Excellent directions, all male's will understand . Probably loose Goblin with instructions that simple. Women need the GPS coords. And don't forget the weather forecast, so they know what to wear.

 cheeky, but not entirely untrue...for most of us. Although I'm sure we biker chicks are mostly exceptions to that rule...

Gawd, it feels like I'm going to be spending my weekend ferreting out all the Kbers...
Trying to think of some really obvious item of clothing i could wear so you all know who I am and come introduce yourselves!

*and no, I will not go half starkers...:dodge:*

Have just bought a lighter socket that attaches to battery for our air bed pump, so if anyone wishes to borrow, will be on site around 3 pm Friday.

We camp at the bottom of the hill-climb paddock, in front of the drain ( if that makes sense)

The Orient Express will be on the road down that way (KB sticker on the front screen) , but will be stopping at the Ohingaiti Pub for the night, so I'll "see you on the road". Guys - I have been in Waiouru all week, up here teaching soldiers about Exchange Server. It is has been raining on and off all week, the ground is pretty wet. So make sure you have good ground cover inside your tent and probably something to put your side-stand on before it sinks gracefully in to the ground.

and probably something to put your side-stand on before it sinks gracefully in to the ground.
And a piece of timber about 350mm long to ram under the swingarm from the ground to support the motorcycle from the otherside helps too, incase the wind pops up, or people getting too close.

Great weekend - despite discovering last night/this morning that my tent leaks. Had a great time catching up with Goblin, Phantom, EddieB and Carver again, was pleased to meet Meekey_Mouse, Ian, tri boy, Spud1000, littlesweetie2006 and a few others whose names/handles I can't recall.

Rode down with Roj and a friend of ours (Duncan) while Roj's wife, Liz followed in the car (still has not recovered enough from her accident to contemplate riding pillion, let alone riding a bike there) along with her friend, Vanessa.

We set up our tent community on the Friday and EddieB (Liz's brother) turned up on Saturday and pitched his tent with ours. Turned out we were only a couple of tents away from tri boy and spud and across the "road" from Phantom.

What a crap time I had,I really enjoyed the ride down although the 'Bacon' was rather prolific must have passed at least six of them including a camera and that was on the way there.
Friday nite really screwed it up for me as I drank like there was no tomorrow, boy did I pay for it thereafter! (makes a mental not to himself:next year remember ther'e two nites to contend with!)
Anyway I drank most of Saturday and hit the sack early, missed most of the activities that nite, but woke up with a very clear head.

The ride back was boring as we took Desert road and from Tirau we cut off across to Ngatea, where we stopped off for a beer with a mate of mine, from there we went to Kaiaua for fish n chips and ended it off with a good blast through the twistys back home.

P.S. I did bump into Tide and 007XX at the burnouts.

Till next year!

Had a great time at my first ColdKiwi.
Interesting to see how quickly you can fall off a Harley in the mud, certainly made some of those tuff guys slow down when riding the steel horse through the village.
I was just wrapped that I got my little bike all the way to the road without any slipages on Sunday, that drive got pretty muddy.

I had a go at doing my first burnout ever in the burnout competition. The owner of last years RAT bike competition (GSX750) asked if I'd like to have a go at burning out a tyre, so thought why not.
He was trying to beat the bikes record from last year by burning out 14 tyres.
What a buzz highly recommend having a go at burning out a tyre, esp on someone elses bike.
Was surprised to see the Harley that was first up won the competition He only had it in 1st gear, but I guess it did take the longest to pop at 2mins and those pipes where red hot. Some of the others got their bikes nearly over 14,000 revs and through the gears.

I was the only girl to enter the burnout competition this year and it has given me burnout fever. Now going to look at maybe building my own RAT bike to take to next years ColdKiwi and pop somemore tyres :2guns:

PS: If any of you out there have got any pics of the burnout comp would love to see them.

