View Full Version : Aquarists needed!

Ok, well I have finally found a flat, and moving house in a couple of weeks (FYI - room available to rent). I have decided to strip my aquarium down and set up a marine tank, instead of moving everything to the new location (which will be hard on the fish and the ecosystem).

So.. heres the delio... who wants some fish!?

Heres what is up for grabs:

A breeding pair of South American Cichlids (Geophagus brasiliensis, Chromis brasiliensis)

Adult female Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)

About a dozen Xiphophorus hellerii (swordtail).
One Koolie Loach

Also Plants:

Echinodorus Amazonicus [Amazon Sword] (3 separate plants)
Vallisneria Spiralis (dozen separate plants)
Cambomba Piauhyensis (dozen separate plants)
Rotala Macrandra (3 plants)
Assorted grassess

These plants require CO2 injection into the water and very strong lighting in order to flourish. They are not plants for beginners.

I want them to all go to a good home, so only people who can supply the correct water chemistry for them will get them.

If no-one from here wants them (they can be safely shipped as far as Wellington) they will be sold to my local aquarium shop.

I know there is a few 'enthusiasts' like me on here so I thought it prudent to offer here first.

This setup is my pride and joy (after my bikes), and it is hard to let them go after so long. But I have always wanted to setup a marine tank after 15 years of keeping tropicals. So now I find myself in an ideal position to set up a marine tank in my new house!!!

If you lived closer I'd send my old lady your direction... She just started up her tropical fish tank about 6 months or so ago....

She started off with a fair few fish.. Now only has about four...

Lets just say..... Her red tail shark... He's a hungry little sucker... :shit:

Im very curious as to what other fish she had that were "eaten"? Red tailed sharks are indeed predatory, but only towards their own kind or fish that resemble themsleves; this is why they are usually kept singly in the community aquarium.

What are those real pretty ones.. Gouramis and the little Neons.. Would bite chunks out of the Gouramis and eat the little Neons whole.. You'd find little skeletons in the bottom of the tank.. We even seen it do it.. Chases them in the tank and attacks them... Mum now has a Siamese fighting fish and the red tail shark even attacks him..

She doesn't want the red tail shark anymore cause she can't keep any other fish he just attacks them all and chases them around the tank all day..

Need more information. Do you have a picture of the fish? Im sorry, but it does not sound like a red tail shark now.

If you was closer, I would request a water sample. But thats not really practical. :innocent:

Ok, is there plenty of cover in the form of decor? Plants, rockwork etc? They need to establish a territory, it sounds like every fish in the tank is being seen as a threat. This can happen if the tank is tool small, or incorect food is being given, or if there is not enough 'cover' for all the fish to hide in and give the shark a clear territory. Try "reseting" the territory by performing a 20% water change and re-arranging the entire tank - move rockwork into new formations, diferent locations etc etc.

Move everything around at once, dont forget to change 20% of the water. Do this then add any new fish at the same time or there will be no point!

ooh fishies! I'm keen to get a couple of fish, i enjoyed it when i had razor, the goldfish heh... just that i tend to go away heaps, and don't want the little ones to die!

i loved watching the fish in the unitec vet reception when i was there last week though, they're all so cool! they got new ones too, i cant remember the names, but some were like the ones that you have disco... then they had an angel fish which tends to attack all the smaller ones, he's really old and has his own territory which he never lets any of the others into... which is difficult for the others coz its right in the middle of the tank lol...

A marine tank is more work to keep balanced isn't it?

Much more work. Constant monitoring and much more complex. After keeping many biotypes its time to enter into marines!

I wouldnt if I was you... "ornamental" fish usually have had all sorts of chemical medications pumped into them over the years, compound that with selective breeding and their diet.... you end up with fish I would not even feed my cat.

The cichlid family are one of the few species that will actually look 'out' of their tank and look around the room. They will even learn what their 'feeder' looks like... they will sometimes eye ball me when they want food!!

one thing, how were the fish transported? (just coz im curious to find out if there are any interesting methods used)

Special plastic bags which have the bottom corners sealed off.

1/3 water and 2/3 air in each bag. Keep them as dark as possible during their time in the bag.

Curious_AJ
15th June 2007, 16:06
ah, cool, so the conventional method, its supposed to be the safest way to transport them as well _b.

what do you think about keeping axylotyls (if you know anything about them)
A few times I've thought about keeping one or 2 of them as they're so interesting and rather exotic...

if you do know anything about them, do they tend to interact much in a normal tank situation? (i've only ever seen them floating with their legs splayed in the pet shop) and would they be fresh water?

if you know anything, that would be awesomeo, if not, i'll have to search the wonderful www :D

edit:which i have found out from that they are actually cichlids.. ooh.. i love the www

Curious_AJ
15th June 2007, 16:12
wait.. or are they non-cichlids... damn it.. people on websites are confusing me!!

Disco Dan

They will stay "fish" and eat a variety of 'meaty' foods. You can make them metamorphasise (spelling) when you add iodine to the water....

Curious_AJ
15th June 2007, 16:21
ooh! how cool is that!! so like.. what do they metamorphosize into? some sort of gaul-bladder eating monster? lol...

yeah, i saw this blog of this guy that owns an axylotyl... and he did an experiment (which looked REALLY cruel!) he chopped off a leg of his every few days, and fed it to the axylotyl!!! and seeming as it re grew the limb, he said it didnt , matter and didnt hurt!! what a bastard.. here's a pic of his one eating its own leg...

Disco Dan
15th June 2007, 16:27
Yes they are born without legs and lungs etc etc... add iodine to the water and it will grow legs and develop the ability to breathe above water.

Often used in high school experiments as it shows how evolution works etc.

Fasinating creatures really.

Curious_AJ
15th June 2007, 16:38
yeah, i just learned that they are a type of salamander which stays in larval form... how awesome... omg.. i think i'm hooked on them.. i want a spotty one, or black one.. i think ive seen some for sale for about $30... hmm.. i shall think about that...

i never used to think water creatures were that interesting. then in 7th form i began exploring... my god.. i'm so wowed...

Had a bit to do with these things...Aparently they live in the amazon. And grow to a very large size.....Also breath out of water....Worked in the freezing works years ago ,,and got talking to a MAF guy about them.....He said if you feed them thyroid glands they will develope into a massive size...Dunno..never tryed it.....Must be something in the food there that makes them big and able to live out of water....Mind u DD said they did have a set of lungs........Interesting

Curious_AJ
15th June 2007, 22:03
lolz, well they are amphibious, so they would be able to breath air... as they are a type of salamander... yeah, i did my research today... they're really interesting! (as you know ive said heaps, but its true!) they're kind of like koi, the way they grow apparently, the size of the tank is a big factor or something...

Its really cool how they can regrow limbs and stuff... awesome stuff.. gotta love these little cuties!
