View Full Version : Temp problem, won't warm up.

I have a GSXR400 and when she runs I get no reading on the temp gauge, I don't recall the fan's going. Is it possible both sensors are stuffed out or most likely thermostat? Can you get thermostats repaired or are the cheap new? As I can not find a wreaked GSXR400 gk76a.
If anyone know's of hand thanks,

Almost certainly thermostat.
It won't be expensive new. Ring Richard at TSS Motorcycles (569 3989 Option 4) armed with your frame number (it will be stamped vertically on the headstock) and he should be able to sort it within a week or two at worst.
You've checked there's coolant in the system I hope?

have removed the coolant now looks pretty dark. Pulled the thermostat out looks ok and opens up when i put it in boiling water, could just be the coolant you think? if so i might just give that a go first(more time than cash at the mo).

Check the gauge by disconnecting the wire to the temp sensor. Turn on ignition. The temp should now be "cold". Short the wire you just disconnected to the frame and the temp gauge should go slowly up to "hot". This will show you that the temp gauge and wiring is working.
Normally fan sensor is after the radiator and when you ride the water is always coolest there. So very seldom does the fan kick in.
If you have low level of coolant/water in the system the temp sensor will not warm up as the water is what warms it up.
To test the temp sensor you measure it with a multimeter. When hot the resistanse is low, when cold high.

thanks man,
i have checked the temp gauge by doing as you said and works fine. i checked the censor by sticking it in hot water and running a wire to the frame. looks ok i think it will be hot at 90-100 degrees c, pretty rough guess tho as my temp gauge i was using as a ref died.
i could not trip the fans by the hot water so looks ok for the censors, but i am at a loss to explain it not heating up. How much water should be going trough the thermostat when it is cold as i can pour water trough it but not much, more when it is hot.
think i might just replace the thermostat and see how that go's thanks for the help.

When motor cold the thermostat should be closed. No water through. Idea here is to get motor up to working temp as soon as poss.

Suzis of that era had crazy thermostats in them, waay too cold esp for over here.
Do a search on this site for threads I started with RF900 & have a read about what thermo I used. Very likely the same.

Amongst all the other replys I think this got missed, most of the time coolant will not make your bike run colder just by being of x type vs y type, as others have pointed out your thermostat looks like a good starter ten.
In case you are thinking of just replacing the coolant with good old fashioned H2O dont (not that you were anyway) even in cars its a bad idea, (you knew all of that anyhow).
