For some time I've been checking out some great roads around Fordell, Hunterville, Papanui Junction way. They are sealed, very windy, very scenic, and just look FAB.

We could make a day of it and try them out. If you're keen just post up and I'll work on a route and try it out on Saturday.

OK! I think a ride like this will be quite a long one. So an 8.30 departure from Ashhurst sounds good! I'll do all the route planning at work (hi speed net) and get up an idea of distance/time asap!

 of course it is...chuck some knobblies on and we'll be sweet!!

maybe not....

bloody google maps road layout is all up the shitter anyway, its only good for main roads really

our usual route to SH1 will be just dandy then we'll see where Al takes us - but if we end up in Ohakune and come down SH4 i'll be grinning, never ridden it but i've driven it and its a damn fine bit o' road

Hope you can make it Lance. I think you'll enjoy the roads. I hadn't really considered Raetihi or Ohakune (might best be left for daylight saving) but basically a big loop from here to Fordell (just south east of Wangas via some cool back roads) back around to Hunterville (via more cool roads) then home. Quick estimate 5 - 6 hrs on the road including breaks

Would love to join you, unfortunately will be busy Saturday.

The Fordell / Hunterville loop is a great ride but can be very greasy this time of year, with the odd bit of loose gravel thrown in.

Take care

Thanks for the heads up ali, much appreciated. Shame you can't make it. They look like great roads alright, lot's of valleys, so we'll be careful

And easy to miss some of the turns - in the dark, on the Grand Challenge. Picture 10-12 bikes thundering down the road and all of a sudden hitting a gravel road in the dark...

Great fun.

Sorry, will miss this weekend's ride - I quite like that ride through to Hunterville.

OK folks, what do you think of this?

Leave Ashhurst 8.30 - 9.00 ish depending on Betsy's state of health, head out to Cheltenham (meet you there Barry?) via Colyton. Up to McKay Rd, down into Makino Rd, through Stanway to Pryces Line.

Down to Halcombe/Kakariki Rd to SH 1. Up to Marton (quick stop for English?), then north to the Marton Resevior via Tutaenui Rd, turn left into Makuhou Rd (this Rd looks really good) and down to Turakina Valley Rd and Turakina. Quick fag and coffee stop before heading up SH 3 to Warrengate Rd and Fordell.

North East along Kauangaroa (this looks like the really good bit) being careful not to end up in Mangamahu

Along Mangahoe Rd onto Ongo Rd (I know for a fact this is a good one too) and into Hunterville. Another rest stop then up SH 1 onto Vinegar Hill and home.

now this is just a thought...there's a bit of a loop i been thinking of doing since i went through the middle road - it basically starts in waipawa and heads up to havelock one way and comes back another - good looking roads

see map here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=waipawa&daddr=High+St+%40-39.937700,+176.593110+to:Pourerere+Rd+%40-39.958880,+176.680240+to:River+Rd+%40-39.911770,+176.725160+to:Middle+Rd+%40-39.789750,+176.777560+to:Middle+Rd+%40-39.670260,+176.877060+to:Te+Mata+Rd+%40-39.671110,+176.921150+to:Waimarama+Rd+%40-39.719080,+176.928890+to:Kahuranaki+Rd+%40-39.762860,+176.854540+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.916650,+176.815440+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.897410,+176.752160+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.911690,+176.725730+to:-39.943436,176.587758&mrcr=11&mrsp=12&sz=15&mra=mi&sll=-39.936856,176.602221&sspn=0.023856,0.039911&ie=UTF8&ll=-39.829104,176.780319&spn=0.382305,0.63858&z=11&om=1)

but im thinking (and this is only a suggestion, im quite happy to go with the flow on this one), the sun looks like it might actually be out and we might get some dry roads for a change over on the east side this weekend, where this side is looking pretty average so maybe we do an eastern run this week and the western next?

feel free to shoot me down mercilessly of course....

edit: we still need to figure out a route to get to and from waipawa of course but i have a bit of a plan.....

Google nearly got it, except it missed Vinegar Hill. I love those time/distance calculations, are they for pushbikes?

now this is just a thought...there's a bit of a loop i been thinking of doing since i went through the middle road - it basically starts in waipawa and heads up to havelock one way and comes back another - good looking roads

see map here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=waipawa&daddr=High+St+%40-39.937700,+176.593110+to:Pourerere+Rd+%40-39.958880,+176.680240+to:River+Rd+%40-39.911770,+176.725160+to:Middle+Rd+%40-39.789750,+176.777560+to:Middle+Rd+%40-39.670260,+176.877060+to:Te+Mata+Rd+%40-39.671110,+176.921150+to:Waimarama+Rd+%40-39.719080,+176.928890+to:Kahuranaki+Rd+%40-39.762860,+176.854540+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.916650,+176.815440+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.897410,+176.752160+to:Elsthorpe+Rd+%40-39.911690,+176.725730+to:-39.943436,176.587758&mrcr=11&mrsp=12&sz=15&mra=mi&sll=-39.936856,176.602221&sspn=0.023856,0.039911&ie=UTF8&ll=-39.829104,176.780319&spn=0.382305,0.63858&z=11&om=1)

but im thinking (and this is only a suggestion, im quite happy to go with the flow on this one), the sun looks like it might actually be out and we might get some dry roads for a change over on the east side this weekend, where this side is looking pretty average so maybe we do an eastern run this week and the western next?