I got the security to drag one guy into a tent, outside which he was comatose, about 2:00am Sat morn, a guy went off the road coming down the Gentil Annie hill on Napier Taihape Rd, went off the road, gassed it on the grass, lost it on regripping the tarseal, another behind him had to lay his MC down to avoid him, 2 bikes down. Two guys giving a verbal exchange in the wee hours of Sat morning, then a sharp crack noise, (wonder what?) then blissful silence the rest of the night, so you didn't do too bad after all.

The Cold Kiwi 2007 opened up at 15:00 on Friday 31st August. I got there about 15:30 after travelling up on my own from Wellington just after midday. It wasn’t hard to find, I just followed the swarm of other bikes travelling at various speeds in the general direction.

The dirt track from the road dipped and wound for quite a distance until I started to think I’d maybe missed a turn, but then I went round a corner and the site opened up into a valley with a stunning view of Mt Ruapehu. I rode around looking for a suitable spot to plant the tent and finally found a suitable spot. Luckily I chose somewhere near the edge of the trees which kept the worst of the cold wind off and not too much poo on the ground…which was nice.

After I eventually got the tent up I was asked over to join a small group living in the tents behind me (who had a big fire). They welcomed me over and handed me a nice can of contraband (BYO alcohol being forbidden by the organizers who were under strict instructions from the ever helpful boys in blue). The group who adopted me had travelled down from Auckland for their second Cold Kiwi and turned out to be the epitome of bikerdom. Very welcoming, a bit bad, slightly mad and knew how to have a laugh. Thanks again guys.

A couple of blokes turned up soon after with their big 4x4 wagon with all their kit in.
A few lads near my group took a distinct disliking to this (there being a no car rule - it's a bike rally after all). The disgruntled bikers had no problem airing their views.
The outstanding comment I heard was "if you don't ride it, F-off"!!!!

The bar opened at 17:00 on the Friday evening so we got on it and I carried on till about 11. There were a couple of stalls knocking out grub, which didn’t do a bad job. One was open 24 hours which was dam handy. The lovely ladies did a magnificent job, even if they couldn’t remember my order. One time I ended up settling for a steak and onion sandwich instead of the bacon and egg roll I’d ordered, but hey, life’s too short when you’re half cut and hungry.

There was a band on Fri who were rather good. Plenty of energy, decent sounds and played the kind of tracks that everyone wanted to jump around to like a paranoid wasp on speed.

I got up at about 07:00 on the Saturday morning having been woken up by a chap who found the red-line at about 06:30 (thanks whoever you were). I had a small hangover on the Sat morning cause one of my group kept handing out the bourbon…which it would've seemed rude not to partake in. Well that’s my excuse.

I found out on Saturday morning that on the Friday night some idiot had tried to nick one of the organising club's motorcycles.
Apparently someone had nicked it and stashed it over in some trees some way away; presumably for moving on later when the place was quiet.
That was NOT a good idea. Especially when there were soooo many people there who share the same biking passion.
I understand from talking to one of the organisers on the Saturday afternoon that the bike had been found and the culprit caught.
The organiser wouldn't say if he got a kicking, but I bet he didn't walk out of there with everything in tact. Probably a bloody mess I'd of thought.
Rule number one: Don't mess with other peoples bikes!
Rule number two: Have as much fun as you want, but don't mess with other peoples bikes!
Rule number three: Have as much fun as you want, but don't touch the women (a deffo BYO situation I found this year at the Cold Kiwi, except for the terminally brave/dumb), AND DON'T MESS WITH OTHER PEOPLES BIKES!
(Thus endeth the lesson)

