Mrs Chasio is thinking about learning to ride... I don't think I could in all honesty recommend it to her as a learner bike but 'twould be fun to look after while she wasn't riding it!

A nicely set up wee strom here (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/auction-612705220.htm), which is familiar to a few of us I believe. If I had $6k and space in the garage I'd be in like Flynn.

I thought it would be perfct as a learner bike? Why wouldn't you get it- it sure as hell would keep up with other bigger bikes. Not too tall either

Just thinking about the two stroke characteristics but if not a big issue with these, maybe I can talk her into it...?

That bike has been relisted, must not have met reserve. My G/F has learned to ride on one & we fight over it. Got some loweing links & dropped the yokes on it so it's a foot & a half for her. Not an old school 2t, it pulls from nothing & has no real step in the power but when you do get the revs up it's still a 230cc 2t, you can ride it pretty hard or just do gymkhana in a car park like riding a trials bike. Good info on the ADV forum. If I had the money it would be in the shed. Nothing comparable since they killed the 2t. Absolutely brilliant bike, does everything.
That bike does not have the kick start. Our starter motor crapped out so the missus got some old school training, on the stand, good swing & ning, ning, ning. Got the starter motor fixed for $110. You can get a kick start kit for them & apparently the starter motor is used on other models should you have an issue.
Did I say that I love these bikes?

Oh, got tarction control too, climbs hills like a goat.

The horn is shite, meep.

Pm me if you wish & the ladies can have a yarn.

Thanks for that. She has long legs (first thing I noticed :Punk:) so seat height should be OK but lowering links might be good for confidence. One issue I see is that I would then have completely copied Struan's stable (last I heard) and I might have to start paying royalties!

I was originally thinking a Scorpio for a first up ride. She had a leg over a VTR 250 (how different from a DT?) and liked how low it was and 'twas a better match for her rather fetching Dainese leathers as well. But I would prefer the DT, dammit!

Gotta be a bit softly, softly with things as I don't want to scare her off by turning up at home with one. Let's see how it goes...

Did ya see the DT 230 postie motard?

When I get some cash from the lottery commission I'm going to get 17"rims on me spare wheels..,. It's hilarious on twisty roads with dual porpoise tires, 17" stickys would be off the scale. Think I might go and enjoy it's light zinginess this arvo.

Actually NigelP on here also did the Freewind / DT230 combo (Motu's old one).
Owing to a recent purchase, I'm being "encouraged" to sell one of the bikes. "If" this happens, the Freewind will eventually go, simply because the DT230 is much more versatile.
I doubt you or your Mrs will need lowering links (I'm a shorty). Tyres are cheap with heaps of options. Chassis is basic but strong & suspension has good adjustment. Only downer is the 150km fuel range (riding hard), so some sort of aux tank will be needed for longer rides in remote areas..

Not as much fun as a DT (and much heavier), but what do folks think of this cheap 400cc Transalp (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/auction-615024924.htm) as an option?

I don't know nuttin about 400cc transalps but that one has had a hard life. They do take their punismeht well, though.

I do know that wimmin like shiny, sparkly things... They seem to prefer form over function.

Suspect you're right on all counts. A nice looking dull bike would probably be more welcome than a tatty hooner.

When our DT turned up my G/F was beside herself it was so pretty & shiny. "For me?" she cried. Didn't even know it was a Yamaha for a couple of days or a 2t until she asked what the smell was.

The older couple 2-up on one of those at Bannockburn bike week this year were keeping up quite easily with guys one up on $30k machines and went up one hill I wimped out of on the DR.

Eddie - I suspect the older couple you refer to are like me in their 60's and the rider a very competent rider of the 400cc Trans Alp - I've been in awe of the gents skill at ADV rides I've been on since 2005 - suspect they've since quit the TA which was a nice machine - understand husband of the duo has a motocross background - it shows. I struggled on my DR in the last Pukemanu in the mud - they made the same muddy ascents (and descents) look easy on the TA. As always its about the rider's skill level more than the machine IMO :)

Set your missus up for success. I posted on another thread recently, one about bikes for short arses IIR, why we ended up with the DT. From a clean sheet perspective even the Iron britched Chancellor after a nervous start has realised the value of the skill set you get from a dual purpose bike.
You are 100% on the right track. Two riders in the household makes for far more betterer conversations & happy happy joy joys! You can watch bikes on the telly all night too as long as you can answer all the questions.
All the very best to you both.:woohoo:

Funny you should post that. I've noticed the odd femme style critique on recent rides. The comment that sounds like a compliment but then you realise it was a jab 10 minutes later.
Must start watching Sex in the City so I can translate faster.<_<

We sat & watched the Erzberg live feed all night & watch Moto Gp from start to finish. I do have to get off the couch to fetch her a pot to piss in, though. :weird:

We apologise for the disruption. Normal transmission should resume immediately after this post.

