there is a "paper road" between Matau Nth road and Ngatoto Rd the bridge over the Waitara river is a private bridge so would need to get permission from the farmer first. How suitable are the tracks for bigger bikes, I again understand that they are just farm tracks?

I had a ride yesterday on part of the day 2 route, rode from Waitara up through Purangi. The grader has been through and for my second time at riding 2 up on the 990 on gravel it was hard work. It would have been more fun on my DRZ I think.
The grader seemed to have avoided some of the windy hills as my wife was complaining last night of a sore butt after all the corrugations.
Hopefully by the end of June the loose gravel will have been swept away by cars and trucks.
We saw the grader later parked up so I presume it is doing all the roads out there.

Took the DRZ out to Red Rocks on Friday, and much good fun was had, until I buried about a meter down on the beach. Still pretty impressed by the bike, that 80Kg off the beamer does make quite a difference. Found out one of the seals on the rear master cylinder piston was shot too, bummer. But all sorted and looking forward to taking it out for a proper ride. Also up for rides this weekend, and everything in between if anyone is keen :)

Cheeky bugger that HP2 tyro GarryW aka KiwiGSer - Pete I think you'll find that the Dakar and the 1150GS have a similar range. When I last did this ride - Whanga via the tunnels we rode from Stratford and out via Kiwi Rd - via Mt Damper I just had sufficient range to reach the first petrol on the coast North of New Plymouth. I'd recommend a small Jerry Can if you've got room like Garry has said he'll be bringing. Cheers all - Aslan :scooter:

Always optomistic but end of June/early July Taranki? It's going to be cold and probably quite wet. Heading up that way next weekend with the Lost Boys (couple coming down from up North) for an overnight at Awakino. Those of us from down here will probably do the western side of the Whanganui River out round Paparangi then head toward Whanga from Stratford and round Mt Damper to the coast. Will let you know how that goes. Looking forward to the 30th

The Whanga road goes inland from Whanga and not towards Uruti.
It has been fixed up recently, two of the bridges have been replaced. The local school organises a trail ride each year which goes down the Whanga road at the start and finishes 100km later at the Whanga Pub (an awesome ride).
Some of you with the smaller bikes might want to go down there for a look, there are some mud holes where the 4WDs have been stuck, one, or two, tunnels etc
Got to remember though that it is legally 2 way and that a 4WD or horse etc could be coming the other way on the corners.

Best way to see the area is to go there in Feb when the school organises the trail ride. It is 100km, you do down the Whanga road, over Bridge to Somewhere then up into private farms, out near Kohuratahi, then cross the "Highway" (so now on the West of it) and head up quite high and come out just South of Whanga.
They stop all the bikes at the pub to get your number to make sure that no one has gone over an edge.... Unlike most trail rides where you sit by the car and trailer making up stories, at this ride you load up as quick as you can then drive to the pub and while having a drink watch all the other bikes and quads coming down the road.
After doing the ride you can then decide where you want to go further

It is 100km, you do down the Whanga road, over Bridge to Somewhere then up into private farms, out near Kohuratahi, then cross the "Highway" (so now on the West of it) and head up quite high and come out just South of Whanga.
M
sounds like a plan young1 - i'd be keen to do the school organised trail ride in Feb 08 - looking fwd to meeting you in a couple of weeks - S :scooter:

All - what ynot slow is commenting on above sounds great for a summer trip on bikes smaller than an 1150GS - I'd be up for it in future - using my DR350 rather than the 'yellow rubber ducky' (aka fat pig - LOL) cheers Aslan :third:
mind you when i went out that way we had 3 on 2 bikes, with packs for tramp to wanganui river and back,i was pillion for while and my pack on back, the rider had his pack on the tank,we didn't travel quick but was fun,i had stint on own with dt175 and managed to slip down a slight bank about 2-3 mtrs, got shit for it for years.

With the cold weather lately I presume those of you who have heated hand grips will want to feel part of the "team" so wont use them.
Maybe we should have a vote of everyone going on this triip, can they use them or not?

Cheeky bugger that HP2 tyro GarryW aka KiwiGSer - Pete I think you'll find that the Dakar and the 1150GS have a similar range. When I last did this ride - Whanga via the tunnels we rode from Stratford and out via Kiwi Rd - via Mt Damper I just had sufficient range to reach the first petrol on the coast North of New Plymouth. I'd recommend a small Jerry Can if you've got room like Garry has said he'll be bringing. Cheers all - Aslan :scooter:

Is it possible to reverse the cables that supply power to my heated grips, so that when you actually have them in the off position they are actually on

Nope, if you've got them - use them. Stiff, cold fingers are most definitely a liability on a bike. I didn't think I'd miss the heated grips when parting with the Dakar, but sure as hell having second thoughts an considering as an optional extra for the HP2, especially after the last couple of mornings coming to work.

