Hey all, I have had the monster now for a month and half. when the guys groomed the bike before delivery they used something oily to blacken the tyres however they didn't just do the sidewall, the did both tyres completely.

Now I can't leagally ride the bike for another month yet but know I need to clean this shit off before I get on it and get thrown off because of this slippery stuff.

Question is, because I have left it this long will there be permanant slippery stuff inbedded in my tyres or can I clean it off?

Next question, I know new tyres need scrubbing in but I would rather clean this stuff off ( if I can ) before trying to scrub them in in a months time..

How do I clean the tyres to ensure my first ride on the new bike isn't going to be like riding on ice???

i'd be taking it back to the dealer/groomer and asking them to either remove it completely, or replace the tyres.

depends totally on what the "stuff" is. if its the liquid nugget shoe polish stuff then soap and water and a scrubbing brush will shift it pretty easilly.
If they used a silicone based tyre shine then you need slightly more agressive tactics. .
To clean the stuff off of cage paintwork I use a product called prepsol which is basicly a weakened form of car paint thinners.
be careful with it and it wont effect the rubber.
But even so I'd still use dishwashing liquid in VERY hot water afterwards and scrub the tyre

Borrow the dealers bike trailer and take it out to a gravel road. (They caused your problem)

Five or ten Ks will see all the shit gone off your tyres! John.

ok... Cheers Marty, I might get in contact with them to find out exactly what was used. The bike was through Peter at Emoto and he is a decent bloke. I did ask him if the tyres were new and he stated his groomer my have been a little over zealous....

Frosty, I will try your methods but if I can't get it off them I will see if I can get replacment tyres from them..

Ive used this for various things and its really handy. You'll often come across it labeled as "Wax and Grease remover"

Warm engine, apply front brake select 1st gear, rev to 5000rpm let clutch out.Clutch in, select neutral, engine off.Wait for smoke to clear and inspect....My guess would be that its just silicon spray that will make the tyre pretty but do fuck all.The worst thing is it will play on your mind.A few figure 8s and it will be gone.Wash it and give it a light scuff with a wire brush or sand paper if you want.

Wipe the part of the tyre that will contact the road with Prepsol (as mentioned above) or paint thinners, that'll do it.:niceone:

Nugget worked for Burt it managed to hide the cracks in his rubber.

However, as for car type tyre foams and cleaners, yeah put them on bike tyres and the first corner you lean into you better be used to a dirt track type foot down slide because there is f'all grip.

As BD says though just ride carefully for a while and it will come right.

you know my situation mate... Still staying strong..

It is damn hard though, 1 more month and then I am on it....

If my driveway had some corners I'm sure I could srub them off after a few laps but it is bloody straight..

I guess if it's really bad I'd wash it first.

No matter what you do ride as if the stuff is still on your tyre. Treat as you would scrubbing in a new one just to be on the safe side.