I concur. Had a hard life that bike. Lots of tells. Back in the day, in Scotland, my mate put 40'000 miles on his Dommy, salt, rain, ice & snow. He had a habit of chucking at the scenery, too. Looked more honest than that bike and had more paint. Ran like a clock regardless.

Having owned 2 of these now, would say they are awesome Adv bikes, only minuses being they are a tad slow and small on the road

Big pluses offroad though as steer well even on trail tires (even in the sand)

Please someone else buy this before I give into temptation and make an offer

This wee bike is no longer running but someone may be able to fix it up - have had some diagnostics done at Cycle Treads, after replacing the cdi and coil they say it may be the stator, or it may be dodgy old wiring.

Sounds like a bargain right!

Comes with a box of bits, manual, service history and a spare tyre - might be able to get started if someone knows what they're doing. S=R is $200

I would like to vin her but need more information as to why it has been de-registered?
Hasn't been written off?
It should have a vin tag on her somewhere?
Anyone down south know about this bike at all? :)

Yeah I've just bought #5, A DR250XC Djebel for the other half, #4, a DR650 with lots of extra's with be up for sale soonish, and there's 3 young un's in the house that are dead keen on getting bikes, 2 of which are close to getting their licenses so something like a couple of DR200's/250's and a small bike to suit a 11 year old girl might be on the list soon.

Plus I have a sidecar that still needs bolting up to something.

its a serious affliction alrite eddie (good name that ;) ) as of the beginning of this year i had 7 bikes...the culling process is ongoing atm, hard to watch bikes gather dust whilst the bills stack up eh lol
how much was the djebel? do you know if they have the height adjustable shock like the 650? i owned a dr250r which i sold last year and that was handy to lower for mrs and son etc, although afaik the drz250 is single mount hole only

I stole the Djebel for $2k.

They do have the height adjustment for the rear shock same as the 650, it was pretty much the deal maker for that one's use and it's been lowered.

Speed at 7500rpm in 5th gear 151kph, in 6th 171kph (owners on Internet are reporting top speed at between 170-180 so sounds right as motor should pull 8000rpm ok)

...I'm feeling really guilty about my XLV 750...it has been at the back of my shed for some time...it was rolled in there with a warrant and running well about five years back, then lots of shit happened...a new bike for the road, an escalated commitment of time to our club, amongst other things...I never pulled it out again...reg on hold etc...I moved some stuff recently and saw her again and realised that I am holding onto a neat machine that somebody else should be riding...since sitting the front brake has seized and it would need some TLC to get her back out on the trail//road...Im outside of Chch and if anyone was interested I would let them have it for a song...dollar a cc or something along those lines...

That's very tempting, even at this distance.

How standard is it? and what year?

Hi folks, the time has come to sell my beautiful '99 DR350. I'm gonna put it on Tardme next week but thought I'd let you folks know in advance in case anyone here wants it first.

1999 Dirt model (kicker)
Good nick, well used but very reliable and lots of fun! :woohoo:

Comes with:

Stock tank and larger Ascerbis 15L tank (I think it's 15L).
Spare set of wheels so I can do a quick swap out from road tyres and gearing to dirt tyres, rimlocks and lower ratio gears.
Bunch of spare (used) tyres in varying states.
Box of stuff I've collected along the way.
Has rack on the back for mounting Top Box. Rack has very handy handles for enabling people to help you out of the mud!
Extra windscreen hand fashioned by Transalper himself :)
REG(on hold)/WOF, never had an issue ...

Probably some other stuff too that I've quite possibly forgotten ATM.

021-135-4343 if you're interested ...

Cheers!

IMHO there are two issues with the 750, I gave one a good run several years ago and this is why I didn't buy

If you look at the pic you will notice how punny the front disc are, which means very weak front brakes (and they are known for that so it probably wasn't just the bike I rode)

Poor low down power (but good top end), Good top end IMO made bike dangerous consider front brake issue

Perhaps the one I rode was a dog but those things would need to be checked since 110mph+ potential without brakes is a scary thought.

