View Full Version : Sellers' tricks...Tips for buyers

I thought it might be an idea to start a thread to help new buyers with tips on things to look for, or look out for when looking to buy a new bike.

I'll start the ball rolling with this pic of a speedo that has been "adjusted"...the pic is from an imported bike currently for sale on Tardeme...... and dont think that digital speedo's are tamper proof either, they can be modified in bikes & cars as well, though it is harder to do and spot.

Misaligned odometer numbers, DO NOT mean a speedo has definately been fucked with.

Bikes particularly bounce and vibrate a lot, and they are only gear driven.

Get educated yourself, before you start potentially costing others money!!!

This was the toung bitten reply, I get exceptionally pissed off with this sort of stupid statement.

So, dude, as you were saying earlier... only 26951km on the clock, and you had it serviced regularly?

I was worried for a bit, there, but you've set my mind at rest. I'll pop round with the cash later on.

Hi

I have pulled quite a few dashes out of Jap import cars that were tampered with.
A lot had numbers that were misalighned because the Japs often damaged
the speedo internally when they levered the shaft out.
They also used to paint the first number black if it was over a hunderd thou.
I guess bikes could be done - at least the ones without crimped lids.

I bit of useless info:
Some Honda cars had screws you had to remove to get the speedo that went through the fuel/temp gauge windings - the "imported fault" was the giveaway!

Cheers
Jason

Hmmmm, I seem to have hit a nerve, I take it you have something to do with selling imports???
Quite right!, misaligned numbers alone do not suggest a modded speedo, but add that to a bike with only 26k on the clock and the scratched facia screws and theres a 95% change it has been "adjusted".
So May I suggest that YOU get fuggin educated!!!

I can't see any "scratched fascia screws". Is that because I'm old and blind?

I ignore Km anyway. Condition is king.

I suspect it all boils down to the fact that you don't ride shitters. Second hand bikes allways has a risk involved. Rather than putting too much emphasis on the odometer, I would suggest a good going over the running gear of the bike. Checking for wear and non original parts can also suggest that the use the bike has had might not match the number on the odo. However a new bike enthuiast might not be able to pick up on this. Best advice is to take someone who knows a fair bit about bikes with you. This does not include your best mate because he thinks he in a knowitall. I used to take the old buggers with me when I was a young fella as I could not remember them not having a bike and I'd seen alot of the work they had done to bikes. Having someone who is handy at restoring and/or rebuilding bikes is a go. Otherwise just buy new, might be cheaper in the long run... :gob:

Heathen--Have you ever looked inside a bike speedo??

heathen
2nd August 2007, 19:41
Hi Frosty, I have over the years had a look into both analogue and digital speedo's, though mainly in terms of e2prom and PIC reprogramming.
If it can be manufactured it can be disassembled and it's surprising what some will do when moneys involved...
Anyhoooo, i thought a thread to help out new bike buyers might be helpful, so any one got a tip or two instead of questioning my qualifications??..

I dont question your qualifications, it's the generalisation that pisses me off ya tool!!!

A mate of mine was recently selling the mintest GSXR1100 I've ever seen, and it was bought up that the speedo wasn't perfectly in line. I would stake my life that the k's are real, and yet you imply it should be stayed away from.

Here's a friggin tip for ya, kill yourself, the rest of us will have more air, more space to move, and less of a que at the supermarket.

Well, um......I have owned such antiquated machinery from brand new off the shop floor.....and yes the dials were all wonky just like the pic you show.....after a few thousand brand new km's of course! so I guess that means my brand new pride and joys of the time wern't actually brand new at all! arrrrgggghhhhhhh ripped off huh!;)

The first one I did wind back I phucked up too. It ended up all wonky so I had to go to a wrecker and get another one, but I was lucky, the one I found had 48,000K's less on it, so it all worked out well. ;-)

Now I am more careful and put my white gloves on too.

Remember a mate many years ago who connected a drill on to the speedo cable and run it in reverse for a day..lol.

Doesn't always work. Best way is to gear the drill bit to the speedo cable so that 1 rev on drill = 10 revs on cable then run it FORWARD past zero and on to the approximate desired mileage. Lines the numbers up nicer too.

Hey Drew. As requested.

IMO, your last sentence of this post goes too far. I don't see how it is shit-slinging with ya mates. That was my only point.

Might have been over the top, but dont take anything I say too seriously. If I'd said it in person, It would have been clear it was a joke from the stupid lookin grin on my face.

That bike is about to roll over to 30000kms. Vehicles I've owned from new have all done what is shown in the picture just before rolling over the next 10000km lot of numbers. Some of them do it in increments of 100kms. Depends on whether or not the analogue Odo has plastic or metal gears I would suggest, as to how precisely the numbers line up. Or whether it was made by Honda or Suzuki suppliers. Honda has much more exacting tolerances than some of the other manufacturers.

I think that was probably a bad example to use Heathen.

while that would work the "more fun" way is simply to ride it till the odo goes right round the clock to the desired milage.
Tried doing that to the chicks bike I aquired but the damn thing put a 1 in the front of all the zeros so now I have another 900,000km to go till new. Nearly there.

not cause the numbers dont line up ,ive had cars and bikes like that

I remember this one time, at band camp.......

Years ago I was working for a guy who had a NZ new laser or lancer or something like that and he was doing a shitload of ks in it so removed the speedo so he didnt run up the ks. When he came to sell it and was looking at buying a new car I suggested he look at jap imports. He said he didnt want a jap import because you cant guarentee the ks! He couldnt explain how he could guarentee the ks on his NZ new car he had been driving round the country for 3 years without a speedo......

My dad rigged up the odo on his ute so that the thousand figures didn't click over, only the ones and tens to avoid road tax (that way it couldn't be easily identified by a copper). I think the offical line was going to be "oh this thing just sits in the garage, only ever gets driven to get a warrant".