One character soon caught my eye had a 750cc sports bike that was a bit of a rat.
No fairing left and it was in a bit of a state. Not much of an exhaust…etc.
He'd taken off the normal road/racing tyres you would expect on this sort of bike and had substituted knobbly motor cross tyres.
His main skill seemed to be holding on the front break so the bike would move forwards slowly and spinning the back wheel as fast as possible.
He was digging some serious trenches.
The muck flying off the back end was quite impressive, especially if you were in the way and got covered…as many people did. All in good fun though.
He didn't seem to have a centre or side stand on the bike and to park it simply locked the front wheel and span the back end until it dug into the ground down to the chain. Then simply got off and walked away.
He was a keen contender in the hill climbing event giving it full bore, and made it a reasonable way up until the bike dug in and gave up.
I was so impressed with his exploits that I gave him the nickname 'Mr Plough' (similar to Homer in that Simpsons episode).
Mr Plough was a large chap and for some reason I felt the need to tell him of his newly acquired name.
He'd dug his bike in and I introduced myself by enquiring whether he considered that the bike was 'parked'.
I then respectfully told him his new nickname.

The events kicked off just after midday with the hill climb which was a great spectacle and there were two hills to choose from:
1) The very steep: 'you're probably going to die hill' on the right, and:
2) The incredibly steep: 'you're going to die and probably take your friends/family with you hill' on the left.
I really enjoyed the hill climb. No shortage of bottle these people.
Loads of different bikes took part from purposeful trail bikes, trail pit bikes, hybrid road bikes (with knobbly trail tyres), through to proper road racing bikes with street tyres. The road bikes with road tyres were especially good for the fun loving nutters who didn’t care whether they crashed out as long as they got the furthest up the hill. One contender was a young 10 year old lad who had great courage for his age and quite rightly got a big cheer from the crowd. My particular favourite was the hybrids, especially the big sports bikes with hard suspension and no problem finding the red-line. “GO MR PLOUGH”!

There were a load of other good events. They included a wheelie competition (some impressive skills especially some chap on one of the hybrids), a slow race, catch the weenie, and the hill run.
The hill run had to be done in a helmet…erm, and that’s the only rule. Any other clothing is up to you. One adventurous chap dashed of first showing an unhealthy amount of arse crack and earned the name ‘Cheeky’ from the chap on the tannoy.

At 17:00 on the Saturday evening it was time for the burn-out competition.
It started in good fashion with a Harley and some top bikes gave it plenty.
In a similar vein to the now legendary Mr Plough, some chaps had a similarly powerful hybrid road bike with knobbly tires instead of road tyres. I think it had been a VFR in a former life but that’d been a long time ago and it was now a top contender for ‘Rat Bike of the Day’.
They’d entered the hill climb earlier and the wheelie competition and were clearly one of the maddest groups. In addition to Mr Plough's attributes though, this group bought a stack of complete back wheels for the burn out. Must've been over a dozen complete tyres+rims.
They burnt out the lot and made a hell of a stink.
You couldn't see for the smoke.
I nicknamed this crew the 'Burn-out Brothers' (not as funny as Mr Plough but I guess I was running out of funny by this point).
I timed one which went on for over 4 minutes.
Quite impressive if you consider that the back wheel must’ve been running at around 200kph!!!
The tyres that were completely bald at the start died somewhat sooner though.
Some of the tyres really let go in the end with a very satisfying bang.
One ripped completely in half.
True to form, the Burn-out Brothers didn't stop when the tyres popped and ground the rims which made a shower of sparks fly out the back end.
Absolute carnage!
There was also a company there who had an offer on, you could pay $50 and some bloke would take off your good road tyre, chuck on an old tyre for you to burn-out, and then chuck your good tyre back on again afterwards.
Good value if you fancy giving it a go I guess.

There was another good band on the Saturday night and a load more drinks, but I was conscious of the alcohol level for the following morning so stopped drinking at about 22:30 and hit the hay about 11. There was a lot more people watching the band on the Saturday night who had travelled up on the Saturday morning and the tent was completely packed. The band again carried on until around midnight.

