Hi
I've shipped my XT600 ahead of me and will be arriving to live around Christchurch in August. Be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of a decent dealer/outlet for Yam spares, as I sure I'll soon need some...
Can't wait to trailride in NZ, quite different from the nadgery lanes I'm used to in Cornwall UK!
Cheers Bish
Welcome to the nuthouse!
Hope you enjoy your trip over.
There are a few places around to get spares from & its not always necessary to go to Yamaha dealers. Try Superiors, Pit Lane, Budgets, Dirt Action, Yamaha Linwood, Yamaha Bob McCleary.....
There are plenty of mud pluggers about the place that are bound to be along soon.
They'll may have any I missed or know the better ones for Yamaha.

Welcome aboard mate, your XT will be a great tool for exploring NZ. There's quite a few dirty minded riders from Chch on here, hook up with them & you'll definitely have some fun.
Cheers

Hi there. Welcome to the site.
Next weekend (i.e. the 30/1st) I'm organising a ride up the north side of the Waimak to Oxford and back. Like to the thread here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=51855) Should be some mud holes, gravel, coffee and cake (in Oxford) if your interested. There are gravel roads along side the trail if the mud is too much but I doubt it given some of the pics on the KTRC page. We will be riding some sealed roads so need road reg but suspect the XT may be?
So far there is two DR650s, possibly a third and a slowly getting not so nice and shiny Transalp in on it.
As for Yamy shops I ride a Suzi so dont ask me! :D

It's the "arriving to live around Christchurch in August" bit that may cause a problem next weekend.

Just don't get too close to the back of the Plug roosters F650 if he's there.
Actually think he has retired the Dakar for some timely servicing at the moment.

Might be the odd puddle or two on the tracks but if too much you can just head to and along the gravel roads running parallel a hundred meters or so away. Trannys are made to be dirty anyway aren't they?

Yep last time I spoke to him he was retiring the Dakar for a couple of months to do some servicing. Havent heard how its going but not expecting him to be on the road for a while.

Guys
Thanks for the info - sounds like there's lots going on, so will have to get the XT out of the crate and get it's wof and reg sorted PDQ. Cornwall is full of slippery slate and steep climbs so we run the bikes on trials tyres rear and enduro on the front (interesting on sealed road!) so I guess I'll be swapping the back for a more enduro based thing - I run an 18" rear rim and have used IRC's on the back that are ok for it's and weight and grip pretty well - if anyone has feedback about what tyre's useful around the Chrch area, then please let me know.

You just opened a can of worms!!! Lots of debate about tyres here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=31920). If you want to go fanging off road lots then I'm not really sure but there are some aggressive Kenda's that are DOT. Not sure what they are called though but Plug ran some reciently. If you are more adventure/dual sport riding i.e. ~50/50 to ~30/70 off road then there are tyres like the Dunlop D606, Mitas E-09, Pirelli MT21. If more roady then the usual tyres marketed as adventure tyres i.e. trailwings, etc (I'm not that familiar with this type of tyre).
Another tyre that gets sold locally is a Shenko R244. Its cheep, you get about 6000kms out of it and is not to bad on all the gravel we have around the south island. Will handle a small amount of mud and sand but is no enduro tyre.

Hi Bish,
Welcome to the site, are you coming to Christchurch on a working holiday or for permanent stay? Weather here in August should have you feeling right at home Lol! Lots of great rides for adventure bikes in reasonable proximity to Christchurch so you've made a good choice. Keep in touch when you arrive there are usually like minded riders posting rides most weekends that you can hook up with to see the country side

Thanks for the advice and encouragement! I'm here permanently from August (the 20+ temp to freezing will be a bit of shock !) and will be keen to get out trailriding once the bike's WOF'd and REG'd. On the tyres front, I might go for the IRC-TR8 on the back; as I've used one in the UK and it was cheap, good in mud and lasted about 5,000 miles - quite different from the trials tyre that lasts me about 1000 miles. {I'll have to get use to Km}
Be in touch when reunited with the bike.
Cheers Bish

We're here! The XT certified/reged after a bit of tinkering, so should be up for trail riding in a week or two. A couple more questions (If anyone can help):
- What road bits do you have to run on a trail bike? I had to put on the indicators, mirrors, rear pegs and reflector to get it imported... in the UK it was ok to junk the lot, which certainly stops things getting broken when you drop it... If you have to run indicators, does anyone know a source of small strong ones!
- I'm also after a new pair of boots as my A'stars are shot... any good (&cheap) places recommended in Christchurch?
Thanks & look forward to hitting the trails.. Bish

Welcome to our world.
For trail riding where you trailer the bike to the off road bit you don't really need any of that stuff.
Any time you take it on a road, be it sealed, shingle, or paper of your list I think you need one mirror, all the indicators, a tail reflector.
Only need the passenger pegs if you have a passenger on board at the time.
Where to find bits like indicators and/or boots.. I like Pitlane, sometimes Budget MC Spares and Superior MC.
Dirt Action are good for a lot of things but not so much variety in the indicator kind of range.
Sportzone Suzuki have some nice stuff too, boots etc.
Do you have a good bash plate on the XT? It is kind of a very good thing to have here, we got lots of fist sized stones just waiting to have a go at your cases or at least take the paint of ya frame under side.
You should have a quick look in all the main shops, will not take long.
They all do boots too. Different shops have different boots. .Do watch the prices though.
Pitlane, Casbolts Honda, Sportzone Suzuki and several other shops are in Manchester St between Moorhouse Ave. and St Asaph St.
The BMW/Yamaha Dealer called 'Canterbury Rides' is in Ferry Rd near Fitzgearld Ave. (nice stuff there too)
Superior MC is at 297 Cashel St.
Dirt Action is off Cashel St at 32 Saxxon St. (one of my favorite places for stuff and help)
Budget MC is 334 Wilsons Rd. near Jade Stadium.
There are a few others but these are the ones predominant in my mind.

You have to have mirrors, indicators, and reflector. Dont have to have rear pegs unless you have a pillion.
Try Budget Motorcycle spares at 334 Wilsons Road , Pit Lane at 65 Manchester Street, Street and Sport right next to Pit Lane for boots and indicators.

Thanks guys - I can check out the Christchurch bike stores and get kitted with some new boots and hopefully some bashproof indicators. The XT sports a very dented CRD bashplate, Cornwall has pretty impressive rocks too!, so ready to go. I'll see how the enduro front and trial rear tyres like the NZ dirt...
