Yes please! The Adv S is a cool bike though the 640 is probably better for type of riding I do.

Right about the lotto though!

Shit that's excellent buying! :first: That's the sister bike to mine, the only other '05 imported, they were $17,000 new.

The bloody thing looks like it's never hit the dirt - rolling or otherwise! LOL. The bars appear rolled back, chopper-style, rather than forward like a dirt bike. Must be wheelie city on that thing.

I wonder about those 'hot grips' grips, too. The ones on my roadie are really hard and unyielding: not exactly what you want on this thumper.

And don't forget: KTM 990 Adventure 2007 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dual-purpose/auction-99291634.htm).

Had a look yesterday, they have refined the body panels quite a bit, sharpening them up reminiscent of their SM models.

Wonder if I can take the demonstrator for a 'test' to the Brass, bring it back dirty with 2,500km extra on the clock?

Apart from the time issue.. I wonder how hard such a trip would actually be to do, once the bike is purchased and shipped to Africa how much would it cost??? hmmm i'm sure it's easier than I think... i.e. probably don't actually need to win Lotto to do it....perhaps being passionate and driven to do it would be enough..... just dreaming out loud ...dreaming dreaming :)

I'm pretty sure if you are well organised with documentation then it isnt actually that hard when the wheels are on the land of choice. As for cost - who knows? I've just been looking on the Horizons Unlimited site (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/) and found that for probably about $800-$1000 (very roughly) nz you could ship you bike by sea to Cape Town.

I've just read Lois on the Loose (http://www.loisontheloose.com/) by Lois Pryce about her trip from Alaska to Ushuaia and am inspired. I have the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook (http://www.adventure-motorcycling.com/edition5/index.htm) by Chris Scott (http://www.adventure-motorcycling.com/) on the way. Now I just have to get wifey confident on a bike and convince her to try something like this. Maybe, just maybe in about 3 years something may happen.

Whoa - my little day dream earlier is quite separate from the reality of this September when we are going over. No riding this sep, just visiting our third niece/nephew (to be born in few weeks). My bro in law married a Swedish girl from Areavara near Pajala (see if you can find them - hint G.E.).

I saw in another thread that you were going over next year. Wifey and I did our belated honey moon (due to my ruptured Achilles - I should leave myself alone) in Jan/Feb 2006 i.e. best bit of winter. We spend 4 weeks around Uppsala/Stockholm and 1 week in in Areavara/Pajala with a trip to Kiruna/Jukkasjarvi and to see the Ice Hotel. Got one day of -30 degrees celcius (rough stuff) when above the circle but mostly between -10 and -20 which is pretty easy to deal with. If you want some inspiration and a some contacts for sweden check out this adv thread (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140803).

If you want any info/advice on Sweden I'm glad to try and help where I can.

Oh well, it was worth a shot!

Yes, not too many offers on it. I think half of the problem is getting the right person to find it. It's a big country over here with many people and many different forums. So it's a pretty hit and miss affair really. I thought the bikesales site I advertised on would be fairly good but as with most computer data these days it's all located by specifically looking for KTM and 990 or by price. If someone searches by price then they get pages and pages of bikes and I'd be lucky to be on the first couple. I'm going to try one of our bike sales magazines next. At least with that people actually see every bike in it...

Another factor is that I started with what was probably a top price for it and a lot of people aren't in that sort of price range for a bike. But like you, I would have thought someone would have snapped it up. I know I would have when I was looking! :)

Anyway, good luck with your travels. There's a lot of interesting stuff out there to see.

Cheers

EXTRAS ADDED ARE HYDRAULIC CLUTCH, SWITCH GEAR ALTERED TO SAME AS 450 - THE HEADLIGHT CAN BE MANUALLY SHUT OFF, HANDLEBAR RISERS, CENTRE STAND, LOWERED 2 AND 1/3 INCHESMust've been an Aussie or US-spec model with no light switch. The sidestand would be the addition, as the centrestand has long been the standard part. Handlebar risers and hydraulic clutch are now standard.

Bugger-all kays on it, I'll do it's annual mileage just on the weekend away to the Brass!

I've asked the obvious question, how was it lowered? and the not so obvious, by whom?

This is only the second one I've seen for sale in 3 years. That is, the second older one, not including the "near new" '05 (above) and the '06 turned over last year by AMPS.

A ktm dealer on the shore let it slip last week.

Well that's all well and good for those of us that can afford such machines, but for someone just looking at starting into adventure biking or looking to upgrade from their 250 etc, a good buy can be had on Trademe at present in the form of a 1989 KLR650 for around the $2500 mark

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=100201225

It's only got 35,000k's on the clock which for one of them is just run in nicely ( I've got 16,000km on my current one, and it's only 6 months old ) :scooter:

It's obviously spent a lot of tome outside as the red panelwork is faded to hell, but bear in mind with a panel set brought in from the states, and with a motor and frame paint job, it could be looking like a new machine in no time

Actually I've still got a full set of Kawasaki Lime Racing Green panels I took off my other KLR and replaced with red before I highsided it :shit: Make me an offer.... :nono:

I know I'm biased, but as for the performance of the KLR's, just ask cooneyr, plug, transalper or timg about how they handle on the gravel

KTM seem to be keeping it pretty quite - is it just a figment of our imaginations? How stressed is the 690 motor? Its one thing to run it in competition bikes like the Rallye and the Supermoto but Adv riders don't want to be doing rebuilds every 50,000kms let alone 10,000kms.

It would completely displace the 640 Adv I would have though so maybe they are waiting till that model is considered close to outdated first before serious development begins. This strategy makes sense given that there seems to be nothing out there about a 690 Adv - not even concept drawings/designs/specs.

The 690 is the 'next generation' LC4 to replace the aging 640 (actually 625cc), which has been around since 1996, with few changes: the High Flow head in 2003 being the most significant revision. The 690 will probably be less stressed than the 640 due to major engineering enhancements. It's not going to be like a WR250F/CRF250.

So yeah, Ryan you are on the money! but the time is now.

This is the best bit of news yet. I know it has to be a balance between maintenance, power and weight but I defiantly prefer erring to the lower maintenance and higher weight side.

I obviously dont do enough reading though as I didnt know the 625 aka 640 had been around since 96.

I've asked the obvious question, how was it lowered? and the not so obvious, by whom?To answer my own question:

The pull rods were from Emig Racing in the states. Website is http://www.emigracing.com/ There are two lengths available. The longer ones resulted in the lower end of the damper catching the frame, so I have used the shorter ones. Still give a good reduction in height. Front forks were adjusted to match.Emig offer 2 1/4" and 1 1/8", he's running the latter, same as me.

Note that this bike has the forks that are rated as the best ever on the 640 (including the newer models).

Yep nice but good luck to him. I've been looking at bikes lately & nothing seems to be moving.
With one bike I am intereseted in the owner was just about dropping his pants but I still have to try to sell my KLR. Another owner of a similar bike must of just had enough & did a $1 reserve.

For this time of year, ie. primo riding time, I reckon it's showing that people are really thinking about how they can save a bit of money.

Unbelievable. I remember the old days of racing enduros on my PE400, filling up the tank and having the fuel overflow onto the hot engine. That must have been close to flash point and there would not have been much I could have done to put any fire out especially as the fuel cap would still have been off!

Remember, even a spark plug, sparking away madly, sometimes isn't enough to ignite the air/fuel mix.

Conditions have to be just right.

My little TT had such a leaky carb due to all the o-rings being shot that nearly 3L of fuel was dripping onto the engine and evaporating per tank.
170km per tank vs 240km when I replaced the o-rings.

The TT engine will run at >140 deg C in the hills. Up to 170 deg when you turn it off and there's no oil circulating.

But the conditions only have to be just right once to ruin your day.

Later TDM 850's had the 270 degree crank like the TRX so would sound similar. Suspect the 1991 had the 360 crank like the XTZ750 though. The para twins sound nice though. Bro's XTZ750 with an arrow exhaust without the baffle = (but then again maybe I'm a bit boring).

The "maintenance" listed is trivial stuff, the sort of thing that gets done routinely when doing the annual check of an older 2 valve twin. Certainly nothing material relating to making good the effect of 375,000 km. Work of some description must have been done by the previous owner though - gearbox would not have got past 100k or so without the circlip modification for a start, neither would exhaust valves get far past this. BMW's do last if looked after but this is big miles.

