I am planning a ride from Ashurst to Ashurst going through the following places
Taihape-Turangi-Taupo-Rotorua-Opokiti-Gisborne-Napier
Will be spending the night of the 10th in Gisborne with a BBQ dinner and will be spending as much time of the state highways as possible between the main centres so all country road hazzards will exist
the ride is open too all that are interested..........you can do the whole ride or just part of the ride whichever suits your lifestyle
meeting points along the way will be mainly major intersections and fuel stops with lunch on the 10th being in Rotorua and lunch on the 11th being in Napier
I will be posting the entire route with distance's and times of ETA's within the next few weeks
For any out of towners wishing to do the complete circuit I am sure we can find a bed or couch for you with local Kber's
As for Accomadation in Gisborne it will be wise to bring a sleeping bag
let me know if your keen to join in and if you will require accomadation either in Palmy on the friday night or Gisborne on the saturday night
register your attendance here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&ea=attend&e=1382)

Im in. I would be interested in east cape though. I think there would be enough time. If not east cape then something like the map below could be a go taking in western access at taupo and then round the lakes at rotorua.

Now that's more like it! Be a great day out. Gotta mate that would probably be keen too - luv those roads. Waioeka Gorge rocks. East Cape kicks butt too.
Anyone ever done that inland route from Wairoa to Gisborne? She's a real wild one - stock everywhere (generally some of everthing - think the ark ran aground there) and crap all over the road. Windy as hell too.
There's no shortage of decent rides eh?

you need google earth.
Have you seen quikmaps? You can draw on the maps and you don't need google earth (better for people with crap computers), or KMZ files, it's all browser based. http://www.quikmaps.com/new Something to play around with for the future maybe.
cowboyz
6th September 2007, 07:06
yep, seen quikmaps and doesnt offer the detail the my mapping program does. I actually use trackmaker which is real easy to map out routes and shows every road/town name. It exports directly to google earth so takes about 0.00002 of a second to create a google earth file. Which is handy for me. Especially if I have ridden the road before cause then I can import the track directly off the gps and dont have to map it at all.
Feel free if anyone wants to remap the google earth file to quikmaps/google maps/ smaps or anything else.

Well as now the links are sorted
this is becoming a ride of all sorts have comformation that some of the freedom riders and union jack social club from Gisborne will be meeting us in Opokiti and I know of one kber from gisborne who will also be there
So when I have the final numbers I will be looking at splitting the group into groups 0f 5 or 6 riders per group for some of the sections to accomadate rider ability and for the saftey of all
So a simple idea is taking place of bringing fellow motorcyclist together on a weekend where old school bikes are mingling with late model sports bikes its not a competition but a chance to enjoy the freedom of our way of life
cowboyz
16th September 2007, 10:49
Honestly, I wouldnt worry about splitting the group into smaller groups. These things have a way of working themselves out, especially over distance. Let the natural order of things dictate the order of the ride. Over organising will slow the ride down and make for more stops.

just doing a bit of a work out on recent rides. Now we are getting a little nortorious for the frequent stops on the rides and while averaging close to 100km.hr on the move our averages for total time are ranging from 55km to 61km.
Day one ride on this trip has been mapped at 785k. My mapping program does not have auto routing so can be about 10% out so worst case is day one could be up to 863km.
At an average speed of 55-61km.hr that makes a ride time of 14.1 -15.5 hours for day one.
Considering that we intend to leave at 6.30am that makes our arrival at gisborne between 830pm and 10pm.
So one of two things.
1. raise the overall average times by limiting stops to every couple of hundred kms. This means that the group WILL break up on the trip and each rider will be responible for knowing where and how to get to the next checkpoint. I dont think that we can raise the average speed by simply riding faster.
2. shorten the route.
Thoughts.
dogsnbikes
24th September 2007, 20:22
less smoke breaks:bleh:
Dont stress yet I have it all sorted as you can see on the maps there are loops all those loops are optional extras and in short if time permits
am allowing 5.5 hours to Rotorua so if we aren't there by 12 the afternoon section will be shortened
Oh lunch is 30minutes only in rotorua :devil2:
cowboyz
24th September 2007, 20:28
ok. I am fine with less smoke breaks. Seriously. Just looking at the route and times required. Will will have to average 87km.hr to make the 5.5 hours to Rotorua. That is fine and should be do-able.
I am just sitting here wondering if those contemplating this trip are aware of the time restraints on it.

just wondered to make the rides flow .. second rider behind leader drops off til TEC comes through .. it made the ride I organised flow .. that way your not stopping at each corner waiting for everyone & you can get a good distance going without all the stops .. if ya desperate for a smoke just make sure your the second rider alot .. ..

