I recently bought an Oxford disc lock - looked good, read good thing about them etc,,, so got one from trademe. got it home and the bugger didnt fit my gn250. Now no big deal cos my mate just bought a motorbike and gonna sell it on to him - but anyone else got a GN250 with a disc lock and can tell me the make and model of lock so i dont get burned again? otherwise im going for a chain.

Cheers in advance!

i don't see your problem here, who the hell is going to steal a gn250.

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>Hell if I was a ne'er-do-well I would; there's heaps of them in only a few colours, they have a high turnover rate, and they sell for consistent prices. I would've thought they'd be a very good target.

haha you cheeky shit! :)
I am just a bit wary as ive already had my flat broken into a couple of weeks ago and they stole an imac worth the same amount as the bike - if they'd go to all that trouble to get in and steal that, im quite sure the buggers would just as easily swipe something sitting out on the road (no garage or anywhere else to park).

And right now its my only form of transport to get to work so i cant afford to lose her! :third:

Thats real imaginative Mark. I was wondering which broken record was going to post this.

Drill a hole in the disc so that the first one you brought fits :)

Buy an ordinary padlock that fits the disc......lots cheaper and just as effective as a disc lock.

I recently bought an Oxford disc lock -

I don't use a disk lock since my wife forgot hers and came off. There's another type of lock that goes around the throttle and holds the brake handle in. It's highly visible so you won't forget it (I would've done several times by now).

Check it out here: http://www.motoretail.co.nz/product.cfm?ID=5027

Do disk locks really deter thieves? Genuinely asking for people's opinions here, not just trying to be smart.

Just wondering, because once I lost my bike key and I'd left it in steering lock mode so you couldn't roll it forward, and my husband and I just manhandled the bike (SV650) on to the trailer. It took all of a couple of minutes, we made no noise and had the bike tied down and we're away, both thinking rather soberly about how easy it would be to steal a bike.

I'm thinking one of those supposedly uncuttable cable locks might be the way to go - or are they overrated as well?

Do disk locks really deter thieves?

Nothing's going to stop a really determined thief, a proper thief. Ground anchors, multiple locks, etc, he'll get through them if he's keen on a high-value bike.

But for the Joe Average thief it'll stop him, make him look for an easier target. Why bugger around getting a disc lock off when there'll be a bike at the next house with no lock?
And it'll stop those South Auckland youths in hoodies from screwdriving your ignition and taking it for a joyride then burning it.

Make those lazy scum work for their supper, use a disc lock. They are probably on a benefit anyway, it'll do them good to have a bit of a workout.

Hmmm, if it is that much of a big deal, park the bike inside (I'm sure if you asked people would volunteer pics).
Tell the wife she has to sleep outside, there is only room for you and the bike inside.
Then she might change her mind about renting somewhere ridiculous without a garage.
Give her the disclock for protection whilst she sleeps on the footpath.
I think you need to get your priorities in check, mate.

...Joyride....GN250.... does not compute.

@OP - In all seriousness. Perhaps you should invest in one of those SteelMate alarms (PM Kneescraper for more info).

Head down to your local bike shop and try them all until you find one that fits ...

Shit, there is no pity left in this world! You'd think if you had a GN outside they'd think you were worse off than them and leave you something (albeit probably from your neighbour).

On a serious note, why didnt it fit? I use a kryptonite disc lock and its long enough to fit most bikes I would have thought...along with a nice bright curly chord to ensure I dont flop over the handle bars when I take off.

my 86 gn had both sidecovers removed one night when it was parked outside work. id only just replaced the second one when i got hit by that car. waste of $20. lol.

a serious note, dulux. to prevent your side covers either getting stolen or else coming off, drill a hole in each side, and run a zip tie through it. my mates one flicked off at around 100k... nearly got me in the face. he didnt even notice.

aye the disc itself curves round inside just before the hole - so to fit, the gap in the lock would have to be about an inch so it would fit over the rounded disc. shitty design really since most other bikes seem to be mostly flat on that part :(

good man! ive also seen sidecovers attached with a bolt, washer and chain, but i didnt get a look at how the chain was held to the frame. the zip ties are a bitch to put on, but will save you $$ in the long run
