View Full Version : Fine cracks in side of motor

I was taking a look over my Hyosung GT250r today after a decent run (120kmish), and I noticed something I don't remember seeing before and it has me worried.

There are many fine "cracks" on the side of the motor, particilarly where the mould "curves around" (e.g, on a right angle). Some are relatively wide/deep - enough to get your fingernail in them, and some are just thin surface cracks.

Also, I pushed on the alloy near the cracks and it left a small "stretch indentation" (kind of like what happens when you stretch plastic out and it goes white and streaky). It's almost as if the motor is made of plastic. ;)

Now this motor has done all of 850km and it hasn't been overstressed because I have been trying to run it in easily.

Is this something I should be worried about? It doesn't look good but then I have no experience with these things...

I've attached a picture, and although it's not great quality, hopefully you can see what I'm getting at.

what did the shop you bought it from have to say about it?

Looks like cheap arse paint giving up the ghost.

It's almost due for it's first service so I'm taking it in Monday for that and I'll point the cracks out to them while I'm there. I just wanted to get some advice before I do in case it is bad and the shop try to pass it off as nothing.

I don't think so - the part isn't painted and the cracks are quite deep and solid. If it was paint I'd expect to be able to pick bits off easily enough and that isn't happening.

Yeah, but I'd be surprised if the crankcase was literally falling to bits in under a thousand kms :/

Dont let that happen mate, im no metal expert, but i would not let them pass it off as nothing, take it to another bike shop tommorrow and get a non biased opinion on it....i know the metal on the earlier models was crap and have seen how easy it snaps/cracks and breaks, any cracks on the engine casing tho' i would get it check out without doubt...

Mate get it checked but if your thumb can put a similar dent in it, it's got to be the paint.

Yeah I heard the 2005 model had it's fair share of metal problems, but they were apparently solved by the 2006 model. It could also be just a fault with manufacture or assembly causing the bike to run too hot. No temperature guage so I've no idea.

I'm stick in the Wairarapa this weekend so I might take it to a shop in Masterton tomorrow and see what they say about it.

I'd be surprised too! I hope it is just paint - that'd mean it's not going to blow up on me sometime soon... :shit: :)

Well I wasn't actually trying to dent it - I just happened to press down when I was looking and it kinda "sank" in. It felt like I could push it all the way through if I wanted to - not going to try it though! :shit: That could be unrelated to the cracks, but it's definitely soft metal which seems a similar problem to me.

Those cracks appear to be the heat shrink marks as the piece comes out of the Dia-cast mould.

I seriously doubt that you can leave a dent in it with your finger. go try make a hole, if you manage, it will definatly be under warrantee.

I agree, karmakillernz, push your finger as hard as you can on to the crank case where you show the finger mark and TRY to make a hole. If the casting of that engine is as soft as you think it is I doubt you would have ridden it 800kms or so without problems.

Still take it back to the dealer and get a please explain from them. Maybe there is someone locally that knows his/her shit that can look at it in the mean time for some reassurance!

Imbetting its a clear plastic coating on the cases.Again i'd be giving it the scrape test with my fingernail

I gotta agree with the others... try to make a hole... have a dig around with something soft and plastic like a cigarette lighter. Sure you might make a little mess of the paint if that's all it is, but that's a hell of a lot better than a crankcase going splut and dumping oil out the back!

Ahh that would make a lot of sense. I've never noticed it before, and it only seems to be in this one section which is why I was worried. I'm like a parent with a newborn - I fuss over every little thing. :innocent:

I tried to push on it this morning now that it's completely cold but it's solid as a rock. I did make a fairly noticeable impression when I first did it though at the time it was still warm to the touch. I'm sure it shouldn't be that soft when warm but as you say, it's lasted 800km so far so it's probably fine. :) I'll still point it out when I take it in for the service, and since it'll be warm then I'll get them to try it too.

But won't re-hash. Hows it going getting this sorted?

From what I can tell, it seems to be a common thing on every single Hyosung I looked at, including ones that have done a couple thousand kms, so I'm no longer worried about it.