The weather was fine all weekend until about 23:30 on the Saturday night.
It absolutely hammered down and the strong wind made my tent move around quite a bit. Glad I was snug in my sleeping bag under the cover of the tent.
Next morning I awoke at about 6:30 and the place was like a quagmire.
Putting all the kit away was a bit of a bind in the wind and rain but I managed ok with some help from my new found mates that I met on the Friday afternoon.
Riding out of the place was a real adventure on road tyres because the long track out of the place was awash with sludgy mud and rocks.
I took it easy and made it out in one piece. Others were not so lucky.
I saw one poor chap with his lady and all the gear on the back, taking it easy but must’ve hit a slippery rock covered in loose mud and the front end washed out. I imagine the language inside the helmet was somewhat colourful.
I eventually set off and a couple of bikes over took me as I plodded nervously out of the site and down the long winding track, but I let them go thinking I'd just be happy to make it out without dropping the bike like the other poor sods. It wasn’t too bad once you got going; you just had to take it steady.

The organisers did a great job and my sincere thanks to them. This year will certainly not be my last Cold Kiwi.

Last year after the Kiwi, as we were packing up, we were offered a lift for all our gear in SCMC van, which made the ride home a little less strenuous. If it makes the weekend more fun and easier for large groups then I reckon its ok. A lot of clubs have members who cant ride for whatever reason but they still want to attend. At least the cars/utes/vans only drop gear off then have to park out the gate.
This year it was back to lugging all the gear on the bikes tho.

Nice write up Mk1. Good to see the Kiwi viewed through fresh eyes. After going to a fair few over the years it takes a lot of effort to stop getting jaded.

A first for me was taking my 12 year old son on the trip. He handled the 800km pretty well and says he enjoyed himself. The ride back was a good way to spend Father's Day.

Yeah - they really don't get it do they. I mean I can understand trailering rat bikes and trail bikes but all your luxuries too? If you can't fit it on your bike, you don't fucking need it!
It can depend upon the situation. I traveled down with Roj and Duncan on the bikes and Lizzie brought a car and trailer. Travelling in the car with Lizzie was Vanessa, whose bike is out of commission.

Those following other threads would recall that Roj's wife, Lizzie, spent last year's CK in hospital after a horrendous accident that bloody-near destroyed her and she was certainly incapable of even riding pillion this year, let alone riding her own bike down (shit, she hasn't even got any gear left as the paramedics cut everything except her gloves and socks to bits).

So Roj and Duncan stuck all their gear in the car and had a great ride down unencumbered while I carried my panniers and tent down on the back of my bike.

We set up camp and had a few "creature comforts" that could not be carried on a bike - such as a large LPG bottle for the lantern and gas cooker and the bed (which ensured Lizzie was able to get a comfortable night's sleep) but most of the stuff we had could have been carried on bikes if all of our party had been able to ride.

On Saturday I loaned Vanessa my bike and she had a great time zapping around the paddocks on it and showed me a few off-road riding techniques (she's a far better off-road rider than I am) and Lizzie even took my bike for a short ride to see how she coped with it - it's only the second bike she's ridden since the accident and the last ride she had left her in intense pain for hours afterwards, Fortunately she coped well with the ride with no nasty side-effects.

Lizzie was able to catch up with her brother, EddieB, when he turned up

On Sunday when it came to packing it was great knowing I could just cram my gear hurriedly into the panniers with no attempt at waterproofing and sling them into the back of the car then shove my saturated tent into the trailer.

Roj, Duncan and I rode home unencumbered and it was great to just blat home from the site with nothing to worry about and just enjoy the ride.

Vanessa rode my bike from Te Kuiti to Te Awamutu as I figured she'd enjoy a decent ride on the road (I still remember being without a bike and how stir-crazy I got).

So, without the car, two avid, talented, bikers would have missed out on the Cold Kiwi and they (and the rest of us) would not have had nearly as much fun.

Things are seldom "black and white". Yes, it's a biker convention, but not all avid bikers are able to ride there on a bike due to one thing and another.

Riding home, I was thinking of the group of bikers we met last year who were riding down with nothing on their bikes - in fact, at first I thought it was a bunch of mates heading out for a short day trip.

They explained to us that every second year they throw all their gear in a van loaded with creature comforts - chairs, table, gazebo, larger tents etc etc and live in luxury; on the other years they take only what they can carry on the bikes.