That system works well as long as the rider who stops and waits doesnt take their helmet off. Its downside (especially as the distance gets on) is that the slower (read, less experienced riders) don't get a break as they are always waved through.
I am going to be back up in the naki in a couple of weeks and I might make up a practice ride where minimum distance to stops will be 200km. just to see what difference it makes to the average.
86GSXR
24th September 2007, 21:13
800 + kms is a long ride alright, and that's 8 hrs non stop riding. It's important to take rest breaks, especially towards the end as fatigue sets in.
I think the best way to manage this is a combination of the above suggestions, ie, 2nd rider waits for TEC, take organised breaks every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs, and as Barry has planned, take out a couple of the afternoon loops.
We don't want to arrive completely fucked and we do want a bit of time to wind down and enjoy the days riding with a couple of cold ones when we get there.

Should be easy time wise for you,say stop in Straford, should be around 200 km from Ashurst/Palmy,then onto Waitara back to Waverley for stop around 170km,then home, maybe take 30 mins for rest breaks.About 550km return trip.

no offence buddy but we dont seem to be able to get in and out of taranaki for under 650km. There are just too many good roads up there that need to be ridden. This return trip to taranaki will be a good appertiser for dogs ride. My point being that the pace last weekend simply isnt going to cut it.
And I am not poking the finger really. Just trying to put a dose of reality into the "dream". Meanie, Mouse and I did 2700km in a weekend over the 4 points ride and we did not exceed 140km.hr. It is more than possible but even then there were unscheduled stops due to the weather and fatigue where we just could not continue. I dont want to portray a "I must carry on even though I feel like I am going to fall off on every corner and I can barely stay awake" mentality as safety should be first and if rest is required then it should be paramount over the ride. There is a huge difference between 3 riders out and about and 15 riders out and about. I think we shouldnt have a problem looking out for each other but the realiity of it will be over 200km the difference between the first rider arriving and TEC could be 30 minutes. Another issue that needs to be addressed is that the ones who have been waiting at a stop for 15-20mins dont jump striaght back on the bikes and have the end riders getting 5 minute break before starting out again. There are plenty of challenges to long distance riding and just like people to know that the rose has thorns before picking them.

hmm it might be less than 500 ks but for us newbies not used to all that riding .. it will be tiring .. thinking I might need a sheepskin for the bike on this trip though .. seat gets very uncomfy after a few hours riding
& stop showing off ya bugger .. I might have to call in sick on the monday to recover
you could spend less time yaking and more time riding :girlfight:

I think the distance is acheivable but we cant stop every 30mins
What about designated stops ie fuel stations approx 200kms apart where we wait for the last rider and leave ten or fifteen mins after he or she arrives thus giving all a break
Even on the week end the slow riders were only five to ten mins behind
Another option could be a short cut across the loops for anyone feeling a little fatiuged, again with a designated fuel stop to reassemble
Everyone needs to have a map and a list of reassemble points
Everyone should have Dogs mobile no to inform him of any problems or delays so a decision at the fuelstop can be made to continue or wait, Comunication will be vital
Thoughts ?

Yep, this will be a hard core ride, and it will be dictated by the slower riders to an extent. It's important for everyone to be aware of the rigours of the day and not to go beyond their limits. I'd say that everyone who is leaving from Ashhurst will be up to it and if it comes to the crunch, we'll just have to accept that and ammend the legs to compensate. Easy really if we're all on the same page.

