SPCA shocked by dog hanged from tree

An animal welfare inspector says years of experience did not prepare him for the sight of a dog which had been starved and then hanged from a tree.

SPCA inspector Kevin Plowright was called to a plot of council land on Norrie-Smith Road in Manukau after a member of the public spotted the dog which had been hanged from a gum tree.

When Mr Plowright arrived someone had cut down the light tan mastiff-cross, and it was lying at the base of the tree.

The dog was extremely skinny and covered in sores, and had been hanged by a rope attached to its collar.

" What is even more horrifying is that there were scratch marks on the trunk of the tree which indicated that the dog, despite being close to death from starvation, had put up a valiant struggle for some time before dying," Mr Plowright said.

He said he had seen a lot of horrible things during his career but this was particularly sickening.

"We want to find the culprits and bring them to justice. It's the least we can do for this poor dog."

Mr Plowright spoke to people living nearby but nobody had seen anything. Anyone with information about the crime could contact the SPCA.

How can anyone be that heartless, that disgusts me. You have to wonder what's next for the person or people that would do this. Truely sick.

A good old fashioned lynching mob, now that would be ironic.

If I could remember where my bike keys were I would ride up there and kick your tits in for a comment like that. :nono:

Yes nurse, yes I will be there shortly, now where am I, what was I saying? :motu: John.

Seen it done before and all i can say is that im big enough and ugly enough now that if i see it again, the culprits will find it difficult to speak to the judge

OK.... Calm about this now (sniffs lavendar). If the scum is reading here - I HATE you. How much poison and sadness has news of your pitiful attention seeking act released in to the world. You are a waste of space.

If I was lucky enough to meet you then you would learn the meaning of sadism. My plan would involve large fish hooks, duct tape and road rash.

Whoever is covering up for the "it" - what... goes round....... y'all be sorry. Another case of why NZers should be armed imo. We shoot killer dogs so...

I wish I could think of a way to stop people from hurting animals. These actions are sick and I can't understand why anyone would want to hurt an animal.

If only NZ had an eye for an eye policy.

It's bad enough that the animal was starved and obviously abused and/or neglected during its pitiful life, but to have its life ended in such a callous manner is disgusting. And to know it scratched at the tree trying to get down, that sickens me.

I remember talking to my cousin (the bald, tattooed guy off the SPCA shows) about animal cruelty and he said that he can deal with people who love or hate animals but the ones he had no time for were the ones who had absolutely no feelings for animals because they were the ones who could torture animals with no problem. I suppose it's the same with humans and how they treat others - if you don't have some empathy for others, you can subject them to horrific treatment.

I don't know what the answer is but animal cruelty is one thing I will not tolerate and if I ever see it happening, I will speak out or do something immediately.

I completely agree. I would dearly love to string them up to a tree and let a dog nibble at their dangly bits.

I care for my pets very much. I even have a pet lamb that calls out and runs up to the fence when I come home. The others are paddock-mowers and future dinner.

Although, I just fired my burmese cats... they failed to catch a mouse I have been hunting for since 6am this morning. Dam rain brings all the rodents into the house!... and cat flaps.... "look what I caught!!"

The pictures on TV One news on Friday night were just awful, almost beyond belief. The dog had apparently struggled really hard to get free cause the bark on the tree was all scrapped off. It makes me feel sick just to think about what that poor dog had been through!!!

Tempted to do the same to our cats! One kept sniffing around a pile of magazines in my study yesterday but then curled up on a beanbag and went to sleep. Later one of the kittens came in and went to the same pile of magazines so I moved them and found a mouse! Very alive and very active, so I caught it and put it outside. Where no doubt it will get cold again and head inside to that nice warm house with the fire!

Shelby is going to be encouraged to head up into the roof space tomorrow as there is a whole family of mice up there and I can hear them. Ain't it grand to live in the country where all the wildlife think 'your house is my house!'