It would be nice to have both, but I don't care to much
I love winter riding  last weekend we went for a ride in the crap weather up to the ranges here in Hawkes Bay. even managed to ride through some good snow showers
My bike is currently in for some new tyres, and I have swapped it for a mates Dakar (he wants to make a centre stand, as he doesnt have one, and mine did)
I can say there are some small differences between the F650GS and the Dakar, one being the Dakar is a big taller and the brakes dont seem quite as good!
Also doesnt seem as responsive on the Dakar, but I suspect that could be because my 650 is a twin spark model?
Getting excited now

I had a GS for a few years several years ago, and did not like the front end feel when off the seal. I often thought the Dakars 21inch front might have been much better at cutting a path and swallowing the bumps, everyone down here seems to go with Dakars but no one is using a GS to compare with.

In our incredibly well organised way we have (I think) the following plans....
Leave Auckland 8.00am friday, via Raglan, Kawhia, backroads to Piopio and Taumaranui friday night.
Saturday ride towards Wanganui through the whanganui national park and meet you lot where you start the gravel (don't know where that is because, yet again, my map has done a runner....)
A cunning plan to cut the amount of seal to a minimum!
As far as I know there is me, Windboy (Armando) and his invisible friend (Neil) coming from Auckland. Obviously, if anyone wants to join in let me know.
Scott, I'm open to suggestions here, as none of us have done this trip before so if there is a better way let me know.

Hi Crisis,
Its about time I started paying attention to this thread.(checked my hotel booking, all sweet).
Re Sat to Wanganui: Raetihi is the top of the gravel rd section of the Whanganui river rd. (about 45-60mins from Tauramanui).
You could start heading down it, and probably meet the southern crew near Pipiriki. There is no major turn offs, so the likely hood of missing them is almost nil.
I'm not sure if I'll be heading for Whanga on fri or sat yet, but will let you know closer.
PS Long range looks wet, so the river road will be interesting. Must sort out my tyres. not sure what to change to yet.

I'm not sure about that, I think friday we will get the tail end of the low with some light showers and SW winds, saturday northerly winds and cloud and probably the same on sunday.

So, I'm optimistic about this, feel free to let me know on Saturday night how accurate this is!

Quick question to ones experienced in the cold (where stuff starts getting frosty).
At what point do you need anti freeze in the radiator? :cold:
Pretty much at the point when water freezes windboy :dodge: If you are going to use it, make sure you use an antifreeze made for aluminum engines (yes there are different antifreezes out there). Use a 50-50 water/antifreeze mix, NOT pure antifreeze. Pure antifreeze has a lower boiling point and higher freezing point than a 50-50 mix. I used to use only distilled water. You might think this a little anal, but minerals building up in your coolant system is not a good thing. Flush your coolant every other year, the corrosion preventatives and lubricants wear out over time and need to be replaced. But hey, I've got an oil/air cooled beasty now - so I can relax
windboy
22nd June 2007, 16:00
Cheers Garry, just checked the radiator return reservoir and the fluid is definitely blueish, I'll assume it's antifreeze. Thanks for the destilled water tip, I get plenty of that from the dehumidifier these days... Congrats for the HP2 beast, I look forward to see it in action...

Yes, there will be some rain, but lets put into perspective. The low approaching is carrying nth easterly's. Its not a filthy big southern monster.
We are heading to a warm, hospitable pub, not camping outside.
At any stage at which people wish to abandon/seek shealter, they can.(I would be one of the first)
If some riders have some spare gloves, rain suits, maybe take them for the less well equipped

Just what Tri-boy said, predicted temps are low of 3 -4 and high of 10-13. It will be wet on saturday but thats why we're staying in the pub.
Bring lots of layers and keep warm, then the wet doesn't matter. If it's any help I'm a marine SAR medic in my spare time so I'm sure you'll be well looked after. (where is that anal probe again??)
However, you have to be comfortable and enjoy the trip, if your 50/50 I'd say come and have a blast but the final decision is yours.
I certainly have no criticism of anyone who puts their safety before anything else.
Scott, I'll call you tomorrow night.

OOOps....I hope I didn't start something with my weather "prediction'? As most have said>>>> The rain will be overnite friday and saturday; hopefully clearing L8r. It will not be v low temps, as has been said, cause the system is NE'erly. With average to good gear you will be able to stay warm and dry.
REMEMBER; looks aren't a substitute for safety....ie.....any pvc parka/legging combo over your gear will keep you dry(3/4 battle won!) and you will be surprised how you get wot I call the 'Thermos' effect with another layer trapping an air zone away from your gear; you will stay warm(last 1/4 of battle to survive!). Gloves are a problem, as are boots...no substitute for GOOD in these areas. Oh, and make sure your gear has a good seal around your neck, like real tight; water down the front will defeat all the above!
I belive that cheap pvc's are readily available at the Wharehouse.
STAYING; we are in the Grand hotel, Guyton st. Hey....don't knock it....bars downstairs, irish pub, Breakers cafe, brekkie inc.....Heaven!
My mobile, for the weekend ONLY, will be; 0274 998510.