I agree. Gas stations would be the easiest and most logical places to stop. If they're 200 kms apart Chanceyy should perhaps take along a small supply of fuel just in case.

once we have numbers I will compile a list of cellie numbers for everyone attending & organising a list for the group so everyone has it ..
also this is supose to be a cruisy kinda ride so should not be massive wait times between the first rider & last, unless the group out front is gonna ride at warp speed ..

Might sound stupid, but when you get the list of riders finalised, you should get an idea of riders ability. That way you may get an idea of how quick you can travel, bearing in mind unfamiliar roads etc. When I got to you all at the servo saturday, nobody there at 9.50 ish, went and sussed a couple of jobs, came back at 10 ish and still one bike, wasn't sure if with you guys, came back in 10 minutes and most were there, another couple of minutes and all seemed there,so for that size group 20-30 minutes to fuel refresh seems like it will work for you all.If in the afternoon it is taking a while longer to get to destination then you could have a break, suggest a quicker route for slower riders and longer route for the quick ones,or take the more direct route for all,as they say that's plan B.
Agree with you about interesting roads here, unfortunately we really only have one way in and out so unless doing huge round trip seem to be out to say Awakino back through same route, which is ok.

Hi Guys, been reading through this thread a bit. Not sure if I'll make the ride but I see ya mutterings about organising the ride/stops/speed etc. After doing a few GC's and Southern X's I've thought a bit about what I reckon you need to do if going on a decent sized ride.
I'm working on something about it for my website but take a look at this doc http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfrbcnqz_15gjbrg3 if interested (work in progress). Of course a lot of this isn't rocket science and some of you've mentioned bits and pieces of it.
I don't pretend to know everything or want to tell you what to do but anyway...
One thing I thought is that maybe you need to split the group up a bit - the more people the more riding styles etc. Maybe the slower guys go together and start earlier? Maybe people with smaller tanks/poor economy go together - whatever. And yep it'll help if everyone knows the route.
So who's signing up for the 2008 GC? :2thumbsup

thanks for your input Bandit depending on the size of the final group will depend on splits happening but at this stage we will be staying together until we hit Opotiki where it looks like we will be joined by another 10 or 12 riders (non KBers)from Gisborne
otherwise it may get a little tight in the gorge and less experience riders dont need too see faster riders tailgating them and regrouping At Matiwai

It is excellent to have input from an experienced long distance rider. Plan as we may it will still be a huge learning curve on the day as I would class most of the riders on the day to be "cafe riders"
These are some of the points I was trying to address before we get out there and do it. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.
I am keen as to get into a GC. 2008 could be a go. Have to get myself organised properly and a little fitter for that kind of ride though.
PS. what happened to the mirror?

Well after many hours of messing around I finally have auto routing on my PC now so remapped the trip (it automatically follows the roads and give you real distances) I can confirm that day one is 827km and day two is 464km. This is not allowing for detours or getting lost.

Dang, I havent been around here for ages and look at what I missed out on...well the ZZR is still in bits so I wouldnt be much fun...could have been a support car though.
I also could have moved the Holden out of the shed and housed about 10 bikes...and could have delievered people back to their housing.
Im to slow...I think they will pass my house to!! Im on Ormond Rd, could some one tell me which way they are getting into Gisborne...I might have to put out a sign for them.

Just to add, if any one reads this and can contact the riders please tell them if any of them need housing for their bikes and a ride some where I can help. Ring or sextxt me on 021963176 and I hope Im around and can help. Im sure Rusty would have cleared out his HUGEEE shed so storage shouldnt have been a problem....however I thought I would offer.

they are sorted with a private address in the country just out of gisborne for the night. I got a txt from Meanie just after 1pm saying they were in Rotorua. I saw them this morning at about 6.15am in ashhurst with Dogs, Pheobe, Meanie, Mr & Mrs Yod, GarryH waiting for 86 and sarah. They seem to be making ok time and would probably expect them to be hitting Gisborne around 6pm

I thought it was a realative of dogs rather than a B&B. but yeah. They should be somewhere near there. No doubt they will fuel in Opotiki so if you run up there and found the most obvious Fuel station on the main road you might run into them. If you miss the 22' wide concours you defintely wont miss the bright yellow daytona X 2