If it has indeed done 375,000 km $5000 is well overpriced in my view. You certainly get a lot better value with a non GS!

Interestingly at last WoF the inspector refused to put in the true mileage - he was only interested in what was showing on the odo. Given that I can adjust that at any time....

A tidy mark 1 Zephyr with those ks is still a tidy mark 1 Zephyr. It's not mint & doesn't say it is. To be honest I didn't see the $5K buy now & was thinking in the $3.5 - $4k mark so I'll eat humble apple crumble & admit it is overpriced for that price.:niceone:

As to the operation to fix the collar bone - I'm guessing it may happen in the next month/ 6 weeks followed by a 3 month recuperation - I should be ready for the 2013 Dusty Butt about then - have considered giving up on ADV riding and getting a scrambler or some such cruiser given my advancing years ;)

That is a high mileage for a bike that has only been used for commuting. .

The mileage would result from a daily commute of only about 20 km each way, about the end of the motorway section of SH1. The bikes I see being ridden in from Paraparaumu would be putting this distance on in less than a year if used most work days. The DRZ400 I owned some years ago had accumulated a similar distance on the clock in a year, allegedly commuting to Wellington from the Wairarapa. No, would not have been my choice for a long distance commuter either.

Michael

Don't worry about 2 points. They expire in a month and don't penalise you in any way. They are simply a way of reminding you to keep within the rules.

Now if you were to pick up 60 points then you may see what a pink screen looks like.

Is there an easy way for you guys to do computor stuff so that when quoting a post the pic gets deleted? nothing worse on adv rider when someone quotes a whole ride report to say "great writeup" IS there also a magic way of kb automatically resizing any pics when posting so there wouldn't be any probs?

nothing worse on adv rider when someone quotes a whole ride report to say "great writeup"

or even worse - quotes whole ride report and says "great rr, don't ride faster than your angel can fly" - I have, on occasion, dry wretched reading some replies to great rrs

solution when reading Ride Reports in ADVrider (thanks to Coonyr for this gem) open in firefox and tick the "only see xxxxx's posts?" box - if there is a question or thread instigated within the ride report that you want to read all replies untick said box and voila!

Is there an easy way for you guys to do computor stuff so that when quoting a post the pic gets deleted? ....

I WISH there was. Unfortunately that option just doesn't yet exist.

When an image is posted in order to save writing (a picture equals a thousand words and all that) then quoting it for context should not be an infraction. If its recent its gonna be cached locally anyway so any complaints or justification of the rule based on re-transmission delays is utter bollocks.

Quoting the entire text of a post is however a violation of netiquette; dunno the rules here about it, can't be bothered looking, it happens a lot but I've never seen it jumped on... it should be.

As for quoting an entire long post with multiple embedded images... well that's just plain rude. Same caching rules apply, but it's a pain to scroll past and completely unnecessary because it adds no value.

Bugger the rules, just plain common sense really. Sorry, I guess that's out of place on kiddiebiker, innit?

If you can afford it, want it, like it....buy it. You always wonder if you don't :nya:

You seem to be able to sell em ok if you don't like it.

Cheers

That looks like fun

Infraction for quoting imbedded photos :nono:
Yep I got one of those too :weep:
By way of explanation I was directed to a thread where some tosser was moaning about this as it used up bandwidth blaa blaa blaa
Then he had a whole lot of meaningless repetitive drivel under every post he made which filled up half a page :tugger:
To all and sundry what bitch an moan in their attempts to make the world a better place
If your gonna stand on a soap box and beat ya drum, make sure you do it on level ground :oi-grr:

With this forum being vBulletin open source software released under the GNU License, the site owner has access to the site files allowing a mod to the PHP code to remove images from replies. Targeting and removing the HTML "img" tags upon server side parsing of the reply is very straightforward, this is a quick and dirty regular expression function I quickly coded as an example of stripping one or more images from a forum reply:

Almost anything and everything is possible with web software

this is a quick and dirtyThat'll strip all images. You only want to strip images within quote tags. However, I would suggest keeping the first quoted image and stripping the rest.

I sat on a Dr650 yesterday for the first time (new at Boyd's), liked it better than the KLR650 I had previously sized up.. Will have to ride one soon.
