View Full Version : Is there enough room to allow google earth files to be uploaded?

Thinking it would be handy for planning and reporting rides. File sizes are <200k and would be good if they were allowed to be uploaded.
Thoughts?

I would've thought there would be no technical difficulty - it's not bigger than 3-4 biggish JPEG's after all.
It would be worth looking in to both my maps on google - http://maps.google.com/ - and it might be possible to set up groups on Zoomin (http://www.zoomin.co.nz/) to do the same job.

yeah, but if allowed KML files I can get the info striaght off the gps without remapping stuff on a new map. I would have thought that google maps would let you upload a kml file and map it out for you but apparently not.

A link yup... a reduced image yup... but not a full embedded image. A few people have done that in the past and have bombed people on 56K modems. Not fair.

not sure you got my point. My GPS program (as alot of other programs) can create a google earth file (KML) With lots and lots of points on it the files themselves are <200k
You have to have google earth installed and then you run the data file (KML) and it loads google earth and shows where you went/ are planning to go. There is no map as such to download.
If you allow KML files for a day I will give you a demo.

Sounds very cool. Have you mentioned it to Spank? (not sure the mods can change file upload restrictions)

I need a 36x36 and a 16x16 thumb image that represents the file type.

here is a 16x16 icon. is that what you want?
I renamed it to *.doc to upload. sorry for breaching rules slightly. rename to *.ico to use.

Rename attachment to *.KML and double click on it. It is a google earth file so obviously need google earth installed.
This is where I went last weekend striaght off my garmin etrex legend.

Worked like a charm. Just d/led your attachment and named as a .kml file. Double click and it launched Google Earth showing your trip.
Cool. Might have to get a GPS for the 'Wing

They are great and you dont have to pay the earth for them. I paid $220 for my etrex legend on trademe and it comes complete with detailed NZ maps. The maps are a bit of a pain to use cause the screen is so small but I only use the gps for recording purposes really.

fyi: the kml files are just xml....
cowboyz

that be true but if you name it *.xml you will have to fuck around with file associates to get it to load google earth.