feel free to shoot me down mercilessly of course....

edit: we still need to figure out a route to get to and from waipawa of course but i have a bit of a plan.....

I'd rather do a dry run, and that middle road sounds like a good one. I'm out for next weekend tho, working. Let's see what the forecast is like closer to Saturday and take a quick consensus.

be aware tho - the farmers have been grazing down the sides of the roads with the lack of rain in the last few months so there was a fair bit of cow crap on the roads....99% of it was dry, very little 'fresh' stuff when i went through 2 weeks ago and hopefully its cleaned up a bit by now tho but as usual on the back roads, eyes peeled....

Just done the loop from Palmy, Fordell, Hunterville, and Vinegar Hill today. Roads are in surprisingly good condition considering the weather we have been having. A few wet slippery bits but only the usual rubbish you would expect to find on back roads. No major surprises. But always pays to be on the look out for stray animals on these back roads.

I'll check the forecasts in the morning and decide then. 140 km/hr gusts could be pretty dangerous but it won't be like that all the way. I'm 50/50 right now.

Here's the area forecasts for Sanson, Dannevagas and Mahia to 2.00 pm respectively. I've chucked in the Palmerston forecast as well.

Not good this side, but surprisingly pleasant out east. It'll be wet here later this arvo and Wellie will get a hiding, but that's normal

Here's the area forecasts for Sanson, Dannevagas and Mahia to 2.00 pm respectively.

Not good this side, but surprisingly pleasant out east. It'll be wet here later this arvo and Wellie will get a hiding, but that's normal

We should only get strong wind on departure and return and even then, not overly strong.

Probably the same route NZSarge is familiar with

Well after waking this morning to really high winds in Shannon I thought no way was I brave enough to contemplate this today ..

Al advised not as windy in Palmerston, but still had to get from Shannon to Ashhurst so plan was hatched, drive to Palmerston & pick up a gixxer :blip:.. hmmm well it did not take much to convince me that was a great idea

Yod turned up just as Al was about to jump started the old warhorse, & off we set to Ashhurst to see who might be there .. Bonez & Garry H were waiting & Dogs was having a natter looking a bit worse for wear so not joining us .. since we gave Cowboyz the toot toot when we went past he shot down in the cage to have a natter as well, Garry was only riding part way with us, charging battery time…

Al was right the wind north was not as strong as Shannon with a wee bit of a constant lean it did not take much to get used to riding on a slant .. so off through the gorge & heading to Dannivegas to met NZ sarge .. but guess in the right royal tradition & since I was running a wee bit late … Sarge decided to ride towards us.. now the funny bit .. sarge passed me & bonez sat behind Al & Yod .. with Garry dropping off Al seen 5 bikes so did not realise that Sarge had joined the group

Hence sarge called in to gas up at Dannevegas again, but Al not seeing any bikes headed up the road ..Bonez & I waited & said our hello’s .. did not have to wait long til they joined us again ..

Off to Norsewood but heading back way through ormondsville .. was really getting into the groove with the gixxer, after the ride last weekend the corners are really starting to flow .. I pick my gear & just roll on & off throttle smooth nice lines .. ahhh the feeling

After perusing the norsewear shop back tracked, to ormondsville then headed towards taukapu plains .. was having way to much fun on this bike .. just in that groove quick stop at waipuk where Yod being the gentleman he is assisted a couple of older ladies with lifting a wheelchair into their car .. good on ya mate :2thumbsup

Off to waipawa & patangata pub for lunch break .. damn nice burgers too .. weather was still quite warm :niceone: after lunch it was tackling middle road .. took a few ks to get back into the groove  & off to Havelock North where Mr & Mrs Bonez Snr made us feel welcome with a hot cuppa .. gas up & then threading our way back home Not sure of the route we took but it was great .. although the wind caught ya out a few times

Only one brief shower of rain just out of waipukaru & we seemed to skirt the outside of it .. but had some interesting moments with slippery roads back towards ormondsville … quick stop, pic time & heading home time

Quite uneventful to dannevegas after bidding sarge farewell heading out & OMG the wind Thank you bonez for staying with me gawd I am sure I crapped myself several times & just about got blown off the road a couple of times I know my heart was in my mouth & am sure a few fark me’s came out as well .. thank goodness the wind eased by the time we got to the gorge

said cya to bonez & shortly after Yod as Al & I went the back way from Ashhurst to Palmy.. we did contemplate calling into cowboyz but was feeling pretty damn shattered .. so carried on back to palmy .. Cafe Cuba was calling us with latte, hot choccy & mud cake which was pretty much the icing on the day ..