Flicking my unladen bike around the twisty roads and grinning like a maniac, I could really understand their way of thinking.

[QUOTE=Wolf;1191377] and the bed (which ensured Lizzie was able to get a comfortable night's sleep)

There were a few scruffy bikers that had evil intentions towards hijacking that big ol big.
Fortunately, they got so pissed, they barely managed to crawl into their own tent.

Re: Cars on site. Most were up top, but there does seem to be quite a lot these days.
But CK isn't a BYO everything anymore type of rally, so its to be expected. Still a bloody good time.

Since I have had the armchair I am unable to carry the amount of gear that I was once able to two up due to the physical size restrictions of the hard luggage. Only thing that could be done was to build a trailer to tow behind the bike. Now one can have few creature comforts without all that weight on the back, makes entering the site a little less of a mission these days.

Yeah, a trailer for the bike would be a good idea. What's it like to haul one behind a motorcycle? Doesn't affect it too badly?

Yeah, a trailer for the bike would be a good idea. What's it like to haul one behind a motorcycle? Doesn't affect it too badly?

Last year the swivel hitch induced too much sway into the trailer over 80kph so this year I had the hitch welded up as a normal hitch. Immeadiate improvement. The trailer just sat behind the bike I hardly noticed it on the straights, though around the corners I had to slow down as the lean angle is limited to the movement on the tow ball. Corners with a speed posted sign needed to slow down for otherwise it was a sedate cruise even being able to overtake slower traffic.

To overcome the lean angle restriction a single wheel trailer would be the way to go.

Thanks for that Wolf:first:

Liz and I have been regulars at the kiwi since 2000, as said, Liz was involved in a serious accident last year, she has 7 plates/ rods and 35 screws holding things together, so yes it was great to have my lady with me again this year, we probably were somewhat over the top with what we bought down but it was all for having a good time.

My lady has been a biker for a long time, because of the accident she had to get her car license this year so she could have some transport to get around:weep:

I thought the Kiwi was a bit quieter this year, not as many interesting bikes to see, will have to do something about that next year,

and of course, the only way to get a rat bike there is by trailer.

Was a good event as always

YEP!

Friday night (OK, Saturday morning) I had my thin quilt under me and I kept waking up with my sinuses clogged and took ages getting back to sleep.

Consequently, Saturday afternoon I was knackered and elected to have a sleep so I'd be able to go the distance on Saturday night.

Again kept waking up with blocked sinuses and feeling sore until I grabbed my leggings, rolled them into a makeshift pillow to lift my head up (I prefer to sleep on my side and my head was angled down to the side) and was abe to get a better sleep but it still wasn't the best.

Sunday morning I slept on a spare air mattress that Vanessa had brought along and used my leggings as a pillow once more - had a much easier time of getting to sleep (once I mastered the knack of moving about on an air mattress without catapulting myself off the thing).

So it was only the rain coming in when the tent started leaking that woke me up and kept me awake for ages.

So, yeah, air mattress - and a waterproof tent - next time...

Was at the prize giving, didn't hear anything about no BYO, I've been told I suffer from "Selective Hearing Syndrome" anyway I drank my BYO all weekend and caused no problems and don't think anyone else would have noticed either. I however did notice that the "Sky was falling" especially about 1am, I think it was that time anyway, cos next morning I had a memory problem. A good Kiwi anyway. Next year we probably won't be allowed drum fires cos of the damage to the environment. But who is going to listen to that aye ! normal people will understand what I'm on about.

They'd have to get a special license to sell liquor every year anyway.

It is my understanding that the RMCC was cleared of any wrong doing by the coroner. So it's a bit off that they were then effectively punished though with the tougher restrictions, particularly the no BYO.

When they apply next year, I'm damn well going to make a submission in their favour if possible, and I'd encourage everyone else to do the same.

The application would come under the Taupo DC in the Turangi/Tongariro ward if I'm not mistaken.
