View Full Version : The Great KB Spend-A-Thon: August 07
Winter
4th August 2007, 14:20
Allright everyone:
The Great KB Spend-A-Thon
The idea of this thread is to gauge how much the KB community is worth to the New Zealand motorcycle industry.
So, everytime you purchase some kit, pay for services from a shop (excluding fuel) come and post the amount here.
Let us know what it was for, if you like, and the total.
I'll try keep track of it all and provide totals every few days, and at the end of the month we can see the big dollar!
We can backdate this one to the start of August, and it will close on the last day of the month.

What effect would it have on the industry if KB didn't exist? - virtually nothing. That's about how much it's worth to the industry.
As a communications and referral tool it has merit. But all that's doing is robbing peter to pay paul as far as overall industry effect is concerned.
As a large group of purchasers of motorcycling products, Kiwibiker members could have a substantial impact on providers of substandard goods and bad service by spreading the word on who has provided a substandard product/service leading to certain stores being boycotted.
Kiwibiker, by providing information on which retailers/mechanics etc. provide excellent service could also cause an increase in business for those who are providing the best products/services at the best prices.
This eventually could have a long term positive effect on the quality of both goods and services that all bikers receive, and the larger the membership (and therefore the larger the buying power) of kiwibiker gets, the faster the effects will be seen. Word of mouth has always been effective, but with internet forums focusing on a small industry (ie motorcycling in NZ), the effects can be magnified hugely.

PCII.
Secondhand.
And I had one lined up for a lot less, but the wanker reneged on the deal.
Then I found another one, but the eejit stuffed up the postage (supposed to be US $10, but because he was a moron, it ended up as US$127.43).
And then there was a brand new one (new old stock) but it sold for US$176.
The cheapest PCIII's I've found were ~US$290 for a VFR, which is still ~NZ$370. Possible divorce material?

Yes, indeedy.
Not as cheap as my friend Alan's one (bought new at a close-out sale for way less than $100), but at least it works.
Now...
When I first fitted it, it didn't go (bike conked out) and I was less than happy.
But this morning - after some fiddling + plugging/unplugging - it came right (dirty pins?) and the bike runs very nicely indeed.
I arrived at work with a smile on my face this morning, which is a very rare occurrence... :sunny:

Shit, thats some dollars from only a few KB'ers, in a month this would be only the tip of the iceberg of expenditure into the motorcyce industry of New Zealand.
Think of the likes of other organisations ie; Ulysses club NZ wide, Harley Owners Groups, these groups are big spenders, and all the other groups and clubs out there, Moto X, ATV, Racing scene etc so it goes on. Would run into Millions i'd expect.

The spreadsheet contains only each dollar amount, so I can tell you the most expensive item was $10,500, but thats about it.
If anyone thinks its a good idea, I can throw together a little database / web app gizmo, everytime you buy something you can come and put the amount and what it was for. That way we can track a whole lot of stuff, such as "over six months, people spend the most money on a tuesday"