Yes chanceyy did it again .. checked petrol gauge thought ok there is enough but umm no forgot unlike Betsy the gixxer has a reserve tank  yes she stalled & had no gas to get started again .. ohh this is only at a set of lights along Rangatiki line .. but quicky sorted once Al came & put reserve on for me :innocent:...

I am still damn well buzzing about the day .. dunno that I like being slammed by the wind like that .. :nono: but rain pretty much held off til we to cafe cuba & I am damn glad I was not riding bike back to shannon cause its fair pouring down here .. along with thunder & lightening ..

to have the most of the corners flow & to know how it feels the satisfaction of "getting it" .. well I guess quite a few riders know how that feels

Another great day! After a hesitant start we finally got it together and started the ride from my place funnily enough. Good thinking Jonno

Luckily we then decided to check the Ashhurst Mobil just in case, which was fortunate as we'd have missed Bonez and Garry H.

Both Cowboyz and Dogs were a tad exhausted due to hard weeks and declined to come so the hard men (and woman) headed east to Dannevegas losing Garry H but uplifting NZsarge along the way.

It was then straight onto the road to Ormondville. First time for me on this road and I got a rapid intro to it's first major corner as I'm happily following Sarge when suddenly his leg goes down and it's hard into this incredible left hand sweeper. Ahhh, the beauty of the backroads

Into Norsewood for a spot of shopping for Yod's Dad and then back onto the Ormondville road to Waipuk and Patangata for lunch - nice stop.

Then another first for me, Middle Road - marvelous

A refreshing stop at Bonez's folks for coffee (thanks ) then back down the back line to Wiapuk and this incredible route back to Ormondville. Raining by now and the wind is starting to make it's presence felt so a stop in Ormondville for a breather. This place is great. Very peaceful and straight out of an early settlers scene - nice.

Down to Danne's and say goodbye to Sarge, then south. Chanceyy has a few 'moments' with the wind but survives admirably  Through the Gorge, latte and hot Choccy and home. Starts raining. But, we're dry, timing couldn't have been better

Thanks all for another excellent day :niceone:

good to hear. I got a fair bit done I wanted to get done and dogs called in this arvo to show off his bike cam. Very very nice. 640x480@30. Surprisinggly high speced for the size of it.

 its darn great .. actually it might come in high demand as its sure interesting getting another perspective of lines etc .. :niceone: Dogs the stuff from today sure looked great :D

If I can make a suggestion, when we have more favorable weather maybe a ride Fielding, Desert road, Taupo, Napier and home. Always enjoyable.

hmm after yesterdays ride I would be up for this, it really boosts confidence to have a few successful excellent rides  & still more firsts .. but if its blowing a gale I might bail

Great pics!!!!

thanks hon & for the texts making sure we were back in palmy safe & sound .. just sure glad I did not have to ride home in that weather :nono: methinks I would not have gotten far ..

I met a really interesting guy in the whitsundays who is into dirt road exploring etc and is doing the Paris Dachau race in a couple of years. Good contact if anybody going to qld or elsewhere in Auz and wants advice on getting off the beaten track, with or without the family.

At last the Honda is with the exporter, crated and leaving on Friday.

Less of the old, just because you have a flighty young thing !!!! Just remember it has only done about 6K, lots of mileage left in it. Brother has knicknamed it Skippy already so don't think it will be too much of a slug.

I am keen to let 86, and any other volunteers, put it through it's paces for me so I know what to plan for:yes: And if I am going to be able to keep the back wheel on the floor around corners :ride:!!!!

Guys, guys, guys, you're sounding like them Ponsnobby people, with all this talk about coffee and cake,c'mon be human, people in the nice area of Palmyville shouldn't act like that, enjoy the fine city you have too, every time down there the bloody cafe cuba is busy, even weekdays damn.

Seriously though why not come up to Sth Taranaki for a weekend, couple of nice watering holes(with wine selection),good country roads, motels are cheap and the pubs have good beds, mountain even has snow on it,hadn't seen it for a while lol, thought it was sold and taken.Only 3 cops on main road from Hawera to Stratford going to work this morning, also have new stove so any budding female cooks can use it to make cake, mind you kitchen ,women place in home, ouch shit just got whacked over head by she who must be obeyed, damn.
