Turning left from Brigham Creek Rd onto SH16 this evening, after a bunch of annoying tiptoeing about on the nasty-arse wet 'n' greasy roads of today, I unwisely grabbed a little too much throttle in second gear.
Result - one sideways SRAD, one jrandom highsiding through the air with the greatest of ease, and landing on his thumb, of all things.
Compound fracture of the proximal phalange of my left thumb, plus a crack across the base of the metacarpal. My thumb is now in eight pieces instead of three. I thought it was just dislocated at the time, told concerned passersby to shove it with the idea of calling an ambulance and rode home after a quick refreshing lie-down in a ditch. The clutch pull was interesting, to say the least.
Plastic surgery at Middlemore tomorrow! I feel like a Desperate Housewife. At least they let me come back home in a cast.
The bike seems fine, apart from a bent rear brake lever and general scratches that will add to, rather than detract from, its fine ratshit flavour. Thank goodness for crash bungs.
The Jandal giveth, and the Jandal taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Jandal.

Did you try hanging off and kicking the ground and jumping back on the bike again? It always works in my dreams.
Don't know what the medical lunguge means, just hope it's not your writing, main hand and get well soon and all that crap.
How's Mr.Skid doing?

Did you try hanging off and kicking the ground and jumping back on the bike again?
No. I did manage to clearly say "ahhhh, fuck" into my helmet as the bike came round and spat me off. I'm not sure that kicking the ground at any point would have done much, other than relieve my frustrations.
I probably would have been all right if I'd stayed on the throttle. Just one of those classic n00b highsides. We live and learn...

I hope you tried to look cool as you sailed through the air, the general " oh I meant to do that!" look should of been used on graciously jumping up whilst still sliding in to a slow run.

Admit it. This has all been an elaborate ruse so you can finally have that nose job and nip n' tuck you've been pining for all these years... 'there was a mix up, honest there was...'
Heal up fast, and don't go for the full 'Jackson', will you? *shudder*

Ya don't need surgery you big wuss!
Just head down to that hippy commune I was telling you about, they'll get the comfrey tea and sage smudges out for you - she'll be right.
Don't forget the healing crystals waved by the nubile nymphettes.
Mmmmm, organic carrots . . . .

Heal quick, young'un.

But with a few fine days coming up and you not being able to ride...... you didn't plan that too well now did you... hmmmmmm.

Welcome to big bike ownership mate.
LMAO - ain't that the truth!
Good luck with surgery Dan. Bit of a bastard huh? Where's the bike? If it's still out that way you want me to collect/transport/shed it for you?
Time for a sing along to the big Suzuki song ...
Dan rides warily down the street,
But it feels just way too slow
A brand new bike that's sounding sweet,
His S-RAD's raring to go,
He's ready, hey, yeah he's ready for this,
He's hanging off the edge of his seat
Turning the corner - gives the throttle a blip,
And heads face first onto the street....
... yeaaahhh..
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, Im gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

Yes doesn't it. Sparky Bills has just posted today about how weak and useless his arm/shoulder are. I feel for him, Frosty and jrandom. I'm also getting very bored with not being fully right after a simple 'falling off'. Went to physio yesterday where she wanted to test the strength of my hands since both got damaged.
Left = 58kg ... Right = 16kg @! ( my brake hand it is too)
OMG how long is all this fixing going to take .... grrrrr
Good luck with the surgery jrandom ... and do the physio exercises as often as they tell you to

Obviously I can't let you ride it now, can I?

And what is a broken thumb any way? Bet you don't need to use it for anything that can't be done for you.

Bugger. Isn't a compound frature when the bone breaks through the skin? So how would you have suspected just a dislocation?
Compound meaning the bone is exposed to air and all.

Don't beat yersel' up over what shoulda coulda woulda been - it's too easy done in this weather. I got badly out of shape at the junction of Reeves Rd and Ti Rakau day before yesterday going to work - slid right, slid left, slid right again and then normal traction was resumed. I was lucky to ride it out. Combination of shitter cars dumping their oil on the road and a fine spray of rain.
Hope you heal soon.

Bugger. Isn't a compound frature when the bone breaks through the skin?
You're quite right. Bone wasn't through the skin, just shattered into a whole bunch of pieces that ended up all over the show inside my thumb. I was a bit whacked out last night, so I could well have used the wrong word in my post. I shall check my referral documentation in due course.
I suspected dislocation because of the obvious displacement and the fact that I could still violently wiggle it around. Amazing what adrenaline can do for you, eh?

I highsided turning left from the end of it onto SH16, it was 16 I kissed, not Brigham's Creek Rd. Went into the corner at slow to moderate pace and then got on the gas too hard as I straightened up.