OK - I've seen some very considered posts reflecting on the weather.
Here's my position Thursday night - fighting off the onset on winter chills but seriously planning to be at Plimmerton Weigh Station for a 7.30am ''off" on Saturday - I'd be really sad to miss this one it's been in the offing for some time.
My daughter - a hardy soul and normally a keen pillion has arrived here from the S.Island today and is keen as to see Jerusalem and the Whanga Pub so unless there's an amazing change in the weather she'll be bringing a car and accompanying us. So there will be spare seats for pillions who may be feeling the cold and coming from the South.
God willing, I'll see you Southern men at the Plimmerton weigh station or points en route.Cheers Aslan :scooter:

wife and I will be there, if the weather is absolute shit on sat morn there is the possibility that I will ride from New Plymouth to Wanganui and she will drive to the pub later in the day. She is still keen though to go on the bike.
Tell me will you be locking your bikes at Whanga? if so someone I hope someone will lock my bike to theirs?
m
love Ducati Jim's humour - like Young1 I to have concern - mine's about whether my bimmer will start on Sun morn after a cold night at the Whanga as my battery is seeming not to like the cold.
Young1 I'd be flattered to have your Katoom tethered (secure against bandits) alongside my bimmer.

After discussion with Hugh, we've decided to pull out. Sorry guys. The thought of sitting on dirt bikes in the rain for 5 to 6 hours each day did it.
My reason for going was more for the scenic side of things. Won't see much in that weather.
Good luck, and have a great weekend.

The weather forecast this morning still mentions rain but it will be warmer with the North Easter. I may have so many clothes on that I will have trouble walking but heh isnt a day on the bike with a group of like minded (mad) bikers, better than most other days?
Aslan if it does get bad for my wife I presume she can catch a ride with your daughter? She is off to buy some over trou today.
The only thing that I am not sure about now is getting my bike wet!!!!
See you all in WangaVegas tomorrow at 10am!!

Hi All - Young1 in particular - your wife and any other pillions will be able to ride in the car. Unless there's an amazing change in the weather, I think you can assume we'll have my daughter driving a support vehicle for those of us from Southern parts - just like 'The long way round' :dodge:
In the event the weather improves to the point where she prefers to ride pillion then we'll both be on the 1150.
cheers all - safe riding - Aslan :scooter:
PS -the Wharehouse overtrou are a good idea - my dri rider pants leave me a wet rider too often

I seem to be coming down with a cold so seeing as I have my priorities right I have taken the day off work and am riding up to Wanganui after lunch. I will be staying at the top 10 holiday park by the river. If I feel ok on Sat morn I will see you all at the BP at 10am. If I am feeling worse I will head back home instead (don't want to run the risk of giving 'the bot' to anyone else).
my cell is 0274499115
Hopefully will see you all on Sat at 10.

You could always take the direct route to Whanga, up to Stratford then inland if you weren't feeling 100%
I am sure everyone is, but if any of you are not going to stay at the Whanga pub after all, make sure you let them know!

If you get there 1st can you warm it up and make a brew :)
MagicFairy may not be coming along now. We've got two big dogs that
need looking after. Unfortunately our doggy sitter decided to go to a wedding
this weekend at the last minute. Which has left us a bit short.
I'm in for sure though. The worse the weather gets the more of an adventure it
will be.
Really looking forward to it.
See you guys tomorrow

I may as well go ahead and take the plunge and commit to this event, so go ahead and put my name on that spare bed ( and I'll undertake that if for whatever reason I don't make it, I'll pay you for it anyway - bit hard to sneak out of an offer like that on such a public forum ) cheers, Stu
After all of that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pull the pin too :shit: , and ironically enough, not for the weather:sick: . I was contacted by one of my better clients last week wanting me to photograph some of their re-branded chemist shops in the North Island :Punk: next week, and after a lot of changing of plans, I now have the first shoot in Levin on Monday:nono: , so have no chance of getting up there on the bike, then back down here to pick up a car load of camera gear to be back in Wellington by Monday. I've just spoken to Dene to sort out the accomodation thing, so if anyone is still looking for a bed at the pub, give denefoster a call. All the best gys, have a great trip, and wishing I was there.
A word of advice, go to your local shoe shop and get yourself a big can of leather waterproofer and spray the hell out of your boots, jacket etc. Seems to work well even on Cordura etc, just use lots of coats letting it dry between each coat.:sunny:
Cheers, Stu ( P.S. I expect a full report and photos sometime next week ):nono:
