Hi all. I may be riding a bike down from Hamilton on Friday afternoon, from Hamilton to Wellington.

The question is this, can anyone tell me the condition of State Highway one all the way down please. Any road works, gravel, etc. Otherwise I may opt to go via Napier...

Thanks in advance.

There's some a few k's north of the Hutt. Nothing seriouse and it may well all be done by now. I went North of SH1 and came home via Napier. All good as far as I can recall.

Lots of resealing works from Mercer to Hamilton on SH1. Transit's consultants can give more details if you need.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

This is the situation. I've bought a bike off Trademe, an 06 ZX10, to be exact. I'll be flying up from Nelson and hopefully arriving in Hamilton just before 1pm. The bike should be at the airport, so that will be my departure point.

The reason I thought of SH1 was in case something went wrong, there'd be enough traffic to possibly get help. I know very little of the other roads you guys have mentioned.

te awamutu-->taumaranui-->national park-->ohakune-->sh1

That sounds like a good option, though

yeah except keep heading south at raetihi through to wangavegas

Or this way... I'd rather travel a touch further and have a fun ride than sit on the straight and boring... That said, it actually looks shorter on the map than SH1...

I'll let you guys know closer to the time about my arrival etc.

Thanks again for the advice and inputs...

if you don't do the vinegar hill option then my route is shorter.

and less travelled so speed needs less care :niceone:

I don't know this vinegar hill you speak of...
Also, I don't plan on doing anything silly on roads I don't know and I don't know any of those.

ham to ohakune and onto sh1 is all very predictable roads.

vinegar hill runs from sh1 north of hunterville to fielding

So far, the provisional journey is from Hams -> Te Kuiti -> Taumaranui -> National Park...
Which of the other two, Wanganui or Taihape, is the best bang for the buck? At this stage I'm inclined to go Wanganui but if you lads and lasses say the other way is better, I shall incline the other way...

PS: I may have to change my flight plans yet, but I'll let you guys know. Work and shite determines this...

Take a look on a map and have a look at all the lovely squiggles between National Park & Wangavegas. SH1 thru Taihape is really rather boring, like the rest of that road (in the north is. anyway).

Nutter34

That is true but as Cowpoos pointed out with the Napier way, the roads may be damp. Do the Wanganui squiggles dry out this time of year? Or remain damp?