Remember you don't have to fill it up right?

Hopefully I will get it. I have seen it in the flesh, ridden it too, it sounds bloody awesome!
Don't know what it is worth though...There are a few things to change but it is a great old beast and there are some NEW things, esp Carbie, complete wheels, rims, spokes. It is very dirty, but after some tlc in my camp it will look great alongside the aprilia and the DR...
There is loads of interest, but only one has visited thus far, oh and someones sister :)

It was funny, I arrived, nice bloke Craig showed me the bike. We couldn't start it, it was flooded and then the battery died. I got on the quad, he bumped it, then it stalled and we had to do the same again.
The fuel leak is not an issue, just some gland that has perished. I went for a blat down their long metal driveway, almost a km, then went around the metal roads for a bit of a blast.
It has impressive pick up and I suggest the new Carburetor down under and the FMF pipe gives it a few more ponies! :)

It will need a paint I think, shrouds, panels etc, thinking white :) or orange...haha....
The only thing holding up the sale will be my bidding ability? I sure am gonna stay home on the night of the auction and wait and see. I wish I knew what he paid for it a couple of years ago?

Hopefully I will get it. I have seen it in the flesh, ridden it too, it sounds bloody awesome!
Don't know what it is worth though...There are a few things to change but it is a great old beast and there are some NEW things, esp Carbie, complete wheels, rims, spokes. It is very dirty, but after some tlc in my camp it will look great alongside the aprilia and the DR...

Interesting.

This is the feedback someone gave ??

ulko8 (100 ) 29/12/12
warrenmh was the seller
(#539214405)

he was misrepresenting his bike.Advertised as ;running very well, could do with a little cosmetic makeover;I found it to be dangerously faulty. The bottom of tank was brazed slightly leaking, the frame had cracks, engine mounts where loose, the chain damaged ,the gearlever welded on,steering bearing broken the list goes on.my fault for not looking before .when I suggested to him a part refund he didnot show any goodwill.
That is not fair.Make sure you have a good look at what you are buying here.
trader responded: 20/6/13

$1 reserve..rode the bike before taking..gave him heaps of free parts and $200 back..muppet

Still if its going ok regardless of Ks and you get for around $2500 would be cool, would even have a ride on it for you

I can see you want this bike, I just think you need to psychologically prepare for some possible major engine work with ks that high

No offence meant just trying to look out for a fellow adv rider. (remember our DR sucked $2500 into the engine after I got it at 73.000ks:shit:)

If you want some auction hints our family is a bit of a gun at that (won 100s of auction) and can PM you

Yep, maybe, maybe not....Life is a lottery right....

Oh wait, that has happened to a number of bikes...:)

marie89 never buys anything that isn't dirt cheap, don't know about the other guy but if no one else has really looked that's a good sign. Good luck with the auction, I'm sure it will be in your garage soon enough =)

Well spotted feedback, BUT, that was feedback for a 1991 250 Dominator which needed tidying up, not from the buyer of the KLR.
Pays to check these things out tho. :2thumbsup

Hope the auction goes well Mark, that KLR could be a keeper

Yes, thanks mate. I saw the feedback too, that didn't make one bit of difference, as you stated, different bike entirely. I am already nearly tapped out....:(

And in regard to auctions we have found its best not to keep bidding (but if we share all the secrets then everyone will know)

In all honesty I think you may have dodged a bullet there as ridden hard for long I think it would have blown

And I know first hand how disappointing and annoying that can be :(

At $2500 http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/dual-purpose/auction-669390121.htm that might have been bearable but any more and your wallet would be crying and wouldn't wish that on ya

If you take the emotion out of it, and see the bike for what it really is, a 26 year old single with 120k on it, I wouldn’t pay more than 1500 for it.

But hey...that’s just me...

And that my Kiwibiker friends is a wrap! :corn:
The SR43B (sounds better, kinda like the Blackbird stealth plane) :) has a warrant and Reg now, the aprilia (with a small a) is running smoothly and is fully legal as well. SO, who needs another bike Huh?
What was I thinking!!
Christmas coming and all that, I need some cash for a riding over the break, so make do....will ya! :done:

2.5k is not far off what I reckon mine is worth and its got a shitload more goodies than that one and has done less than half the mileage.
