hey guys,

I was wondering if any of you out there have any ideas for me to get a part time job in the animal field?

I studying a vet nursing course at the moment, so really busy (not to mention it takes me 1 and a half hours to get to unitec every day) ..

im just looking for something that will help me in my course and that will get me some cash, as i need the money for a bike and moving out etc...

so if you have any ideas for job opportunities etc around the north shore preferrably ( i live in northcote and have limited transport, hence i need a bike) then please tell me

:D
thanks

~AJ~

There was a part-time job at the airport looking after the beagles a few weeks ago. Requirement was to be a vet nurse... might be worth contacting them?

Edit: I assume that is was with MAF

Edit (2): Not exactly the shore though :)

like I was telling you, you have the skills, both profesional and personal to take on a job.

A big reason people find it hard to get work is they put up "mental" barriers that stop them from even appying to the compaines.

Companies KNOW your a student, they know you don't know anything and they will be willing to train you. Trust me, you have nothing to fear in appling for jobs at all. Listen to what your brain says and then do the oppersit :D

The trick is to get on with the people at interviews, or even somone you are talking to (might not be the boss etc) and they often say "we don't need anyone here currently but my mate down at xxxvet (hehe) is looking, I will put the word in for you...." Ive gotten jobs like that before.

You go girl....

Also go to the unitec carrers and employment center, get them to make a CV and cover letter for you (free of charge) they have heaps of info on how to impress your future boss.

You'll do fine :D

What about dog walking?? Put an add up on the supermarket noticeboard. Do you have a local "buy sell swap' newspaper up there?? if ya do, put an add in there too. What about sometime not animal related?? Housekeeping you could charge $15 ph.. cash in hand! Good luck with ya studies chick!! :Punk:

Try either your local SPCA or the zoo. If it's experience you want, both agencies are always desperate to get volunteers to mind and care for their inmates.

The North Shore City Council animal rangers too may have opportunities that you may wish to consider (or Rodney District Council, depending how far up the Shore you live).

cant get to any SPCA or animal shelter.. NOT NEAR ME AT ALL!! ... so yeah.. i have no way to get to them... AND i need money.. not volunteer work.. i do enough of that in my course anyway... ...

but for the animal rangers... eh... they dont like people like me... so yeah...

but to all, thanks for the advice... im looking for specifically animal caring jobs... ill look for other work after all my opportunities in that field are exhausted... and looked at etc... ...

Have you tried the local vet clinic and asked if they have any work you could do, or a cattery or kennel? How are you with horses, riding stables are usually screaming out for workers.

Gawd, I hope you aint a vegetarian... :innocent: :dodge:

Anyways, is there a local McDonald's near you at all.

They always take on part-time workers..... and they work in with your uni studies etc. The pay is better than working at the local petrol station.

i work at the clinic for free on thursdays for my course already... they have a cattery.. but im scared to ask them for paid work... heh... and horses... well... im scared of them... they're huge.. and ive only ever handled them 2x ever... im not a big fan of anything bigger than me.. which is a lot .. lol... i like them and all.. but they're scary.... so i keep my distance or stay behind a fence....

heh...

and yes.. i am a vegetarian.. and i hate mcdonalds... so... not working there ever... i totally rule out fast food places.. thats the only thing i rule out.. call me a tad fussy.. but i hate them ALL! they smell like feaces and you get crappy pay...

Hey good luck chick, I'm a Vet nurse and an Animal Science Tutor in Wellington, pity your not down here as I have lots of local contacts. Sounds as though your location is going to let you down, without transport it limits you so much. I know down here there is a problem retaining part time staff in pet stores, not sure what its like up your way but may be worth a try.
Also keep your options open, working with animals is great, but that will come once you get your qualification, something like pumping gas or working in a supermarket may not be your ultimate aim, but as a money spinner in the meantime with not too much 'work stress' it might be the go, some of my students choose to take on these types of jobs so as not to burden themselves with too much stress on top of the exams/assesment deadlines etc.

Either way, good luck in the job hunt, and best of luck with the Nursing :)

yeah, i know that, believe me .. hah.. ive tred to apply other places but no one seems to want a bar of it hah.. the only other place ive worked is the baby factory.. and i hated it to no end... i dont mind supermarkets.. but im keeping my sights on my priorities... money isnt that big of a deal... i can still live at home but i have to bus everywhere... and busses in auckland suck... so i have that problem... the local places in northcote suck as well.. no very good to work at... te nearest is maybe birkenhead for some other work, outside the field... but yeah... i dunno...

It sounds like you're making excuses. There are plenty of people who every day commute large distances on public transport to eke out a living on the award wage or less. Perhaps a non-religious vegetarian who still lives off their mum and dad really doesn't need to work?
