Ok I went into the city today and bought myself a new oil filter, tommorow I need to drain the oil and remove the exhaust and the panel in the picture to get at the old filter. Trouble is, I have no idea how to drain the oil on this bike. Take a look at the pictures attached and see for yourself, anyone know how to drain the oil?

have you got any pics of the other side??
I'm trying to remember, so i'm not sure, that the zeal (same engine) had a plug on the left hand side

My VTR has the drain plug on the left, so it stands to reason that this totally unrelated bike has it in exactly the same place.

With my FZR600 you have remove the exhaust system to get at the oil sump drain plug and the oil filter. Bloody bad design. Could yours be the same?

Also, here's some tyres if you need them. $130 for front and rear Pirellis:

I have a FiZzeR too. It is directly above the exhaust behind the gear lever 17mm (I think). I leave my exhaust on so as to not create more work for myself. Just required me to use some water soluble degreaser to get it clean!!
Could try running it down a piece of plastic to avoid this though possibly??? The oil filter is not tooo bad as long as your exhaust and engine are not too hot and mine has two pipes either side. I found easiest to lie on my back on the right hand side to get at these and I think are either 4 or 5 mm allen key screws x3.
Best of luck and hope that helps

Otherside, kerryg any tips on getting that exhaust off?

Assuming your exhaust is similar it is fastened to the bike at (1) the rear (off one of the footpeg hangers) with one bolt, and (2) by another bolt under the bike around the middle of the system, both easy to get at. The headers are held by two bolts (allen head) per pipe, and on my bike are a bit tricky to get at so require a bit of patience. I used a ratchet and a short extension.Trickiest part is fitting the gaskets (you're supposed to fit new gaskets each time...but I didn't).After a bit of trial and error I found that the easy way was to fit the headers loosely onto the studs, leaving a gap of a cm or so, just big enough to push all 4 of the gaskets in to (it's not easy when you have fingers the size of saveloys, but it is possible!) and then push in and loosely bolt the headers into place. You need about 3 arms to do this because you really need to rebolt at (2) at this point or at least somehow support the weight of the exhaust. Afer that it's just a matter of bolting everything back up to the proper torque settings or (in my case) "firmly". My Taiwanese torque wrench is not trustworthy....

Hooray! I'm so glad I don't have an FZR! Dismantling the bike to change the erl?!? Whatever will those clever Japanese engineers think of next? And I thought having the oil filter on my Pajero above the alternator was bad enough!

Magua - just make sure you use synthetic or semi-synth if you drain the erl with the zorst in place, so you get a nice aroma when it burns off!

I think it was only the very first FZR600 (mine!!! ) which was so afflicted. Not sure about the 250. Then there's the way the carbs are mounted....bastards of things to get at..Yamaha should have stuck with making pianos maybe <_<

Course it is, well spotted Celticn06. Right so the oil will drain fully when on the sidestand. Probably just where the manual would tell you.

Seems like those clever Japanese engineers are a bit clever-er than some give them credit for.

Well judging from Kerryg s description of removing the exhaust I am damn glad I left mine right where it belongs!!! Unless you have the exhaust off already I'd advise you to leave it too.

For F5 Dave: Fizzer 250 manuals are non existent as far as I can work out. Have searched on the net and had zero luck!!!! All FZR 250s were imported "apparently" and were never released as new bikes here. Unfortunately  Some bright bugger forgot to put to put the bloody thing in the crate with the bike when they sent them

I need to take the exhaust off to get at the oil filter tommorow. Sounds like it's going to be a bitch, I don't even know what gaskets are let alone what to do with them.

I wish, but those are for a 3ln, I have a 2kr. The 3ln has a wider frame by about 3cm.

Hi there Magua. Mine is a 2KR as well but it seems your exhaust set up is a little different. My pipes go 4 into two in front of the filterthen go each side around the filter which is in the bottom of the sump. If you do have to remove your exhaust it may pay to have some exhaust cement on hand in case you cannot get things to seal properly. I have found that nearly all parts for my 2kr have to be ordered from Japan (a 3 week wait). At least if you damage any gaskets a bit of exhaust cement may help to seal it back up???? :spudwhat:

A question for you though. My face plate off my fuel tap is missing and I am not sure which way reserve is??? I think it is up for ON, pointing back for OFF and down for RES but just not real sure. I'd hate to find out though. I just know that I can do 200kms on a tank. I have geared mine up though. It had a 56 tooth sprocket on the rear, and I went for a 47 on the rear. (Because I am mainly riding open roads and by dropping the revvs a bit (from 11000 to 9500) it is a lot nicer to ride and a shitload more economical. What does yours have?

Magua

This is how I assume it works, can't say I've had to use off or reserve in the last two weeks I've owned the bike. I think the reason for the different exhausts maybe that mine has an exup exhaust. I was thinking about changing the sprocket, but the bike has recently had a new standard sprocket added. It's on my long list of things to do but it's quite a way down the list.

Hey Magua, it's kinda hard to see in the photos you posted, they're a bit dark underneath the bike, but does it look like this, or is it fairly different?

I've heard the zeal is supposed to have the same engine as the fzr250, but when I gave a guy in Red Baron the number stamped on the engine (Y-1 1HX 01) he said that it was the same engine as on an older (1985) fz250r.

The side of the engine looks fairly similar, but maybe the bottom of the crankcase is different? From the descriptions it sounds like the oil filter is installed differently at least.

In the picture, '1' is the oil drain bolt/plug, '2' just looks like a hole in the casting that I can't see the purpose of, and '3' is the oil filter.

Similar in some ways, but my oil filter is directly under the bike so you have to remove the 4 into 1 exhaust to even undo the plate which houses it. Oh my god it was hard work, took me and a friend 4-5 hours. Got the exhausts off first, when we did the gaskets just turned into ash. had to pull apart the left rear fairing to get at the exup cable just to loosen it to get the exhaust to the ground. We went out to by a tool to undo the bolt to let out the oil. Cleaned off the plate and unscrewed it to find I had the wrong filter. Just finished around 20 minutes ago. The bike doens't sound much different (if at all) than with the gaskets. I'm guessing they fell apart a long time ago.
